It is hard for me not to look at the glass half empty at this point, but I can't help but look at the future of this program given this season and the current HC situation; which brings us to a major dilemma. On one hand, if we are successful for the remainder of the season (ie 6-1 or maybe 5-2 to finish) Hawk possibly keeps his job and we have another year of this to look forward to. On the other hand, if he continues to lose we will see the snowball effect have a major impact on the future of this program. Here is what I see as huge problems that will have a major effect on recruiting, retention, and the program/university:
1. The Players...
Simmons - Works his ass of to get here, has to jump through hoops to practice, doesn't see the field. here is a guy with only two years of eligibility to play and he gets screwed in this system and becomes wasted talent.
Hansen - last year he burns a redshirt only to play a minimal part in a sub-par season, this year he redshirts and is back to contribute to an already lost season, wastes a full year of eligibility on 2 games and (hopefully) half a season. Wasted 2 years of talent.
DS - #1 running back out of HS, splits carries and is ineffective with our weak o-line last year, hardly sees the field this year. wasted talent
Simas - I understand he has been "knicked up", but this kid can play and has seen minimal action. wasted talent (partly his fault do to personal issues which prevented him from playing in previous seasons.
2. This Offseason - unless we see a new head coach, expect another horrific offseason with players departing for greener pastures.
3. Recruiting - all this television exposure has shown possible recruits that they can come play for the Buffs and be embarassed on National TV on a regular basis and the more talented they are, the less they will play. However, I anticipate Boulder will become a mecca for the Rudy's out there playing the receiver position.
4. The entire AD - Without money being made from football, the entire athletic department is in jeopardy; it is no secret that a huge chunk of the ADs money is made from football. Without that money the AD will look to cut other sports and put our Big12 status in jeopardy as well.
5. Donations - a rapid decline in season ticket sales next year and substantial donations due to the lack of performance on the football field will substantially effect our ability to retain players, recruit players, and maintain the football team.
6. Exposure - For all of the Buffs outside of the Colorado, the opportunities to see the Buffs play on TV are going to be reduced to the CSU game and 1 or 2 blowouts against top big12 competition. And for those in the area, the game will be able to be seen on some ****ty network, not in HD, with ****ty anouncers and horrible camera views.
7. Tradition - Colorado Football has a tradition of winning. In Hawks tenure, 4 years at the end of the season, we are establishing a tradition of losing. This years graduating class of HS seniors will only know the Buffs as a losing program which will add to the recruiting woes.
