The new recruiting strategy

Now that we are officially jumping to the Pac-10, I hope the haphazard recruiting map that has been employed by the current coaching staff will be phased out. Some of the new strategy will depend on whether the Texas schools come with us, but here is how I hope the new recruiting map looks:

1. California-The bread and butter of our recruiting should be Cali, especially with USC's looming probation.
1a. Colorado-We have to keep the top players home, especially since several Pac-10 schools like ASU and Stanford have made some headway here.
2. Arizona-A state that does not have a ton of in-state loyalty (maybe worse than Colorado), but consistently produces great players. Most of the top players end up at Pac-10 schools.
3. Hawaii-No reason we cannot continue to target this state, especially since most of our competition will be conference foes.
4. Nevada-We need to hit the Las Vegas area hard. We have made some headway recently, but we need to do more here.

Somewhere in there mix in Texas (even if those schools do not come with us). We can nab some good players out of there with some effort.

We seem to be adding a couple from Ohio, and are developing an in road to New Jersey as well. All good things!!

Talent from any god damn place on earth should be the strategy. Try Quebec in Canada the sport has become blistering hot at grass roots level up to 17 year olds. The Buffs need some of those hog molly maple syrup eating mofos for both sides of the line!

While I agree with 1-3, CU is in a unique position (within the PAC10) to recruit outside of traditional Pac 10 country more easily than the existing west coast teams (excl USC).

I'm reserving comment until we know who is coming with us to the Pac.

I certainly feel that we're in a stronger position today in California, Colorado (losing lots of kids to the Pac 10 in recent years), Arizona, Hawaii, and the rest of the west. Also think this probably helps us in Big 10 country a bit since the opportunity to play in the Rose Bowl is very meaningful in that region.

The big question is what happens to us in Texas. If Texas comes to the Pac, CU leapfrogs some Big 12 North programs that have been killing us down there (MU, KU, KSU) for sure. If the dream scenario happens and UT comes by itself as CU's paired rival in a Pac 12, then CU will be able to compete with anyone for Texas prospects. On the other hand, maybe Texas doesn't come to the Pac X and we lose our direct connection to that state. That would hurt us quite a bit.

Let's see what happens. I think we've got a strong net positive already. But this could turn into the type of recruiting windfall that quickly makes CU a national power again in football while also taking other sports to new heights.

If we can get Texas and Cali recruiting going, we are going to have a damn good program once we get a real coach in here. I am not saying we are going to be in the running every year, but we should have a program similar to Oregon 8+ wins every season, flirt with being undefeated once every 10-15 or so.

This is the problem right now. We go to places like the Carolinas for no reason. We need to focus on certain areas instead of casting the widest net possible.

I like the optimism but this administration has not shown it knows how to run with the big dogs. I am hoping that the fact that we almost became part of the mwc will scare them enough to see that football is the meal ticket and we better start putting money into it. And we need some legislation changes to allow assistant coaches to get long term contracts.

Can anyone lay out how this might effect recruiting THIS year?

Until we know who is in our conference, the answer is "No, we really can't. We'd just be throwing **** against the wall and hoping it sticks." But it's not like that's ever stopped us before, so let us know if you want us to give it a go.

Give it ago... how about some scenarios. I assume that there is going to be fertile ground for recruit poaching depending on who is in and who is out (KU, Mizzou, USC). Also, you figure that the Buffs have to capitalize on the excitement of being apart of something 'new'...

But that all has to be weighed against our miserable seasons the last few years, and the uncertainty of Coach Hawk's long-term tenure at CU.....

We'll use that strategy if we someday get a hockey team.

When we have a new coaching staff in late November/early December, we should be able to capitalize on several things:

1. The general excitement surrounding a new coaching staff. There is usually a pronounced uptick in recruiting as a general rule.
2. The new conference. We have always competed regularly against Pac-10 schools in recruiting and it has hurt us that we have been an outlier in these recruiting battles.
3. Hopefully a more concise recruiting strategy. Major schools like Florida or USC can recruit nationally, it makes much less sense for us to do so. We need to map out the western United States and Texas (maybe Florida too just because of the sheer number of players) and go after players in those areas.
4. The looming USC probation. They will lose some scholarships, which should have a trickle down effect to everyone else in the Pac-10, new and old.

This will be a relatively small class regardless, so we have almost caught a break that we are most likely looking at it as a transition class to a new staff. We can get some players at key positions and really lay the groundwork for the all-important 2012 class, when we will be working to replace a large junior class. We can work on building new relationships at new high schools or enhancing existing relationships.
