Can football's ineptitude help attendance at basketball games?

Are CU fans so starved for success that they'll support the basketball team, even if they've never been a fan before? That's kind of where I'm finding myself these days. I'm incredibly disappointed in the football team. I want desperately to be able to root for a winner at CU. I'm halfway considering going to a few games this year just to watch CU win at something - anything.

From the few accounts I've seen so far on the basketball team, attendance and enthusiasm seems to be up. Obviously, winning is helping. But in the past, the OOC schedule was of no interest to most folks. I wonder if the fact that the football team sucks eggs is actually helping the basketball team.

Thoughts?
 
Maybe it helps with some people. I love basketball, though, so it was easy for me to throw my support behind the CU program when I started to like what I was seeing from it. I'll be interested to hear what people have to say.

Right there with you man. I get so depressed thinking about the football team these days, I think its time to latch on to the 2d fiddle show and see where it takes me. (that is not a knock on the bbal program, thats just truth... hell, would be awesome if it was even steven with the football program tho, great for everybody!
 
It's kind of sad that this is the reason that people will support MBB. But I guess CU will take it however they can get it.

Not so bad if this is why someone will come to a game and then the play of the team can convince them to keep coming back for more. Sometimes the hardest thing is to get a person in the stands the first time.
 
I remember back in the days when Chauncey was here, we had a very good basketball team. Even still, attendance at the OOC games was sparse. If we're getting decent crowds on a Monday night to watch San Francisco, there's something more to it than just winning.

Flip it around - if the football team had just come off of a 9-3 season and was preparing to play in the Cotton Bowl or Holiday Bowl, would attendance at the basketball games be as good? I personally don't think so.

I remember the crowds being decent when chauncey was here. Especially during conference play. At least that's how I remember it.

The football season really has little affect on attendance. People want to see a competitive product. CU BB hasn't offered that in a long time. So it will take time for the crowds to return on a regular basis. At least imo.

Yup. It will take some time(and W's) to get a decent fan base started here. I think Jeff knows this.

Agreed. I wasn't at any of the CU games during Chauncey's years, but when I was in school (00-04), we had some really good years. My junior year, we went to the Tourney, and attendance during conference play was pretty solid. I think their success during Maui helped the attendance thus far, not the horrible football season.

Here are the programs from the Big 12 that made the list:

#100 was St. John's with 5,418. If we keep winning, I believe there's a good chance we can crack the Top 100 this season and really start building something at CU. Sustained success and an AD that knows how to market will get us there. I truly believe that.

CU's 2009 attendance average was 4,262 per game as of February 5, 2009 Rocky Mountain News. From the same link, the best CU has ever done for home attendance was in 1996-97 when we averaged 7,932 for conference games. Capacity at the CEC is 11,064.
 
I have supported the basketball team for the same amount of time I supported the football team. I want CU to dominate in everything
 
only the basketball team winning will help the basketball team. The team put another 1500 in the seats after their showing in Maui. If they can go on a roll, it isn't crazy for us to have around 7k at every game.
 
If CU can get 7k in the seats on a regular basis I think that they will feed on that and give a good show keeping the 7k coming back. From what I have seen this team is not a contender for the conference but is entertaining and will compete in most games. They have the discipline that Buzz has been working on since he got here added to a more athletic squad that will play at a quicker pace when the opportunity presents itself.

Nothing brings people back like a good time and some wins, they are doing a better job with both.
 
The more they win, the more people will go, and the more people who go, the more people who will go on top of that. Hopefully it turns into a snowball effect.

Hopefully. I know I like going more when there are more people in CEC. That said, I've got season tickets for this year and it's been fun going to games so far. Looking forward to seeing how this team improves over the season and looking forward to more people packing CEC as the season goes along :thumbsup:
