this article is brutal... i wonder if hagan is in the sauce now...

At some point the guys who have seen success at this level have to tire of watching the flailing around without success. I doubt Hagan is ready to be a HC, but at least he has seen one who knows how to win at this level, and he can probably spot the ones who haven't a clue. Ditto Cabral. Maybe we should start an over/under on the days until implosion. I've never been so down on where the Buffs are. Somewhere deep down inside I still have some hope that DH hasn't yet killed.....

I still had hope at the end of last year. But, with no changes in coaching or philosophy I imagine we will get what we have been getting. I cant believe there havent been changes, esp O-line and special teams. Hawk deserves to be fired.

WAC version offense part V, coming up....

I was pretty surprised to see the disagreement so publicly aired.

Hawkins is on a sinking ship, and I don't blame Hagan, Cabral, etc. if they don't intend to go down with it.

quotes from Kiesau and D. Johnson are sort of nonsensical. i like how Kiesau bashes the previous springs which were, at the time, the "best we've ever had". and wtf? about trying to beat their own crazy D? what a mess.

"I think from an offensive perspective, I`m going to say this really lightly, this is the first time in five years we`re having a spring practice where we`re getting something out of it, a true benefit. Meaning, we ran some crazy defenses and did some crazy stuff that we never saw, so we always spent time preparing to beat our defense, and who cares if we beat our defense? This has been unbelievable. Best spring-slash-fall camp we have had because of what both sides of the ball are doing, and we`re getting quality stuff. This is stuff we`ll see every week in the Big 12. It`s why I`m so fired up about it. I think it`s why the kids are fired up cause they know it."

You guys missed this!!! This is the best Spring Practice EVAR!!!!!! :woot:

No real way to paint that article in anything but a "concerning" or "scary" light as what gets reported is only the tip of the iceberg if there is truly dissension among the coaching staff.

The question that immediately popped into my head about the practices ignoring the running game and not running 9-on-7's...

"How is our defense supposed to get reps trying to stop the run?"

It is all well and good to "play to your strengths" on offense, but it is important to not be one-dimensional and also to give both sides of the ball the proper practice.

I know the Big 12 is known as a "pass happy" league, but there are still a good number of great running teams on our schedule, most notably our chief Big 12 rival.

One thing is for sure, this is the make or break year for the staff so they better be right about their implementation. Whether you are an optimistic or a pessimist about this season; that is just being a realist.

Nobody in the WAC worries about stopping the run, why would you expect our HC or DC to worry about it? CU is a WAC team now, we're just going to outscore everybody, unless they are on par with Toledo......

Sorry guys, but I don't think the aticle was "brutal." You guys are a bunch of drama queens! :smile2:

This is the worst media day for Hagan since Darrell Scott's announcement to quit the team. My heart goes out to B-Lock and Speedy.

We've now reached the part in this saga where the HC is not making himself available to the media and there is a public airing of dirty laundary amongst the offensive coaches.

Somewhere Summler is shaking his head.

Another WTF moment from Hagan. If this guy wasn't a buff legend, people would be calling for his head.

aw, i think there may be more to it than that.

for one thing, i think hagan's willingness to speak out like that demonstrates the lameduck status of the staff. if hagan thought hawkins was going to be here for the next 10 years, i really doubt he'd have said anything.

also, i think hagan, because he is a CU legend, may feel that he is somewhat immune from being fired by hawkins right now. i am not sure if that would be an accurate reading, but it would cause a ****storm of epic proportions if hawk fired hagan now.

i dunno... i would say that it is generally ill-advised for an assistant to speak out like that, but we are in such desperate straits that maybe it just doesn't matter. maybe it really is a "throw-away" season we are headed into... i dunno...

Adding to that...many buff fans want to see a down-hill smash mouth running game serve as the foundation for the offense. Hagan's vision for what he wants out of the offense is a lot more clear than any of the other coaches.

IMO there is a lot of truth to what you say...I think Hagan feels like his future is in the air anyway, why not speak his mind on what he sees....and probably doesn't like. If they keep Hawk, he probably isn't warm and fuzzy enough for DH to keep, but more likely, DH will leave and Hagan knows a new coach may not keep him, or least will be less likely to keep Hagan if he thinks he was down with the Sta-Puft marshmallow soft approach to FB.

I don't dispute those points, I just think that he hasn't done much as a RB coach, has a penchant for spouting off to the media at inopportune times, and has driven off some good players. If he wasn't a Buff legend, he'd be toast.

Perhaps Hagan should not have driven our downhill/smashmouth type backs out of Boulder.

I'm not convinced this can be pinned 100% on Hagan. There is a Josh Smith factor and turnover at the OC, OL and WR staff.

You would want to have seen Hagan's coaching legacy be the creation of 1,000 per season rushers, which it hasn't been. But he hasn't exactly been in a position to succeed, either.

It only reinforces what I have been saying for a couple months now: we are going to pass the ball a LOT next season. This coaching staff has interest in being a running team. Experienced QBs is only a strength if the experienced QBs have shown the ability to make good decisions on a consistent basis, something neither Cody nor Tyler have done IMO. Also, they are essentially banking on the OL making a big improvement in pass protection. Good luck with that.

soft. the team plays soft. this is a coaching issue.

9 v 7 instills toughness. there are other ways as well. the o-line is plenty big and athletic enough and there are more than enough quality bodies to provide some fierce competition for spots on that line, but they do not appear to play nasty. gurode and rogers would have punk-slapped some of these guys and made them run to hawkins for some tea and sympathy. could you imagine what brayton would have done to them in drills? and that's just going back to some gb guys...

DS? DS was not a good player. He was a decent back and it seems to me a head case afraid of injury.

Yep. Hagan somehow managed to get through that whole interview without using the word "soft", but there was no question what he was saying. I'm not all that sold on DH as a coach, but one thing that can't be questioned is the fact that he spent 4 years with a coach who knew how to make a team tough enough to win...

Well yeah. Our downhill backs, Sumler and Scott both took off along with a promising fullback in cobra kai. What I'm saying is that I don't see any evidence that Hagan has been a good RB coach, he's driven off guys that we need (or failed to keep them), and he spouts off to the media in a manner that disrupts the stability of the team.
