Positive reports, but let's stay grounded

I've seen 3 practices so far and I thought I'd post what you can tell so far and not tell. Some of the guys on the Rivals board are drowning in their own Kool-Ade spit up. As one of the half-full guys around here, I am optimistic, but very cautious. Here's what I've seen:


  • Some guys have moved up early into the 1's or 2's (Bahktiari, Terrell Smith) - but it's early.

  • Some much needed speed at WR. Celestine, Richardson, Patterson, Clemons are all guys we didn't see last fall.
  • Very competitive practices OL vs. DL and DB's vs. WR's.
  • Seems like we got way more leadership (Sipili, Jalil, Jimmy, Nate, Miller, the QBs, Scotty, Deehan, Stevens, other OLine guys, Cunningham, Herrod, Beatty...) Just a lot of veterans out there like no time in quite some time. They are playing pissed.

  • The O looks like they are well ahead of the last few falls as far as timing goes. They have guys with game experience thoughout the 1's and most of the 2's. Certainly most of the guys in those two groups were with us in Spring drills.
  • Grossnickel's best punts are huge compared to DiLallo. His worst ones are 5 net yarders. Looks much better than last Spring so far though.
  • Long snapping hasn't been a problem.
  • Some early looks at young guys looks very promising Uzo-Direbe, all of the TE's and RB's look like guys who will compete for PT sooner than later. The linemen - who knows? Not this year.
  • DL guys are going to be much better.
  • Hansen gets ALL the snaps with the 1's and Cody is with the 2's. They both get as many snaps as they can probably handle.
  • There is a lot of competition at WR. McKnight and Clemons are the only penciled in starters I'd guess. Jefferson is a year older. Celestine is showing things. Simmons is in there a lot. Cefalo is Scotty McKnight with a different number (this kid is for real). Canty is there. Darden has caught passes and is a very tall target, and has filled out well. There are options here and there will be guys sitting who would have played a lot the last 5 years.
What we can't tell is how good we are. We are playing ourselves! We have had pads on for one practice. We could be awful on both sides and we won't know it until we play someone else.

One of the things I like about this camp so far is there's a confidence and a chip-on-the-shoulder mentality. That's good. They've done nothing. They have a lot to prove. I'm optimistic, but not so optimistic that I want to blow smoke up their skirts and have them start reading these headlines. They need to stay pissed.

They need that edge. There's a lot of work to do between now and 9/4.

I'm pumpin' some optimism from what I've seen at Camp, but let's keep a perspective here. It's camp.

CSU stomped on our field last year. Don't ever forget.
 
It would be nice to beat the Lambs by 40+ this year. Run-up that score Hawk...

Love the update. I am pumped for this team. Everything you wrote sounds great except the Grossnickle thing. I sure hope he finds consistency.

Yes that, but I would really like to leave no doubt as to who the better team is just like in the old days. Dominate them in every category, make them suffer and want to surrender!

Great post buffaholic. Sounds really encouraging.

Thanks for keeping those of us that have not been able to get to a practice updated.
 
The best thing that I am hearing out of the practices is "competition". As many sites/fans/reports have noted there is a different tone to this year’s fall ball, and I would say that guys competing for spots is the key part. In the past several years there have been key positions were we needed player XXXX to step up because we didn’t have anyone else to compete for the position, or a true freshman/Juco transfer to come in and get up to speed. There was only one person to fill that position, and we need that person to learn and develop into a top BCS player fast. In past years if Givens were to have fallen behind in the race for RT, there would have been panic since the guy behind him may not have been nearly as talented. This year, Givens has to earn his spot on the line. There are 11 guys with game experience, and you have to compete and win in order to be on the field. Recently, if we lost a trio like Burton/Smart/Mohler we would have been looking for r-Fr or true freshmen to step in and play (while hoping they could live up to the hype that would be given to them like last years DL). This year we have an experienced senior and talented red shirt sophomore looking at filling those rolls. There are also talented scholarship guys in the 2/3 deep competing with them for playing time, forcing them to work to keep their spot. In past years losing a talent like Simas would have resulted in a drastic drop in talent and experience to replace him (i.e. Josh Smith for Jason Espinoza). This year we have Clemmons looking to fill the roll immediately, and there is Darden, Simmons, Patterson, Jefferson, and Celestine who are competing for playing time. If you add McKnight, Cefalo, and the freshman Richardson to the mix, there is a ton of talent to compete in the three deep for WR. The competition will force guys to work hard if they are going to get playing time. It also means if someone goes down or needs a rest; the guy going in will be pretty damn good.

This alone does not translate into wins, but it is a nice change. I am looking forward to a lot of nice changes this year.
 
Nice Job B!! I wanted to go yesterday and file a report but the job comes 1st. Hopefully tomorrow.
