What coaches are calling Hawkins and telling him that - come on - no one is calling. Bob Davie was on the sideline, a former coach, and he was expressing shock - I doubt he would advise Hawkins to keep doing what he is doing.

It's not different than when POWs are interviewed and made to give propaganda. They will find ways to send a message to help and save them and subtley send signals w/o letting their oppressors know exactly what their doing. Their crying for help but can't out right throw Talkins under the bus.
