Kicker???

A few months ago it was threads about how we were wasting scholarships by having so many kickers/punters on full rides. :rolleyes:

If they really believe in Grossnickle as a dual guy (punt & placekick), then it's not necessary to add anyone except a walk on or two this recruiting cycle. It's preferable to bring someone in, I guess, but it's not imperative imho.
 
I still would like to see a kicker in this class. I think leaving the future of punting and placekicking on the foot of one player is always a big gamble not worth taking.

If they do see Grossnickle in that role (do not know if this is the case), then it needs to start in Spring ball.

I think that anyone who thinks that we shouldn't use another scholarship for this position because it's a waste is simply wrong. Goodman had this season to make us forget about his performance in 2008, and it didn't happen. Grossnickle, as a dual guy is a big gamble, but during this great Hawk experiment, nothing surprises me. It would just be good to create some competition, as we could have easily picked-up a few games with a solid kicker.
 
There were a couple of decent kids who were at the CU kicking camp in June '09 who are typical "under the radar" kickers. I have been wondering if maybe they are expecting a couple walkons and that's why after Kip Smith said "no, thanks" they didn't offer Ronnie Doherty or Christian Kauffman (18 for 19 field goals for his senior season.) Or Nolan Kohorst, who came to some CU practices.

One of the kickers at that camp was named Clay Hawkins (no relation to current coaches or players, so don't get started), out of Glenwood Springs. He plays quite a few sports (including golf, soccer and football simultaneously in the fall season, believe it or not), but maybe he's interested in attending CU and kicking.

I didn't create a recruit profile on allbuffs, because there is no information on him in any databases, being a 3A kicker out of Glenwood, and the only glimmer of interest is that he attended CU's kicking camp -- but don't read too much into that, as there are so few kicking camps that roll through Colorado, most kickers attend all of them regardless of which campus they are held on. Hawkins is pretty good: Glenwood Springs won the state 3A championship in football when Clay was a junior (last year.) Most kids who plan to kick in high school get to as many summer camps as they can just to get in shape and get their technique polished, since it's unlikely they'll have any kicking coach at their school.

Seriously, the coaches must have SOME kind of plan for K/Ps, right? With even our walk-on Aweida now off the team, and no Darrell Scott at punter, the depth chart is looking really sketchy.
 
Seems like they must have some plan as AJ says. But ****, it doesn't seem like we have recruits beating down the door this year, why not offer a kid like Doherty?
 
Kickers are so frigging flakey that coaches would almost rather gamble and take walk ons. If they end up proving themselves, then they get a scholly.

You might call it the "Aric Goodman Strategy" and we all know how that has worked out.
 
that's the strategy employed in many places though. Mizzou is on their 2nd in a row walk-on kicker that is very good. Having a Sr and a FR on scholarship is already heavy by comparisons, unless Grossnickle is slated to punt and not really kick. If that's the case, we need one asap.

I'd be fine with that if we were signing full classes each recruiting cycle, but we're not. Every year Hawk seems to undersign so why not dangle a scholly out there to some of the top kickers around who would otherwise have to walkon somewhere and hope to be awarded a scholarship down the line.

This seems to be one area where undersigning would actually help us, if many programs are going the walkon-to-scholarship route for kickers.
 
Whether Goodman kicks FGs and KOs this year or shares duties with someone else, he is a senior and graduates after this season, as does Marcus Kirkwood, the remaining walkon.
That leaves us with one guy doing all the kicking and punting in 2011 - or one guy plus a freshly-minted freshman buff.

So for backup this year, and for seasoning, it makes sense to get someone in here this cycle. I'm still betting it's Jed Barnett. Has all the signs pointing that way even though I'd never heard of him before yesterday.
