The Problem is not Coach Hawkins

The problem is now Mike Bohn, the buck has to stop somewhere, DH is a nobrainer, why can't anyone see where the real problem is? Come on Mike belly up, you made a bad decision 4 years ago and now it's time to pay the piper. You and your coach need to move on.

If Bohn can raise the funds to get rid of Hawk all the better, he can stay. If not, he needs to be gone for that contract extension he gave Hawk.

Mike Bohn did not make a bad decision 4 years ago. The bad decision was 2 years ago when he signed Juicebox to the extension.

One way or the other, Bohn's got to show some leadership. Either attach his sail to Hawk completely by throwing all his support behind him... or announce that Hawkins will not be the head coach in 2010 unless the team makes it to a bowl game and wins it.

Bohn will do what's right for the school and the athletic department. This talk about firing Bohn is absurd. The guy is a superstar athletic director. People are pissed off right now and they should be, but Bohn isn't in charge of making sure the players know what they're supposed to do and were they're supposed to be.

wrong, it's his responsibility to have an manager in place to make those decisions. Under Mike Bohn we have become the laughing stock of the Big 12. I now know what my Baylor friends went through for years

:yeahthat:

Bohn is not the problem at this point, but the ball is definitely in his court and depending on how he plays it we will know. If he faces reality and takes action that is in the best interest of the program and the university then he's good. If he fails to be decisive then the University needs to show him the door too.

No. It's his responsibility to run a profitable athletic department. He's never failed at that. Not once since he got here.

His coaching hires have not worked out. I wouldn't argue otherwise. Frankly, they've been disasters - all of them. But I've said it before and I'll say it again - hiring coaches is maybe 10% of his job. The rest of his job is keeping boosters happy, raising money, getting facilities built, public relations, and getting butts in the seats. He's been nothing short of awesome in those roles.

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Fire Hawkins, yes. He's in so far over his head he can't see the surface. Bohn is a professional, and he's very, very good at what he does.

He is a superstar when it comes to PR and when it comes to fundraising, not when it comes to picking a good HC. He can and should change that. If not, perhaps we need to go in a different direction. He doesn't need to make decisions now, but he really has to be doing stuff behind the scenes.

Today was evident that last week was a fluke. TT in 06 was a fluke (in 07 we won b/c of TWheat's 3 INTs and Dizon's pick 6), OU in 07 and WVU last year was a fluke. That's all apparently we are good for. Today's game wasn't even close, it was only close because KSU didn't have the playmakers available to put the game completely out of reach.

let's see how many butts are in the seats next home game.

At the end of the day, Bohn understands that all the PR in the world is meaningless if the product on the field of play sucks. Right now, the product on the field of play sucks. I have confidence he'll do what's right.

Agreed with running a profitable AD. If Hawk stays I'm not going to renew my season tickets and I'll even hand write a letter to Bohn about it. Will he care about losing my cheapest seats? No. But as an out of state season ticket holder I'm sure as hell not as frustrated as some of the big coffers we have. We have them too.

Given that FB is the bread and butter for our AD we are going to have to start giving away tickets. The 2 for 1s and 4 for 40s are good deals, especially long term. However, people don't want to see a loser even if it's cheap. I went to NMSU for my ugrad where the tickets are $9 for a pretty good seat...they don't sell out and if we continue on this path with this coach we'll be in the same boat.

I agree with most of what you're saying in this thread. But part of his job is also to make good hiring and contract decisions with his coaches. His track record is terrible in that aspect of his performance.

Based on what? Just because he's isn't as incompetent as Dick Tharp doesn't mean he's a good athletic director..

None of his hirings in past have set the world on fire.

Lemme tell you a story. Yesterday, I was in Downtown Denver. I'm driving around and I'm seeing all these banners on the lightpoles. You know the ones. There were something like 20 of these banners advertising CU football - in DOWNTOWN DENVER.

The Pearl St stampede. Selling out the luxury boxes. Improvements to the Potts Field track complex. Practice bubble. Increased revenue in the face of gawd awful on-field performances by the major sports in the department. Better media coverage. Better community relations. Improved communication. All of these are just a few examples of things he's done. His job is herculean, and we shouldn't be so quick to criticize. His one issue has been hiring coaches. I really, REALLY hope he gets that ship righted and soon. We can't afford another asshat like Hawkins.

I have the gut feeling that he is probably on the phone with the big dog doners working the deal to eject hawk right out of the coaches seat at CU. Just like Hawk only put TH in to try to save his job; Bohn has toknow that if he waits too long on Hawk, his next deal will to be working the 'two for one' moving company deal.

So in other words, he's doing what he's hired to do..

He's done a good job in what you described but bottom line its about winning football games.. The guy he said was a home run has become a total flop..

Bottom line for Hawk is winning football games, not Bohn. You're right, he's done what he was hired to do. How can you fire a guy who has done what he was supposed to do?

You'll get no argument from me about his hires. Hawkins is an unmitigated disaster.

I think Hawkins WAS a home run.

He had a terrific record at a small program.
He ran a CLEAN program.
He was charismatic, not offensive, knew how to communicate with the media, etc.

As someone said in another thread - the mistake was not the original hiring of Hawkins. The mistake was - when Hawkins had very limited success at CU - Bohn gave him a huge extension that tied CU's financial hands for years to come.

Even the extension was a good idea - at the time. Neil Woelk wrote a column about making sure we got an extension done. At the time of the extension, we all thought we had legitimately turned the corner and were on our way back to the promised land. We didn't want to have that process derailed. We were all worried that Hawk would be the next coach at Notre Dame. If only we were so lucky.

Very much disagree. Hawkins has not performed up to expectation. But he has a hot hire 4 years ago and Bohn made the right decision to bring him to CU. The question now, is "Unless something miraclous happens between now and the end of the year, is Bohn willing to make another good decision and move in a different direction."

This is the kind of stuff I can do without.....

gawd, we are stricken with bad karma or something. Only thing a little better is that Corn got beat at home again, and the goats also got beat at home and are 04 in the MWC

wait!! Hack couldnt beat the f-in goats? what does that say about hsi coaching ability? WTF did he do for 9 months in the offseason?

I am going to respectfully disagree.

CU announced that they had signed Hawkins to an extension on October 7, 2008. At the time, he had a record of 11-19 at CU. His original contract was to run through the 2010 season, so there was still over 2.5 years left on the original contract. There was no reason, at that time, to sign him to a contract extension.

At the very least - if a contract extension WAS entered into - it should have contained much better buyout provisions.

And now at CU he is 0-3, which is worse than his record...which is pathetic.

Hindsight is always 20/20. At the time of the extension, it was pretty much agreed that it was appropriate. Let's not play revisionist history here. It's abundantly clear that the wheels have fallen off since then.

bohn is in a tight spot. yeah, he did it to himself to a large extent, but it isn't going to be easy.

if he fires juicebox, it costs CU somewhere around 3mm. we can debate the actual number, but let's call it 3mm for now, just to whack the juicebox. then, he'd still have to go get another coach to come here and it will probably take a few more million to do that. all of this money would have to be borrowed from the CU Fund or raised from donors. this would be in addition to the $ already borrowed. that's a fairly good chunk of change.

so, he's weighing that, i suspect, against the loss of revenue (tv, donations, ticket sales) from continuing to let this bush-leaguer and his buds run our crown jewel program. that's a tough analysis to do right now. the crowds came out last week v. ku. will they against mizzery? and what about down the road as the complete hopelessness of the situation really sinks in? and what about donors? no one wants to throw good money after bad.

i think he's hoping against hope for the miracle turnaround or at least enough improvement that he can continue to somehow sell the prospect of future success under juicebox. but, that ship has sailed, imho. these guys are dead-men walking. bohn is going to have to come to grips with that. i am sure he'll even try the easy way out: offering up a few assistant coaches because that's way cheaper than firing juicy. but, that's going to be too little, too late.

here's how this is going to go (a not so bold prediction), sez swami liver:

our Buffs are tracked in for a 5 win season at best. at best. i suspect it will be worse than that. we are done on tv except for mizzery, the fuskers, and maybe osu. there will be north of 10k unsold tickets for each of the remaining home games, except the fuskers (who will fill the stadium with red). bohn will continue to hear from big boosters and from season ticket holders. the pressure will build as this historically bad season winds down. the CUAD will be placed even further into the red. hawkins and the whole staff will be fired thanksgiving weekend. cabral and possibly hagan (and that is no sure thing) will be retained by whomever the new hc is. a new coach will be announced by december 20.

there is no other path out, imho. bohn will do this, even tho he doesn't want to, because he will want to save himself.

Liver,

Nice analysis.

Only thing I want to point out is that the you can't call both the buyout and the new coach salary new expenses. If Bohn doesn't fire Hawkins, he still has to pay him. The additional money to find is the buyout + or - what the new coach's salary is.
