Gators a 73-Point Favorite Over Charleston Southern*

*Updated: Was the 73 meant be a 63? Matt Hinton of Dr Saturday has the scoop. Wiz take: Even at 63, it would probably be the biggest pointspread in college football history, eclipsing the 59.5 points Hawaii spotted Northern Colorado in a 2007 season opener. Hawaii won, 63-6, and failed to cover.
It has come to this in college football. Danny Sheridan of USA Today has made Florida a 73-point favorite in its Sept. 5 opening game against Division I-AA Charleston Southern. It's believed to be the largest pointspread ever for a college football game.

I generally hate miami on principle, but I am rooting for them this year due to their schedule. That kind of scheduling is good for college football. Even if Miami loses one of their first 4 games, they should get more credit for the loss than Florida gets for a 60+ win against Charleston Southern.

:yeahthat: I am impressed by their scheduling this year, I wouldn't wish that on anyone. I also find myself strangely impressed by the change in team image. Miami no longer strikes me as Thug U. Randy Shannon seems to have done a good job on and off the field.

I hear they have quite a young team too... I guess youth is no longer an excuse for poor performance. :huh:
 
Shannon's done a hell of a job with the Canes - as far as team character goes, the stat that is thrown about often here is that there has only been 1 UM player arrested in the past couple of years, vs. around 24 or so players arrested for the Gators...

With regards to the youthful talent - it all has to do with how fertile the recruiting grounds are down here - if you look at UM's roster, my guestimate is that at least half the team comes from South Florida, so there is tons of talent within easy reach for UM coaches to pull from...

I guess I do not get why Miami gets praised for their scheduling. Yes, they have Oklahoma on their schedule, but they are not leaving the state of Florida for any of their non-conference games.

It has less to do with UM's non-conference scheduling than the way the ACC put together the conference schedule this year...combine those first 3 conference games with their non-conference opener vs. Oklahoma, and you've got yourself one hell of a set of games to start the season.

On a related note, I think it's a little ridiculous that a team should have to play 3 conference games before they even get to a non-conference game in their schedule...non-conference games are meant to be tune-ups/preparation for the conference schedule and to play nearly half of the conference schedule before getting a non-conference game is out of control...

I get that, but the fact remains Miami leaves the state of Florida exactly three times this year. Must be nice to set up a schedule that way.

see. that's my complaint against Texas. sure, they played Ohio State. but, other than that they rarely leave the state of Texas OOC. and they act like playing Rice is a "traditional SWC rivalry" when it's really a cupcake among the other cupcakes on their schedule. in the SWC, Ut had years where they never played outside the state of Texas. you want to tell me a roadie at TCU or Houston in the mid 80's was a tough road venue? with all the UT alums?
 
Sour grapes, don't ask me why. The fact is Miami's had the best result against the toughest schedule - so far.

BTW, I think the word "excuse" is way overused. Having a young team can be a reason for making mistakes, without it being used as an excuse.
 
A couple of things here. Not to take anything away from Miami, but as BuffAlum2007 pointed out 3 of these first 4 games are conference games, so you can't credit Miami for scheduling these games. Miami's non-conference schedule is OU, Florida A&M, at UCF, and at USF, which is still pretty good but not great as far as difficulty. For comparison, if you were to reshuffle CU's schedule such that their first 4 games were OU, OSU, WV, and KU then it would look equally tough.

As for Miami only leaving the state 3 times, they still have 6 road games. USF (Tampa) and UCF (Orlando) are both over 200 miles away, and FSU is almost 500 miles away, so the fact that 9 of their games are in the state of Florida isn't really that big of a deal. :huh:

If I was Miami, I would try to schedule as many games up north in the early part of the year due to the heat and humidity. I know they should be somewhat used to it, but it still takes it's toll on everybody. Play at home late in the year when the weather is better. Having a lot of games at home down the stretch would be nice. I know that it is not realistic and would be showing an unfair advantage to one team. I worked in Miami in Oct. and November several years ago. The weather is not bad that time of the year.
 
I'm not going to hate on Miami. I mean they play an OOC schedule quite similar to what we normally play, 1-2 tough ones and 1-2 decent teams. The fact that they don't play against Charleston Southern and whatever else Florida plays causes me to give them credit. They also don't need to leave Florida really. I assume that 80% of their players are from Florida, why leave to play teams of equal level? I honestly think that's what we should do. Playing against West Virginia and Toledo doesn't really help us in recruiting, maybe in Ohio it does; I'd rather see us play California schools or Arizona schools or something. Keep it regional unless we want to try to take on the big boys.
 
Miami won 2 conference games.. Why is everyone so impressed by that? Yeah, great scheduling.. :rolleyes:




And they are playing Florida A&M next week btw..
 
Oh I totally forgot FSU isn't OOC for them anymore. I was counting on that and when they occassionally play Florida. I sure would like to see some games vs Arizona and STDSU on our future schedule though!

I think we should sign a 10 year contract with Wyoming.. There's a team we can own..
 
Eh, I guess, I figure why not play OOC games where we actually recruit? Not sure we want many Wyoming players.
