What we need from the next coach...

There are several scenarios that would play out in the coaching search.

First of all, there are only six players from the state of Texas on this year's roster. On Gary Barnett's last team, there were 16 players from the state of Texas. On the 2001 Big 12 Championship winning team, there were 11 players from Texas. Under Dan Hawkins, it seems like we have not brought in enough players from Texas. At the same time, KU and MU started to recruit harder in Texas.

KU's roster lists 32 players from Texas: http://www.kuathletics.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/kan-m-footbl-mtt.html

MU's roster lists 33 players from Texas: http://www.mutigers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/miss-m-footbl-mtt.html

KSU's roster lists 18 players from Texas: http://www.kstatesports.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=400&KEY=&SPID=212&SPSID=3062

NU's roster lists 20 players from Texas: http://www.huskers.com/SportSelect.dbml?spid=22&spsid=4&db_oem_id=100

ISU lists 21 players from Texas: http://www.cyclones.com/SportSelect.dbml?spid=4653&spsid=48388&db_oem_id=10700

I know that when I put ISU in, this seems to make my argument possibly go nowhere. However, the best teams in the North the last 2-3 years have been KU and MU and the number of players that they have brought in from Texas explains it all. NU will undoubtly step up their efforts in Texas and bring their numbers closer to 30-40 players from Texas.

I know that CU has traditionally recruited California hard but back in the Big 8 days, we could do that. Now with Texas schools in the Big 12, we need to recruit Texas harder and it seems like CU hasn't done that. Does this mean CU will suck for the next few years? I don't think that has to be the case but I believe that the small number of Texas schools recruited under Hawkins (and Barnett as well).

We need a coach who has a Texas background and a coaching staff that understands that we have to recruit Texas hard while continuing to recruit California hard.

Since CU is the subject of many Pac-10 expansion rumors, I have to wonder if the next CU coach will tell us which conference we will be in the coming years. The Pac-10 most likely will ask CU to join the conference sometime next year if the rumors of CU joining the Pac-10 in 2011 is true or not. If the Pac-10 is definetly interested in expanding, there has to be behind the scenes stuff happening by now.

If CU is to remain in the Big 12, we must get a Texas football coach period!

Mac successfully recruited both Texas and California at the same time.

I remember hearing Neu on the radio about 4 or 5 years ago, and he said that Colorado had a unique recruiting niche in that it could effectively recruit both states very well. I thought it was an interesting observation.

Dan McCarney actually recruited Texas pretty well. he wasn't going to beat UT or ATM or OU for the number 1's....but he was pulling kids from the dallas area and winning 6 games at Iowa State which ain't sniffing glue.

There was an article about the perfect storm that allowed McCartney to recruit Texas...Demise of SW conference, OU problems post switzer, SMU death penalty etc.

There's no perfect storm brewing now, yet Kansas and Missouri are hauling in some solid players from Texas. I don't see any reason why Colorado can't get a few kids from Texas every year. I also don't think it really matters where recruits come from, if they can play they can play.

Perfect storm be damned, the point is is that Texas' population keeps growing and UT, A&M, Baylor and TTech cannot take more kids than the 85 limit. Which means with population growth, there are more schools, more talented kids to be recruited. We have to get in there and get the best leftovers, for lack of a better term. We can't outrecruit UT in Texas, but need to stop getting outrecruited by ISU!!!!

Who's hated more right now, Hawk Sr and Hawk Jr or Al Davis and Jamarcus Russell?

I gotta say that I don't hate Cody at all... In fact, I think the kid has a great attitude, is a natural leader, and does the best he can. I think he's a good kid. Cody just does not have the skills or physical attributes to be a starter at this level.

Now, his dad is really pissing me off... I would love for him to go.

Sometimes I've wondered why Cody has not voluntarily stepped down on the QB depth chart... Surely he must be aware of his performance.

For starters, we need a bright, flexible coach who doesn't think that losses are part of the larger plan. Smiling and laughing after losses are not acceptable either, even for the nicest of guys (ever seen JoePa after a loss? nicest guy on Earth, but you want to avoid eye contact and get out of the way)

Well said...we are getting outrecruited by the five other North schools when it comes to Texas. Very unacceptable for CU standards. The numbers I put out clearly indicts DH of under recruiting Texas.

Truthfully, there is no excuse. Texas has a ton of talent that doesnt even get a sniff from UT, a&m, Tech, etc.. Another good thing about players from down there is they are usually well coached. There are some of the best hs coaches in the country down there, especially at the 4 and 5A programs.

They have good coaching?!? That's something that CU really needs!

I don't know about Carbal and Hagan...they have been at CU for quite sometime. Maybe it's time for some new blood?

nope, well coached good players don't fit our system...

and the 2010 coach will be.....

Dan Hawkins

We won't buy out his contract and we can't afford to pay 3-4 mill a year for a top notch coach, and we're no longer a power house program who will attract a top notch coach. Unless Hawkins resign we will be stuck with him until Bohn and Hawkins are both shown the door.

No way....he will be gone during the season, unless there is a miraculous turnaround (which is not going to happen).

Our Bohn-headed AD seems to want hawk to stick around for another few years

I was told by a booster who had lunch with Bohn following the Toledo game that he believes coaching continuity is the most important part of building a program and that if you look at any successful program the coaches have been there for years. He pointed to Pinkel and Mangino and said that fans at those schools wanted to fire them after 4 years but they stuck with them and eventually built successful programs. Sounds like BS to me as we continue to get worse but that is what he said and adamantly believes. Also, Bohn stated point blank that the school cannot afford to buy-out DH after taking a bath getting rid of Gary B.

And pains me to stay that Hawk will be our 2010 coach regardless of how much I disagree with it I will still support and cheer for CU football!

I hear you. Sh*t, I still wore my CU lid out last night and just smiled at the smack talk I heard. But the situation is out of hand. We are now the worst team in the B-12 and that cannot stand.

The school districts pay the football coaches handsomely, which attracts good minds to build good programs. We need more guys like Hugh Charles, who had the chip on his shoulder from not getting the Big 12 South looks and wanted to prove them wrong by playing against them.

On the Pac-10 note: No, no and no. While the outside Buff fan base is left coast-centric, there are no revenue sports at CU that make us an attractive pull and if we fielded one less team we wouldn't even be D-I worthy.

The thing it overlooks is the scholarship limits now in place. There are probably 250 division 1 players coming out of Texas every year. UT only takes about 18 of them, OU about 15. A&M is going to get a few but after that we are on even ground going against other schools. CU use to take 5 to 8 out of Texas every year. Hawkins has lost the Texas pipeline.

Oklahoma State has taken a big chunk out of Texas in recent years too.

TCU re-emerging also keeps more of them in-state.

But, there is still more than enough talent to go around and we don't seem to pay any attention at all to those kids. Wasn't Hankwitz a big Texas area recruiter for us?
