Anyone brought up this guy yet?

Not to my knowledge, but why would he leave a BCS program that is competitive in it's conference to come to one that isn't?

He started out in the Big12 and had some great D for the time he was a KSU.

I also don't buy into the his current job is better than ours approach. I don't know what he is making at South Florida, but if the CU job came with a raise and better perks why wouldn't he come here?

Eh, he's built a program based on Florida talent, the majority of which are non-qualifiers at schools like FSU and Miami. they're like the K State of Florida, except instead of JUCOs, they just accept anyone, and because of that, they get some really good players.

Until he does it at a school with standards, I gotta say no way.

Exaaaaactly. You think Coach Hawkins is frustrated with restrictions placed on bringing in academically marginal players? This guy would be suicidal.

Besides, the husker fans would get all sore in the anal region claiming that we were trying to hire an even goofier looking head coach than they had.

Of course our efforts would have fallen well short (hypothetically speaking)...

I don't think you will pull him out of there. He built the program from scratch and his is well paid. Would be a good candidate if he was interested in leaving.

Considering he has turned down Alabaman and KSU I don't disagree. If we end up making a coaching change I want to see some with this type of credentials pursued though.

I might be being greedy but I want the next Mack Brown, when he left NC. I want to bring a guy in who is young enough to be around 15+ years and breed success. Timing can be everything when it comes to coaching changes as well. Sure wish Johnson was still at Navy because he would have been high on my list as well.

Brian Kelly is a name I have seen mentioned that I think would fit this mold.

I like Johnson too. My only problem with that is the system he runs. As shown against Miami earlier this year, if you get behind in that triple option attack you're done.

Here is my formula -

1. Hire a coach who is a recruiting whiz.
2. He must have been mentored by a major coach at a BCS school.
3. He must have coordinator experience preferably at a BCS school.
4. Make sure that he is a good fit culturally for the program (hard to define). Mallory is an example of a guy who was not a good fit.

If you look at a lot of the top coaches that is the way their resumes lay out. It worked for Crowder (they did not have coordinators in his day) and McCartney.

If you look at McCartney almost every member of his staff was a strong recruiter - Simmons, Gregory, Steckel, Barnett, Lucas, Miles, Dorrell, Heater, Cabral, Neuheisel, etc. Everyone of those guys had a reputation as a strong recruiter. I have to believe that recruiting ability was a top criteria when Mac hired an assistant.

No. You have done a pretty good job already.

I always wondered what the hell he was explaining in that picture: (a) how to bake a cake; (b) the last time he changed the oil in his car, or (c) his visit to the proctologist.

"So you see, Toledo's quarterback runs this way, right? And then both of our safeties--honest to God, BOTH of them--run over here!"

Charlie Strong fits the first three perfectly, and the fourth is pretty nebulous. Everybody thought Hawk was a good fit, until he was exposed as a fraud.

Juicebox in one hand, orange slice in the other?:smile2:

Yes but he did not have any of the first 3 which should of eliminated him.

I agree. However, as I said in another thread, looking back at it, I think Hawk was the right guy for the job at the time. You remember the garbage that assholes like Sally Schrager were throwing at CU, it was a media feeding frenzy. Nothing the school could do was right. Our priorities at that time were different from what they are now. While I agree with your list of qualifications for our next hire, that list was dramatically different with our last hire. That list probably looked something like:

1. Is good with the media
2. Has a reputation for running a clean program
3. Can get along with the faculty & community
4. Has a reputation for winning games.

He fit all four of those criteria. I suspect (although there's no way of knowing for sure), that this was what Bohn and Neinas were looking for when they were searching for Barnett's replacement.

And in the end no matter who we want or talk about we can't hire a new guy until Hawkins gets fired anyways

The reality of it all is that you have to have 2 elements;

1. Successful recruiting. Without it your dead.
2. Successful preparation/coaching.

Number 2 is almost as important #1. If your good at #1 but not so good at number #2 you can always hire assistants that are. You cant make without good ingredients.

Florida doesn't have state income tax, so he'd have to make about 6% more at CU just to break even.

I could conceive of him leaving USF for us. In Florida he will always be behind the Gators, Seminoles and Hurricanes no matter what he does and here he'd be the top dog. We'd have to have a massive bake sale to come up with the funds to get him but I don't think it's impossible. Unlikely yes but not impossible.
