If you are an AD, you just cannot hire and fire guys willy nilly. And that is my view point. Look how our emotions change from week to week. An AD cannot let emotions enter into any decision. An AD has to wait it out, through the highs and lows, before making a decision. And that is the way I try to view things. I think that is what Mike is doing. He has to evaluate where we are, logically, without emotion. When you do that, any decision becomes much more difficult. Most on this board would hand Hawkins a pink slip without thought of consequences. Mike cannot do that and I would hope he would not do that.

DBT ...
If you would not say "most on the board" think this, or want that, it would be easier to converse with you.

I get it about Bohn's difficulty. I really do. Which is why I don't want to harm Hawkin's chances with recruiting or even winning one more game this season, as I suspect CU's circumstances mean this coaching team will be here next year.

So, "most on the board" ... there are a lot of opinions out there...

Of course an AD has to be more rational than the average fan. But an AD also cannot be blind. He is watching the same games we are every Saturday. Even the most ardent Hawk supporters see that this team is poorly coached and poorly prepared 9 times out of 10. We are in year four of the Hawk tenure and I honestly cannot tell you what the team identity really is right now or if we even have one. I am sure Hawk and Bohn talk about this kind of stuff, what can Hawk honestly say they are doing right at this point in time?

Fans are prone to knee-jerk reactions, but we are way past that point now. People are pissed, but even more than that, people are resigned to the fact that this team is just not very good. Once you reach that state as a fan base, there is a big problem. We are coming dangerously close to apathy.

I have wanted Hawk out since week 2. Last week did not change my opinion of him one iota.

An AD also has to face reality when making a decision. "Waiting it out" can become a crutch, a way of not facing a difficult decision. "Waiting it out" can confuses wishes and fantasies with realistic possibilities. I do not expect anything to be done before the end of the year. I'm not sure making a mid-season change would be a positive for the program in the long run. But we are now getting very close to 4 full seasons. Things aren't getting better. Coaching decisions are actually getting harder and harder to defend. Bohn could choose to sit back and let Hawk's contract play out in the name of "waiting it out". But is there any empirical evidence that things are going to get better if he does? That they won't get worse?? Nobody has been able to present any, just vain Hawk-like platitudes and implications that better things are going to magically materialize out of thin air...

Yeah, I get your point. Sorry about that. I know we are all in the same boat, so to speak. But I bet you never get neg reps.

Bohn's biggest mistake was the contract extension, it was done with good intentions. He hired him, so I can understand his loyalty, but that was a big mistake.

As always, you more eloquently express what I am thinking than I do. ****er.

Yeah, I get neg reps, but I immediately put the jerk on IGNORE so I punish them that way by never getting to enjoy my future banter -- at least directly.

They don't even know who they are, except Matt Thompson. That was so obvious...

That is a really good point. Bad move by Mike there.

I'm much more emotional than I would be if I was in Bohn's position. I'm a fan. It's not my job to be businesslike.

But I can also put my business hat on very easily. I can guarantee that I would not have granted an extension 2 years ago. That was an emotional decision and a mistake. At the end of last season, I would have demanded staff changes. Helfrich would have been gone in December, so Kiesau wouldn't have only had fall camp to implement an offense (or we would have had time to bring in an experienced OC). Collins would have been gone and Brown promoted. Riddle would no longer be in charge of Special Teams. And if Hawkins didn't like that after 3 losing seasons, he could have resigned.

But that's all spilled milk, water under the bridge, a fast swimmer out the condom. It is what it is. And what it is right now is a head coach who has proven he cannot motivate this team, make sound personnel decisions, or manage a game (field position, clock or taking risks that ever work). Further, recruiting was a disappointment in 2009 and 2010 is hanging by a thread.

If I was AD, I would fire Hawkins immediately and put Cabral in place as Interim Head Coach. I'd then have my new HC by the end of November so he'd have 2 1/2 months to recruit.

Whenever I think about the contract extension, it reminds me that Goodman got a scholly by making one field goal. Those two actions seem inexplicably entwined to me. Two peas in a pod.

I should add that I'm sure Bohn feels the pressure now. I think he knows that the next football hire he makes better be a success, otherwise his ass is on the line. So I think he should be taking his time and making a reasoned decision because his career is on the line as well with how he deals with the current situation. I really do not care whom he hires, he just better make the right hire.

Dude, we are all wanting the same thing. I just am not in line with your position on how we get there (although you are coming around ). With that being said, I would never neg rep you for your take on it. Disagree yes, neg rep no. You have gotten close with some of the rants about idiots and assholes, but not far enough for me yet! :smile2:

I just want to see this thing get on track for improvement. Do not think it is possible with this staff any more.

I would agree that he needs to make a decision without emotion involved and think it through but just last night, you wanted hawk gone and now you're starting yet another thread on why hawk shouldn't be let go right now? :wow:

No, ****ing no! He has to go!

Hey, I should be a rapper.

There is an ample body of evidence to support Hawk's termination. My decision to quit supporting him after week 2 was not based on just two games. When I wrote Bohn after the Toledo game, I told him that it was "abundantly clear" that Hawk could not help us any more. 5 games later, I don't know what adjective is stronger than abundant, I guess it is now crystal clear that Hawk can't help us? How much more evidence do we need? On the flip-side, is there the slightest bit of evidence to suggest that Hawk can get it done?

Over the last 5 games, I have gone from wanting him gone to a strong dislike of him. Not only are the results infuriating (offense is bad, special teams are pathetic, clock management is bad, false starts, it goes on and on and on) but the guy has shown that he is a hack job as well from a relations standpoint. The fact that there is a legitimate question as to whether this guy plays favorites only deepens my dislike for him. 5 games ago, I wanted him gone because of results. Now, it's everything. I won't go as far as to call him scum, but I don't think much of the man.

Well, I wouldn't attack him personally. I think he is a good guy. But he sucks as a coach, thats for sure.

I wouldn't either. The scum comment was in reference to how he feels about us. All of my criticism relates to his inability to lead our football program, i.e., his job.

I most respectfully disagree.

I believe the timing is not right just yet. However, the next three games are Missouri, Texas A&M and Iowa State. Respectively, games 5, 4 and 3 left on the season. If I am the AD perhaps I begin the in formal process now (talking to boosters and looking at informal candidates) with the idea that if he loses MU or A&M badly and/or loses ISU then I pull the trigger early and tell Hawk NU will be his last game as the NU head coach. You go 0-3 with those three and theres not really any reason to keep him. Making the move early invites candidates to show interest informally through their agents. It leaves the possibility that the recruiting class coming up can be saved because someone is in place.
