CU Offense...

Article this morning in the post on the offense and it shows it has been offensive.

CU Offense under Hawkins.

I knew the offense had been no great shakes but did know really know that it was this bad. Ranked 92nd or worse in nation 3 out of the 4 years. 10th or 12th every year in the Big 12.

Obviously this has to improve but I still don't see this as a 40 point a game offense.

Although Simas came on strong last fall with six or more catches in each of the last four games, his production will be replaced by two major-college transfers — junior Toney Clemons (Michigan) and senior Travon Patterson (Southern Cal). Coaches believe they are at least equal in talent to Simas and will be more dependable.
If Clemons and Patterson aren't the fastest players on the team, senior wideout Scotty McKnight doesn't know who would beat them..."Having Travon and Toney on each side of me, that's going to make my job so much easier," said McKnight, who needs three receptions to become CU's all-time career leader in that category. "Teams that have two safeties, they're going to have to get off the hash marks because those guys will run right by them."

This is the best part of the article. This gives me hope they will actually play the players with talent. Not always the case with DH.

Maybe padding the offensive stats is the reason that Hawk goes for it on 4th down, instead of playing for field position?

I really hope I'm wrong, but 4 years of sub par production on the offensive side of the ball is a tough trend to buck, especially when there are not so many new pieces to the puzzle.....

Not true.
1. Offensive coordinator has been a huge issue. Kiesau started to look like one by game 6. Kiesau settled into an offensive identity. Helfrich never did.
2. No one will play the offensive line this year as a freshmen. In fact, no one has a chance to start that hasn't been here awhile or is a JR in college.
3. Last year we had one WR at the start of the season with a college catch. This year, we have lots of experience including two fast guys (Clemons, Patterson)
4. Experience everywhere on offense. Only TE and RB depth is a concern, but there's returning contributors there, just not the experience in our depth.
5. O-Line coach. Having a guy on hand more than a few months should help a lot.
6. Every offensive linemen is a year older. There's about 9 guys with significant experience now. That breeds competition.
7. experience in general. The only major contributors we lost were Sumler, Geer and Simas. We replace Simas with two experienced WRs. We will have some young guys at RB and TE, but I expect there will be adequate talent to more than make up for those losses.

CU's offense should be much better.

This post has been approved by my shrink. man, you're better than Pristiq! Depressive episode = averted

Thanks....No sarcasm, no, really

22.3 points per game last season. That is just downright pathetic.

I would love to see 30 points a game. I agree with those who have said 40 points sounds a bit too far fetched to be possible.

But will it take 30 or even 40 points per game to win against some teams that lost some pretty talented defensive players? I think not. All of us know what hurt the Buffs FB team last year from getting into the end zone more than they did.

We simply have not had ANY playmakers at WR for the last four years. We've only sort-of had playmakers at RB (Speedy's been hurt a lot, Scott a bust, Charles was okay). We've had some talent at TE, but usually that position is the one you go to when you've got other weapons too. Hopefully, this year we will finally have somebody that can 1) get open, 2) make somebody miss and 3) outrun somebody. We haven't had that at WR since 2003.

#3: what happened last year when we hung our WR hopes on a guy who has never played a snap as a Buff? I hope Clemons and Patterson are all that and a bag of chips, but until somebody not named Scotty catches a pass in a game, I'm not going to say CU is improved at WR. BTW, love Scotty's game...

'holic is right on the money. I also will add that I expect Thornton to be huge. I just hope he's involved in the passing game. I don't think we made very good use of our TE's last year.

Holic lives in peter pan land and I think he just rented you an apartment.

Don't get me wrong DBT, I love huffing the ol' Gold as much as you do. I just don't understand why you expect so much from Thornton?

I think he could be a good player in the future, but I think it will take him a couple of years to realize his full potential. JMHO.

You're right - that point is a bit unproven. I was pretty vociferous last year during the Andre Simmons watch in August that we should expect a lot. Still, we are more experienced that last year by a lot at WR. Last year we had McKnight, a Juco with 1 year of experience at WR at any level (Simmons) and Simas (0 snaps of D1), and WillJeff a true freshmen. WillJeff and Clemons didn't have the summer.

This year we have McKnight, the same Juco with another year.
We have Clemons who has 2 years at Michigan, and 1 year redshirting in the Buff season including a spring.
We have Simmons who now has a season and a spring.
We have WillJeff who now has a season and a spring.
And we throw in Patterson who only has been at USC for 4 years and played in three seasons.
We throw in Darden, with a RS season and a spring/summer.
We throw in Celestine, who played here as a true freshman. (that was the problem of course - we have so lacked playmakers that any "body" with speed got PT. Celestine and Josh Smith are examples. Will Jeff also. I think this is my point. An incoming freshmen with speed wouldn't crack the lineup this year unless he was unreal. First time in a long time at WR.

I'll with-hold the "we are better" at WR position for now, (because you're right, we don't know if these guys can play or if the returning guys have improved) - but we are definitely a lot more experienced.

And I won't mention Cefalo because I know how much walk-ons piss everyone off. But that dude looked good in the spring game. I think he will spell Scotty quite a bit this year.

I'm an optimist. I've been hearing really good things about him for two years now. But, yeah, I've never actually seen him in action.

I have pretty high hopes for the offense this year. QB we finally have experience. RB we have two solid proven guys in Speedy and Lockridge, but we need a couple more to step up. WR we're not overly experienced, but at least we have a lot of talent. TE isn't overly deep, but I really like Deehan. OL is about as experienced as it can get, if there's failure here this year DJ should retire from football.

I have been to the past 4 spring games and our offense looked much better this year (the Hansen part). I know that is not saying much and means absolutely nothing once the games start, but at least it is something to be optimistic about. The whole key to our offense is the offensive line, we will go as far as they will take us, we have the size, we have the experience, now we just need to put it together.
