If Hawkins stays, and depending on his buyout #, I think it is likely he will, there needs to be a shakeup with some of the assistants. To me the first change needs to be at DC. How many 20+ yard plays has the defense given up in the first two games? Missed assignments, players getting caught in mismatches, out of position, etc. the issues are glaring.

Did anyone find it suspicious that Collins was on the field Friday night instead of the coaches' box, where he has always been prior to this year? In the meantime, Hawkins hires Bob Foster "to coach outside linebackers", where you probably already have the strongest postion coach on the team in Cabral. Pure speculation, but is it possible Hawkins hired this guy to mentor his DC?

i've tried to tell myself Collins wasn't that bad and we've had some decent D performances (minus MU, and the Baylor TD in year 1 where we drop 9 on the goalline)....but the way we've been a sieve the opening halves of the first two games has been pretty lousy. CSU ran it down our throats and beat us on the deep ball with our guys 2 steps behind their guy (more than a couple time). Toledo roasted our db's.

Do you think this should happen now? Or depending on the Wyo game?

I really think before Wyo game so that a recovery attempt of the season may be made w/ a little higher chance of success. If that doesnt work, at the end of the season Hack needs to go to.

Our seemingly inability to actually tackle a guy is the biggest issue. The arm tackling I see on the field isn't being addressed. That's on the DC imo.

I think Bandison and Collins need to go if we get embarrassed in Folsom next week. Why give them another week? I'm not sure. I don't see this team rebounding this season. But I think we can give them 3 games to get their **** together. jmho.

Collins is going nowhere. Don't you people understand? Hawk and his staff think they're doing things right, hawk is not going to get rid of anyone. We are STUCK.

Unless things continue to deteriorate, I would wait until the end of the season. To rip the cord now would seem like a desperate move.

The fact that we are supposedly deep and talented at the corners makes the downfield successes of CSU and Toledo even more disconcerting. On a couple of those long plays Friday they caught us in a corner blitz. Bad defensive play calling, imo.

might as well keep them on because you aren't going to be able to make a hire until the end of the season. Letting them go now would leave us short-staffed.

So if we go 0-6? 0-5? This can easily happen if we lose to Wyoming.

:iagree: Before the season started, I thought maybe it would be streaky, like 3-0, 0-3, 4-0, 1-1. Now maybe the streak never ends. It would take this kind of calamity for any action this year (or next).

I think a change at DC would be a wise move. But the change also needs to involve a change in D philosophy. Change DC and not changing the way you attack the other teams isn't going to do us any good.

Rushing 3 on 3rd and long so the QB has 10 seconds to find an open receiver has NEVER worked, I don't care who is calling that coverage, it needs to be pulled from the play book.

I think we can all agree that Cabral would take over the DC spot?

I would like to see him get a shot at it, but I am guessing if there is a change Hawkins goes with the his mentor that he brought it to coach OLB's

I want Collins gone yesterday, but I think Brown would get the nod. I'm not sure I agree with that. However, I'd like the idea of that move including a promotion of Ambrose to DB coach.

Ron Collins has to go after this season. We see the spread on a constant basis, and for every Texas Tech game where the defense plays well there are several games like Friday where the spread leaves our guys totally confused and we get torched. To be fair, the spread is the offense du jour for a reason, and a lot of teams have trouble stopping it, but still. How can we look so out of position when we are playing an offense we see almost every week? That's all on the DC, in my opinion.

On the Bob Foster thing: Ron Collins coached outside linebackers last year, so Bob Foster was taking a responsibility from Ron Collins, not Brian Cabral. I'm not sure why Cabral wasn't coaching the outside linebackers to begin with, unless his recruiting responsibilities are so heavy that he needs to limit his coaching role. I doubt Bob Foster was hired to be the DC in disguise. But it wouldn't surprise me to see Greg Brown take over as DC, with Ashley Ambrose becoming "interim" defensive backs coach.

Its not on Greg Brown that Ron Collins runs corner blitzes with our man cover guys and leaves our inexperienced safeties exposed. Really, who do want left on an island, a freshman safety or Jimmy Smith?

I wouldn't mind seeing Cabral as the DC. Especially if our scheme got a lot more aggressive as a result. Recruiting top Defensive talent would be easier if we were running a less passive scheme. Running corner blitzes that everybody in the stadium can see coming isn't being aggressive, especially when the lineman are playing two gap and getting pushed around.

I had forgotten Collins coached outside lbs prior. Perhaps Foster was brought on to free up Collins to put together these defensive gameplans.

Collins is the flip side of the Helfrich hire. They are both bad. I knew they weren't the guys for the job when they were announced and I said so.
Even if you have decent position coaches it is the DC who puts together the schemes, game plans and calls the defense. The 3 and 2 man rush on obvious passing downs, unless it is the waning minutes of a game with a large lead, is a disaster waiting to happen. As you all have seen way too many times, it does happen a lot.

Having Collins around right now is secondary to the primary problem. The primary problem is Hawkins. Other than the endless BS that we see and hear from this guy, he has lost the team. When that happens, it's over. Next coach, please...

Does the DC also determine the practice schedule/drills for the defense or is that the head coach?

I ask this because we don't seem to be spending enough practice time on tackling or causing fumbles.

I hear what you are saying, but wouldn't this just set us back another two or so years...having to learn new philosophy and terminology?

I guess it should also be noted that we really can't attract top proven coordinator talent without long term contracts and aggressive salary's. We have to stick with the up and comers.

I don't know why people are up in arms about finding an assistant...We have Ambrose, he can step in and coach a position on D regardless of who gets promoted. Sykes is also in the program, no coaching experience, but again someone to hold the fort down the rest of the season for someone more capable of stepping up.
