Big 12 Stats

I was going to post on the Special Teams thread, but I wanted to point out this:

2009 Big 12 Football
Individual Game Highs Through games of Oct 04, 2009

Darrell leads the big 12 in two categories. Maybe more, those two just jumped out at me.

Kick returns

8 Scott, Darrell (Colorado) at TOLEDO (09/11/09)
7 Stephens, Eric (Texas Tech) at Texas (Sep 19, 2009)
7 Smith, Lionel (Texas A&M) vs Arkansas (Oct 03, 2009)

Kick return yards
204 Scott, Darrell (Colorado) at TOLEDO (09/11/09)
183 Banks, Brandon (Kansas State) vs TENNESSEE TECH (Sep 26, 2009)

Maybe we are projecting a bit two much that he's not getting enough PT and is unhappy. Maybe he's okay with how things are going. There could have been some reason he didn't play as much at WVA, but he did well against Toledo.

I'm not going to pull out every stat to make a point, but I was surprised that some of our special teams are more "middle of the road" statistically than I expected.

Uh, is leading the Big 12 in kick returns for a single game a positive? Really?

Last in punt return average. 9th in FG percentage.

There are many, many statistics in there of which I'm not proud. I started to post this on special teams thread, but I thought it deserved its own discussion.

We are last or nearly last in too many categories. They might have to invent some new categories just for us at this rate.

My comments about Darrell were to point out he might not be as miserable as some have speculated --- but who knows.

I don't think he came here to return kicks. He came here to pound the ball 20+ times a game and win some games, he's not doing either of those.

Like WR says, I doubt Darrell came here to return kicks exclusively. Not exactly designing the offense around him.

Serious question. Every time he got the ball against WVU, it seemed like he just ran into the guys in front of him. Is this something he needs to correct or is the line not creating the space he needs?

I keep wondering if he was just so much stronger in high school than his opponents, that he could will himself to smash through walls, and he hasn't figured out how to play against people much bigger and stronger than he is. He can't barrel through guys 100 lbs. heavier than he is.

It always seems to be "hand the ball to DScott" and he runs straight through the middle -- and gets denied. But what's so different between him in HS and now?

I know he should be able to identify there is no hole to squeeze through and make a move to go outside. But he lowers his head and never looks for a hole. But I don't see him attempting this. Is that what you see?

Yeah I'm not sure what the deal is with him. Maybe he has tried to bounce it and the coaches told him to just stick to the play that is called. Maybe his footwork and agility are lacking, which could explain why he can't create when there's nothing there. I really don't know. I just don't know, but I do know that good coaches would figure it out.

Maybe they put him too close to the line again, I don't mind him being back a few more steps if that's what he needs right now. Also, no more running him from shotgun unless its a runoff tackle or pitch play.

Squawk has been successful in one area. He wants Colorado to be a model of consistency. Through the easiest non-conference stretch in decades he has achieved dead last in both total offense and defense in the Big 12. Way to go!

My thoughts...high school can show you the athleticism of an athlete. You still have to be coached up in college. DS is not being coached up...at all.

If DS was being coached up, I submit that he wouldn't be running into the guys in front of him. Coaching a RB means allowing them to use their own vision to see holes. When a RB gets 3-4 carries per game, he is not allowed to use his talent and he is not being coached up to see the holes that his line may be opening for him.

I can't even remember the game I was watching a couple of weeks ago where the announcers were emphasizing the vision of the RB. He could see when he was going to run into his own guys and in the same instant could see the hole that was created to the right of him through the corner of his eye. We are not even allowing DS to get this far.

I don't know what DS did to piss of our coaching staff. I don't care what he did actually. All I know is that his high school athleticism is being ignored at Colorado.

I am sad that our football program has allowed athletes to be ignored.

Absolutely spot on. All DS did is what his uncle did, what Blake Mackey and Brian White did, and what most of our WR's did to piss Hawkbanks off. They stood on their laurels to some extent. I think some felt they'd proved enough under Barnett, some felt they'd proved enough in highschool to get a crack at the starting lineup. Hawk doesn't operate that way. You have to earn it with him. The unfortunate thing is that while this is laudable in theory in practice it's been a goddamned disaster. I refuse to accept that DS has not been playing because he's not good enough. This young man was being hailed as the next Adrian Peterson by NFL scouts coming out of highschool. I Know... they're human and can be wrong but I don't think they'd be THAT wrong about him. No his sin was showing up overweight and not showing a lunch pail work ethic. You and I can talk about work ethic all day because we work in offices and file TPS reports and worry about performance evaluations and production bonuses. Talented football players just go out there and ball. This isn't rocket science. If the staff can coach them up to where they have a decent grasp of the playbook nature does the rest. DS is a better athlete than Espy. Can we agree on that? He had offers from just about every major program in the country. I'd wager that he'd be getting significant PT at any other school based on his raw talent. Best comparison I can think of at the moment is Lendale White. His work ethic is notoriously bad and he has weight issues but the kid flat out balled at USC and he's in the league now which is where DS wants to be. Anyone think he'll get there playing for Dan Hawkins?

ds is the man if hawkass would play him how can you show your skills if the play is called up the middle your first 2 carries then make you sit and watch speedy get all the caries off tackle sweeps to the sides..im sure if he took off to the edge and made a big play he would get pulled...anybody else watch the game on tv when cody threw a pass in the middle behind one of the wr and game to the sidelines hawk asked him if scotty was open and cody said no...

I do remember reading reports that DS didn't have great vision. I can see that, as he has trouble find the hole.
