New Woelk article about expectations.

I think Neil is as good as they come, but one FACT he failed to mention is that CU is the 16th winningest program in NCAA history. It seems that our expectations of having a winning program year in and year out is not that unreasonable.

not sure the culprit is fan expectations when the coach is saying we're gonna win 10. and Neil wrote 2-3 "after clouds, sunshine" or "be patient Buff fans" articles last season all of which would seem to point to winning in the future....that's the whole purpose of those articles, no?

Neil is maybe on a back-pedal here and shifting "blame" to a set of historical circumstances seems to obfuscate or make appear "inevitable" the current situation.

Kansas, Missouri and OK State recruiting well in Texas isn't the reason we got whipped by Toledo.

Good to know that my expectations were too high. I look forward to losing more games against Montana State, Toledo and CSU.

Is this true? "Fact: Of the three major Division I programs in Colorado, CU has the worst facilities." I have no access to "facilities" but I have a hard time believing CSU and AFA have better facilities.

If CU is right where we belong, the program needs to be shut down because it's a hole losing money.

Woelk, though, is a mouthpiece for the CU AD PR department.

This is an excellent question. How are facilities ranked and rated?
(Square footage of the weight room * number of equipment/age of equipent) + (Square footage of the team rooms * comfort of chairs * # of video screens * size of video screans) + (width * length of indoor practice facility) + (capacity of stadium * % average attendence / distance from dorm) + wow factor of locker room (bonus for play stations) + quality of training table + number of hot trainers/# of doctors on staff....

Or is it measures as $ spent over prior 5 years * appraised asset value of facility?

Is CU really last in the conference?

Sorry Neill, while some of your report is reality and a good review of history, it is not an excuse for what is going on now. Colorado is high up on the win column in NCAA history. Nobody expects top 10 year in and year out. However, people expect better than the present disaster. How is the present mess going to be addressed by looking into the past?

What is it, 14-26 and counting? Eliminating competition for a
position on the team. Poor coordinator hires. Disinformation(that's
a nice word) about personnel. Snide remarks in public. Flat affect
on the sidelines. Excuses. Gross failure with player grouping
concept. Excuses that receivers don't know the playbook and don't
know what to do. Well, who is coaching the receivers? On and on.

Don't give me any nonsense about the message getting old. The truth
mentioned above has gotten old. How big does the elephant in the
room have to get before Bohn and DiStefano take action?

I'll keep it up until I see 8 wins and a bowl win.

If you ever get a chance to get down to AFA, check out their facilities. Their field house has an indoor football/soccer/track with a 300 meter track. They have a baskeball arena and a hocky rink in the same building. Their outdoor fields are awesome as well. CSU just built a permanent indoor facility is all I can tell you about them.

You want to be jealous

I haven't been out to the AFA in about 10 years but I'd have to guess that being a service academy with a federal budget means they have pretty decent facilities. CSewe just opened a 13 million dollar indoor training facility and yeah it's a lot better than the creaky old Dal Ward center and our bubble.

Correct. I find it very funny that Neil is suddenly back-pedaling from all his talk about winning 7-8 games last season and again this season.

It is not unrealistic for Buffs fans to expect winning seasons every single year, or even 3 out of every 4 years.

Excellent points about Texas and California teams being down in the 80s, causing an exodus of high school talent. But it's more than that.

I know from excellent sources that McCartney's recruiting style was highly instrumental in our success, probably even more instrumental than these circumstances.

Bill literally carried a Bible into the homes of recruits, and as he was ready to leave, he asked the kids' mothers to "kneel with me" and pray with him that Johnny choose the right school.

Best thing about that strategy is that it wasn't a strategy. It was 100% genuine. He loaded up on talent with that style ... especially inner-city talent, thus, 10-win seasons, and even "What Price Glory."

Do you think a lot of the kids Bill brought in could get in today?

Clearly they couldn't. This is what I don't understand about our admissions policy, if we already had a history of taking partial-qualifiers and others with less than ideal academic backgrounds, why is it unreasonable to continue doing so?

Wow. The Zoomies are living large. I've always heard that across the board the Air Force has the highest standard of living in the military. I wonder what West Point and Annapolis have for facilities. Guess I could google it.

Have admission standards changed, regarding what, character or grades (or both?) If it has, then yes. Maybe guys like Shannon Clavelle wouldn't get in now ... and who was that DB who was a real thug?

It seems LOTS of guys get kicked or delayed for grades now. Never used to be like that ... or does the Internet give us info about "qualifying", and we're just now realizing that problem?

Minimum 7-5 every year is not unreasonable.

A good bowl game every year is not unreasonable.

Win the North every other year and compete for it every year is not unreasonable.

Win the Big XII every 4th or 5th year is not unreasonable.

We're not going to be USC, or Texas, but we can put forth a solid winning program the competes with the Nebraskas and beats the KUs and MUs every year. A program that doesn't lose to the CSUs and Toledos.

Exactly. Woelk's article is moot to me because we did this under Barnett. Consistant winning, won the North damn near every year, won a big 12 championship, were within percentage points of playing for a national title game, etc. Give me a break, Neil. Im a Hawkins supporter (assuming we win this year), but, this is the dumbest **** ive ever heard.

I lived in Colorado Springs for 4 years - Rockrimmon area. Just the other side of AFA. Everything on that campus is first rate - top of the line.

Yes, some of what he says it true, but facilities are not what ales the buffs now, it's poor coaching. Win 7-8 games a year and go to a bowl game and 10-12 games every 4 years and compete for a conference championship and you would see more money come into the program. We're on the 4th year of losing under Hawkins, would any of us feel good about giving money to this program right now.

Also, fix the Basketball programs. The Jury is still out on Bzdelic(sp?) bit if we don't see any improvement this year then I think he may be a bust and McConnell-Miller hasn't done anything on the women's side and this may be her last year.

If you want the money you have to win and I don't think we have the coaches who are getting it done, I'll give BZd. the benefit of the doubt for now, but he needs to step it up as well.

Fan's will come out if they believe you have a chance to win and are competitive but that isn't the case for our 3 big income sports. When they are not doing well then it hurts everything.

Now we are falling back on excuses on why we can't win.

I've got a "perfect storm" for Mr. Woelk ... next years offense will include a more mature and a VERY highly, ridiculously highly rated group.

Hansen, DScott, Simas and Simmons ... a maturing Givens, MTM's return, Miller and Solder as seniors (playing for Sundays). Our offense will average about 4 stars per man - all 11 across the board. Plus the 4-star average linebackers, and if Bonsu, Goree and Obi mature, the D-line will be above average at least. The 2010 secondary is a bit scary, but please ...

The 2010 offense could be a monster.

How convenient would it be if CU were to schedule a road game at the academy? Absent that, I have little opportunity or excuse to visit zoomie-world.

3 games into a ****ty 09 season (so far) and we are already talking about how good we are going to be NEXT YEAR. I'm gonna hurl.

"For starters, Colorado does not enjoy anywhere close to the financial support from boosters that schools such as Texas, Oklahoma, Michigan, Alabama, etc., enjoy. Neither is Boulder as supportive of the local university as residents from Ann Arbor, Mich., to Stillwater, Okla., to Eugene, Ore., are to their schools."
He's dead right there. Hey dude, let's check out what's going on at Naropa.

Good point ... from the article:

"As McCartney was building his program, he received the full support of CU's administration. It meant greatly improved facilities (the Dal Ward Center) as well as a much-more cooperative admissions policy with the help of then-president Gordon Gee. That has changed dramatically. If the same policies that are in place today had been in place in the McCartney era, many of the great players Mac brought to Boulder would never have been admitted to CU."

Boulder is more supportive of CU then Stillwater is to OSU, minus Boone Pickens. Trust me. Those people could give a ****.

Not that I really think it is that big a deal, but I wonder if coaches recruiting against CU do things like show the recruit those types of articles? I would.

If you are a golfer - AFA has 2 of the best golf courses in the United States - the Silver and the Blue. I've talked to friends who have played alot of the "so called" top courses, and they rate the AFA right at the top.
I have played both many times, and can't recall playing any better golf course. Their overall facilities are second to none.
