Rivals is reporting that Griffon will be visiting next weekend (January 15th). The coaching change at Memphis made him want to look around. We're probably in very good shape on this one.

Here's his player page (with video) from his high school: http://www.gobluedarters.com/apopka-highschool-football-roster/18.php

Here's part of the Scout evaluation they did after he committed to Memphis:

What to Like: Henley Griffin is a big pass-catching threat playing in an Apopka offense that loves to run the football. They only throw it about seven times a game on average so it's hard for him to really get involved in the passing game. Griffin has ideal size at 6-5 and over 200 pounds. He runs around really well and looks like a natural pass-catcher when the ball's thrown his direction. He has hands and knows how to go and get the football when it's in the air. When utilized in the passing game, Griffin makes things happen.

Can you explain to me how a 6-5, 230# TE with a 4.4 40 is not ranked? I don't know much about recruiting but I don't understand how a kid with those basic stats could fly under the radar. I'm probably missing something.

Here's hoping we get him. TE is a need this year.

 you got in first

Sorry about the confusion on the 40 time. He's not a 4.4 guy. He's got average TE speed (probably around 4.8). He went under the radar because his HS didn't throw much, there wasn't a lot of film, he didn't make the camp circuit, and he looks real skinny in the film and photos that are available. I'd expect him to redshirt and potentially develop into a fantastic player as he fills out that frame of his.

I definitely wasn't disparaging your reporting. I really appreciate you taking the time you do to bring these guys to our attention. Average TE speed with that frame still sounds pretty good. Based on his size and that description, he sounds similar to Daniel Graham. It'd be really nice to have a TE like him in the system again.

Thanks Buffnik.

I am glad we have three TEs in the fold now, but one of those commits needed to be a JUCO. Odd recruiting numbers.

Welcome to the BnG, Mr. Griffon! You and thornton along with the other prospects make for very tall athletic targets for our young QBs.

with a run first team, he has to be a good blocker...very important point for a TE that is often overlooked...nice pick up, and welcome to the BUFF family...GO BUFFS!!!!!

Hee's the Rivals commitment article:

Apopka (Fla.) High head coach Rick Darlington said he has never coached a player that catches the ball as well as Henley Griffon.

But because Apopka features a run-oriented offense, Griffon did not draw much recruiting interest from colleges until late during his senior season.

Tight ends coach Kent Riddle was responsible for his recruitment from the Buffaloes' staff.

"Colorado knows I am a good all-around tight end and they know I am a good kid that is not going to get into trouble," Griffon said. "I am a good fit for Colorado and Colorado is a good fit for me."

We've got some more video too (mostly of Henley blocking):

Also, Apopka is a football powerhouse. Henley probably needs some time to develop, but he won't be intimidated and he'll be accustomed to big boy football. They're a 6a program that wins its District just about every year and has a FL state championship this decade. It's where Warren Sapp went to high school.

It's strange to think that a kid from a powerhouse program didn't have the support from his coaching staff needed to get his videos, get him into camps, etc.... Unfortunate for him, great for us. I love to see us land some talent from Florida and the South in general. He's in for a major culture shock, but here's hoping for 4 (most likely 5) great years. Welcome!

Looking at his offer list, I wonder why people are getting so excited about this commit? Perhaps I am missing something? Enlighten me.

Who was the lead recruiter here that got a foot (more like a pinky toe) in the door to Florida? Gotta keep that up!

He is suppose to be a lot better than his list of offers. He comes from a foootball powerhouse that is primeraly a running team so he did not get a lot of play called that would benefit him other than to show off his blocking skills. He looks to be pretty good blocker and receiver in his highlight film.

Riddle. Whatever we may think about his special teams the past few years, the guy is a very good recruiter.

There is a lot of talent out there in FL and we rarely land a commit from that state. While it shouldn't be a pipeline--although if it became one all the better--there is enough talent in the state to support UF, FSU, USF, Miami (4 BCS teams), FAU, FIU and UCF (3 more D1 schools). This is a state where we are not going to go and steal top recruits from any of those teams, unless the kid moved there his senior year (think Chris Martin) from CO. Getting a kid from a powerhouse team in Florida is good for the program even if he only ever becomes a ST player.

There are players that will get by those teams for whatever reason (they aren't fast enough, will need to RS and take time to develop, etc...), but that doesn't mean they are bad players. We need to make inroads to the south (LA would be awesome to get "back") as there is a LOT of talent there.

Think about this. Troy University (in Alabama) started playing D1 football in 2001. That freaking year they beat Miss St AT Miss St. In '04 they joined the Sun Belt. By '04 they made their first bowl game. In '06 they won their conference. In 2004 they beat #17 Mizzou. In '07 they beat Oklahoma St. While they are the whipping boy of a lot of really good teams, these teams cannot be complacent and must beat them down and take it seriously.

Also, the guys that have played for Troy include: DeMarcus Ware, Osi Umenyiora, Leodis McKelvin, Sherrod Martin, Lawrence Tynes, and Elbert Mack. There is a LOT of talent in the South. A LOT. I bet Syko would love to get some raw DL from the South; I know I would.

Does the Henley signing mean Darden most likely stays at WR? Any thoughts.

I like that we have three athletic TE's in this class plus Thornton as another underclassmen. Deehan and Thornton will have to carry us this year, but guys like Griffon, Favors, and Slavin give me hope that we'll return to being stacked at the position.

Glad to have you aboard Henley!

One of these 3 freshmen will play this year. If I was going to bet today, I'd say Favors. I'd also bet that we grant Walters a scholarship so we'll have him Deehan and Favors as our TE rotation.
