We can hate each other, love each other. Whatever. But one thing I think we all pretty much agree on now is that Dan Hawkins is not the answer here. So, where do we go from here? Do we come up with a package for a "name" guy, or do we take another shot at an up and comer? Seems we tried that 4 years ago. Looks like it isn't going to work. I'd say, if there are boosters that are willing to blow a couple of million to buy a guy out, why not spend a couple of million extra to pay a top notch salary?

Is Venebles a winner because he's a winner or because he has stellar athletes at D?

I'd go with OU's OC. They beat the snot out of KU today without their star QB and without their star RB.

Still not sure if that's a good choice. Either way we need someone that knows the Big12. That knows how to win on the road and in cold, ****ty and hostile environments.

Funny. Allbuffs is becoming a "cold, ****ty and hostile environment."

I don't presume to know. I thought McDaniels was gonna suck, but he's basically been amazing - that means I must basically suck. I defer these opinions to people who get paid.

I'd be very surprised if the money is there to go after a real big name guy - a guy who is winning right now at a top notch program. I think the choice will basically be a young up and comer or an older guy trying to get back into a BCS program. I would rather they go with an up and comer, I think the other is a dead end road.

But whatever they do, they've got to get the choice right. I really think there is talent here to build on, but if we get another bad coach it may be a long, long time until we recover... :sad1:

So, we are going to have to go for the crap shoot? Roll the ****ing dice? Great. We are ****ed forever unless we get really lucky. That's the way I like to do business. Hope for luck. ****.

That's the problem. Our AD, in terms of University, state and alumni funding, is one of the worst in the country.

Not to mention, Hawk is the 11th highest paid coach in the big 12. That is without a $3 million buyout. You think we are strapped for cash now, just wait until after the buyout.

Dave Logan might be our only option. In case he is too expensive, my middle school coach might be available. We won a few games.

I'd like to see them go after a top-notch assistant from a top-notch program.

Muschamp, from Texas, comes to mind.

I think Muschamp has been promised the Horns HC job when Brown calls it a career. But I do get your point

That's assuming Brown doesn't turn into Paterno or Bowden and hang around for an other couple decades.

If Muschamp were offered, he'd be thinking about that.

Echoes from the ATX here...Muschamp is going nowhere. And even if he did, he'd probably end up pulling a Chizik and come back to UT the minute Mack hung 'em up.

Also, even if Mack pulls a Paterno/Bowden, Muschamp is guaranteed something in the range of $2-4M as compensation from UT for going back on their word.

As much as I'd love to have him, Muschamp will not be coming to Boulder.

What's everyone's thoughts on Embree?

Going Deep...

A lot of folks in Austin seem to think that Mack may hang it up either after this season or announce that 2010 will be his last, especially if Texas wins the national championship this year.

Defense wins championships. I would go with Venebles, too.

I'll argue this with ya. I'd go "DC" not OC. OU gets half of all the blue-chippers they target, losing the rest of USC, Florida & SEC, and only 1 out of 7 to UT and other Big 12 schools. That's great recruiting.

For Defense.

They're about 1 out of 6 against Big-12 recruiting opponents, so OU's offensive recruiting is a step behind the defense.

That's why I'd vote "go with the DC". At the same time, when OU loses, most Sooner fans rag on Venebles. Specifically. Taking Venables might please 49% of Sooner fans. Maybe only 45%. But "replacing him" has occurred to 100% of them.

That's the big point in your favor. I'd still look at SOME defensive-minded person. Something tells me that the Spread Offense is on its way out, and a good defense will help it out the door.

Good point, however, Brown is stubborn when it comes to UT recruiting. If a kid doesn't show interest by his early Jr year then Brown won't consider him. A lot of Longhorn fans dislike that he isn't aggressive and when he loses a guy to OU because they pursue the guy (see AD) a lot call for his head. This is for a coach that has won something like 10+ wins 8 seasons in a row.

Venebles does have strong ties to Texas though so it'd be a major upgrade. I'd be fine with him as long as we went after an OC or someone else that could recruit Cali. Given our location we must go after both areas to get back. Now we just need someone with ties to the South to snag 1-3 guys a year.

NMB, you've hit an incredible strategy - finding a top-notch DC (or OC) with a long history of recruiting in one region, and then selecting his staff with good histories of snagging the other two (Calif, TX, Florida are the 3 main regions I'd shoot for). Heck, every new HC has to find an OC, DC and recruit coord - plenty of chances for a long-time asst coach to build up a catalog of 'his friends' to call on and join him.

we need a guy that's a great recruiter. that likes speed. we obviously chose the exact opposite.

Who said anybody likes that?? But unless you know somebody who is going to kick in enough money to pay Hawk $3 million to go away and somebody else in the range of $3 million annually to come in (the going rate for true top-flight established head coaches), your only other choice is an out-of-work retread. And that doesn't have to be a bad thing - Mac was an assistant from a top program, Chairbanks was an NFL head coach who got big money to come to CU. Whatever road you choose, the important thing is to get the right guy....

Hawkins is making less than many of the coaches I'd go after... So you are looking at Hawk's buyout, plus the coaches buyout, plus a commitment of about $1M extra per year.

Everyone here better start rooting for a 4-1 finish because Hawk's back next year unless someone can find a couple extra million. IF that happens, then expect a head coach to be named the from a 2nd tier BCS school or nonBCS. Sort of like when Cincy got Brian Kelly from Western Michigan or wherever he was at.

Frankly, I'd settle for a new offensive line coach. I've seen no progress to speak of but I've seen progress most other places..... Denver is not getting it done.

Do we have any coaches aside from Hawk that are under contract past this season??

I will root for a 4-1 finish. (Hell, a 5-0 finish...) I'm funny about rooting for my teams to win. But will I be doing it in hopes that Hawk will somehow stay? **** no...

You think a coaching change at OL is going to make a lick of difference? Good luck with that.

The money is there if needed to go after an experienced BCS coordinator.
