A player's retort

I'm not perfect about criticizing players but the vast majority of my commentary is directed at the coaching staff and their decision making. I'm not a big money donor but I give what I can and apart from that my tax dollars help fund that kid's education. I'm sorry he feels that way but I'm not going to shut up because he was "appointed" to tell me to. I have a right to an opinion even if DBT doesn't think so and I'll continue to express it.

And besides, you are not posting on the other site, so you are good to go.

Wow.

A. I don't believe he's a player.

B. If the players are so concerned about us and the message boards, they have the wrong priorities.

C. They need to get their heads in the game and not worry about us bitching, it's our prerogative as fans to bitch and the majority of us are careful to keep our criticism to the coaches and not bash the players.

Exactly! And that's what I said over there.

Hey put your name on it and then I'll take it seriously.. I could go over and create an account and say that I'm a walk-on player and say exactly what he said..

and so does that player and his teammates.

This cannot be easy on them.

I know. Notice though, that nowhere did I suggest he shouldn't express his frustration. My primary point was that DBT posts this stuff and runs around calling everyone names like we should just shut the f**k up because he says so. Eff that. He doesn't have to like me and he doesn't have to read my posts, I'm here because this program MATTERS to me. DBT and that kid and every other counter-critic ought to worry that people are going to stop caring all together. Maybe then they'll have a perfect, criticism-free utopia where going 3-9 is okay and everyone gets a trophy for participating. I don't want to see that day come though.

I normally would not do this, but think it is important. I do not believe it is fake. Warning, this is from that other site that most of you hate.

Sounds like the players are sick of the negative posts

I say "DAMNED STRAIGHT!"

Browse through some of the posts and threads on the other site and I'd bet the negativity is amplified a lot more compared to here. But thats a guess on my part cause I dont go over there even to look.

I do agree with the premise. I have not criticized any of the players to my knowledge though there could be drunken rant somewhere. I have an opinion on some of them but it doesn't do any good to cut down someone based on what god did or didn't give em. Some kids have up days and down days. Some got it and some dont. That just the way it is in life.

The coaches are fair game.

Coaches tell you not to read the papers or watch TV during the season for a reason. Reading the internet is like joining the Emperor on the Dark Side with glee. Your gonna hurt from it sooner or later.

I have no idea what goes on at netbuffs, but most of the posters here are not attacking the players. We recognize they work hard and it's the coaches' responsibility to develop and game plan. That poster (player or not) recognized that and didn't have a problem with criticizing coaches. So, what's your point?

I can guarantee you that DBT does not think 3-9 is ok.

Reactions: DBT
No one attacks the players there anymore than here...some are frustrated with certain QUARTERBACKS...just like I read here.

There is really no difference between the two boards reg. the team/players at all.

I know because I am on both sites every day.

Yeah but sometimes we also create our destiny. The more we talk about the downfall of CU and keep coming at this with such negativity the more likely we are to fulfill our own prophecy. I don't know if this kids is real or not, but in todays age of social networking I don't find it hard to believe at all that our kids are reading our boards. We don't want them to take us serious but look at how serious we take each other. Good grief we got members calling each other out for showdowns at the Folsom corral.

You're right. It's like the stock market, consumer confidence drops, companies revise their earnings outlook, stock value plummets. The thing is though that we can't help it. It's human nature. Winning rules, losing sucks and since we've gone 14-31 since Nov. '05 there's a huge drop in our confidence. We just want the CEO to show that he gets it and is fixing things. Hawk's combative stance with the fans and the media is what's driving our angst over losing into rage against him for not delivering. That's my opinion and I could be wrong but how else should we look at it?

So let me ask you a question. If you were Hawkins, wouldn't you be defensive as well if you were putting in 70 hours a week, and doing everything you knew how to get things fixed, and all you kept hearing was fire his ass.

I know I would be defensive. Hell I know of many instances where I HAVE been defensive when I was busting my ass at work and some jackass shows up at a meeting, who hasn't spent 5 minutes trying to help starts pointing fingers at everyone else as to why things are late or not passing qual. I recall a VP calling me from home at 9 pm the night before thanksgiving telling me I had to stay at the office until I got the job done. I won't go into the details of how the entire conversation went, but as I recall at 1 point I asked him why his fat ass was at home with his family if this project was so important to him, rather than being in the office with me trying to get **** done. Needless to say, my upward mobility at that company was severely limited at that point. But screw him.

I know Hawkins is in the public eye and he has to have thicker skin, but I can also admit that I am not so sure I would handle it any better than he has. Most likely I would have handled it worse. I am sure a few FU's would have been thrown towards a few reporters during the press conferences.

He's a walk-on majoring in Engineering. There are exactly two players who meet that definition. Only one of them is on academic scholarship.

You found two?? I only found one listed in the media guide. And yes, it did appear he would likely be on academic scholarship.

The point NOT being who the player is, but the fact that the information fits with a player on the team makes the possibility that the poster is legit more likely...

Assuming it is legit, I think the reaction is about the only reaction I could expect from somebody inside the team. You know they are busting their asses, you know they are PISSED about the results so far, and to see a bunch of "outsiders" dissecting the situation has got to piss you off. Imagine a bunch of people dissecting a particularly bad day at your job without actually working where you do and you might get an idea of where that post might come from. I really don't think it would matter how much those people cared about your job, hoped and prayed for you to succeed, how much they knew about your job or were trying to help you. In the midst of a ****ty day they are only going to PISS. YOU. OFF.

:stupid:

I've been an avid Hawk supporter for 3 years and 1 and a half games. I have defended his coaching and decision making the whole time, but enough is enough. I will always support every single player, and I know they are stressed as hell. We are effing Colorado for eff sake. This isn't ISU, or Duke, or CSU, or Idaho! This is one the top 20 winningest programs of all time! We have won and competed for multiple national titles, won and competed for dozens of conference championships. We have every single effing piece of hardware a player can win. This program is better than 14-27. After this weekend, Dan Hawkins will have a record at CU equating to one win for every two losses in 3.5 years coaching at Colorado. This is EFFING unacceptable!!! This man said himself "no excuses". A sleepwalking monkey could and should have Colorado at .500 based on historical results. So I guess if you are ok with this, then in my opinion you are sadly underestimating what Colorado football is all about, and I would be willing to bet that former coaches and players feel even more strongly about it than I do. Ok getting off the soapbox now.

I hear you. What you described is pretty much an integral part of office life and how we deal with it is what determines whether we advance in our field or develp an ulcer. I don't know what I would do in his position. The most I'll ever coach is pop warner so my view is limited. Nevertheless I think there's something to what you said about being in the public eye. In my opinion this job consists of equal parts of gameday managing, recruiting, and publicity managing. He may be working on the gameday stuff to get it fixed and for all we know he may be doing fine with the recruits but he's losing the third part... badly. We matter. It may sound trite but if the fans aren't happy you're not doing your job right. He doesn't have to jump through hoops to make us happy either just let us know that our concerns matter and that we're not all morons to him. That's what I take from his comments about how if we don't coach we don't understand. I posted a quote from Vince Lombardi a while back that said "Some people try to see things in football that aren't there. Football is two things: blocking and tackling". We may not be coaches but we can see that your X's and O's are not in order coach. We can see that the blocking and tackling isn't right. Is it really that hard to change things up a bit to please the fan base? If it fails miserably well... we're already failing.

Exactly. It was too specific of information for a joker. He didn't mean to "out" himself, but he came pretty close to identifying who he is.

I bet it is really disheartening to read any of the fan boards, if you are a player. It's disheartening to me and I'm just a fan!

This is where I don't agree. He should not change things up to please the fan base. He should win football games to please the fan base. I don't care what changes he makes on the field or who he starts to make that happen. And I, as the uneducated fan, recognize that while I think I may know what I would do to make that happen, there is a reason my ass is in front of the TV on Saturday watching the game and not on the sideline. In the end my final judgment of Hawkins will be based on his record, not who was on the field during those wins and loses.

There's two engineering majors on the team (both bios are in the media guide that's online at cubuffs.com)...only one of those bios makes reference to a player having an academic scholarship to CU...

Anyone else find it rather ironic that the first post to the kid was telling him to STFU followed by several other posts telling him that that players need to win if they don't like it. Instead of Hey, sorry you feel this way, we support you guys 100% and we will do our best to make sure we make that clear in the future.

Especially considering the evidence indicates that there may be some legitimacy to poster claim of being a player.

Cliffs Notes version:

Walk On player-Appointed by other players to post.
Players reading fan boards
Players not happy that they are getting ripped by fan boards
Players trying their best and working very hard to fix things
Coaches working very hard
Cody has team respect
