Two schools of thought on this one.

One camp says that he should redshirt because Nick Hirschman as a 5th year senior does a lot more for our program than Nick Hirschman as a true freshman.

One camp says that he should split practice time along with Cody with the 2s this year, be the guy that comes in for garbage time situations even if Cody is the backup in case of injury to Hansen, and that this experience will have Nick Hirschman best prepared to push Hansen next year and be ready if Hansen gets injured.

What do you guys think we should do with Nick this year?

There is NO way he plays over cody this year. Hell, Hawk won't even admit Hansen is the starter over cody. I just hope he doesn't **** up his redshirt like he did TH's.

I hope for redshirt because I don't want it to be wasted.

I think you redshirt him if you can. I agree with snow in that there's no way in Hell that Hawkins puts Hirschman in before Cody. So unless there's a catastrophe and both Hansen and Cody are hurt, give Hirschman some extra time to develop. QB is a unique position. You don't interchange QBs in order to give one a breather. There's no QB rotation. The starter is the guy who plays pretty much the entire game. Giving Hirschman a couple game time snaps won't make much of a difference.

Redshirt. No way DH plays him in front of Cody. Heck Cody will probably see the field pretty often this year.

I know he has been on campus since January, but I almost universally think red shirting is the way to go. Adjusting to college life is difficult enough, let alone adding all the football duties on top. Give him some time to develop.

However, I understand your points Nik. Especially since we only have 3 quarterbacks. If Hansen goes down, we might be forced to play him.

IF, he could get legitimate reps with the twos AND legitimate PT, I'd play him so CU has a quality backup with game time experience next year if TH goes down. Now everybody knows those two things will never happen with Papa Hawk on the sidelines, so RS him I say.

This team needs a better 3rd option emergency QB than burning a probable future-starter's redshirt.

Redshirt him. No sense in using 2 years of eligibility as a backup in mop up duty, when you can potentially get 3 good years out of him as an older, smarter, more prepared player. Playing a dozen snaps in mop up time this year won't prepare him for anything.

My vote is for the R/S, but for a different reason. The schedule doesn't have NorthEastern Walamoo Southern State U, so he's not gonna get some late game blow-out mop up duty this year, imo. Let him take a year to get bigger, stronger, and more familiar with the playbook.

Maybe next year Hirsh can get in for a series or two each game, kinda like what Pickle did with boogereater at mizzery.

I think he is going to be a great Pac-12 QB so let him get all four years in the Pac.

I love these references to garbage time and mop up duty.

When the hell does that ever happen?

Excellent point. Last year, CU had garbage time v. Wyo, but CH stayed out there and kept pitching to get stats. Same thing when Toledo (I still can't believe it) had put CU away.

For what it's worth, we do have a 4th QB option. Justin Gorman, a (I think) freshman walk-on got a snap or two yesterday. I'm not saying he would be a viable option but he is there.

If the coaching situation were more stable, there might be an argument made for playing Hirschman this year if they feel that Berglund will be considerably better. If they want to give Berglund as much time as possible to play, then playing Hirschman now would be the best bet.

Kind of like how we all wish they hadn't redshirted Cody.

Given the fact that the (presumably) current backup QB is the coach's son, Hirschman likely wouldn't get more than a handful of plays anyway, therefore it's not worth it to burn a redshirt on him. Now if a season-ending injury were to occur to TH or Cody, that would obviously change things, and if at that point you're forced to burn Hirschman's redshirt, then go ahead and use him as much as possible to get the max worth out of burning his RS. Hopefully it won't come to that though.

I'm pretty mixed on this one. I say get him experience. He will be the back up next year. Do you really want a guy who has never played a down being one play away from being the starter? Also, do you want to create a "road block" for future QB recruits. It seems like that has been a problem for us. Even is he never red shirts, he stands to be the starter his junior and senior year. Say we recruit a big time QB this year. He would know that he could RS his first year, Hirschman's sophomore year, be a RS freshman NH's junior year and be a soph during NH's senior year. He'd be in line to be the starter his junior year. And that is what you want. You want an experienced guy ready to be the starter his junior year. So, I say you play NH any chance you can this year. I guess I'm the only one.

BTW, I either read or heard Hawkins say that he would try to play Hirschman THIS year. One other thing that just occurred to me: It is not a bad idea at all to have a RS year "in the bank." You never know when you may need to use it.

I actually think getting Hirschman practice time with the 2s this year instead of just playing scout team is at least as important as game experience. But it's so hard to prepare 2 QBs for gameday as it is. Trying to prepare 3 may be asking too much. One thing that may make that possible is Cody's understanding of the offense. He may not need a lot of reps in order to be ready to play if he is needed.

P.S. I still haven't voted because I'm completely torn on this one. I assume that the redshirt option is way ahead, no?

Cheater!

Back to my argument for burning his RS this year. Berglund is coming in, for one, next year. You need some separation between him and any other recruit you might bring in and Hirschman. If things go according to Hoyle, Berglund will RS next year while Hansen starts and Hirschman is the back up. Then, in 2012, Hirschman will be the starter as a junior and Berglund will be the backup as a RS freshman. In 2013, Hirschman would be a senior starter, Berglund a soph back up who would project to be a starter as a junior. But things never go according to Hoyle.

I think it's hard to look more than a year ahead since, as you said, things never go according to plan.

But from a depth chart perspective it certainly makes sense to have 2 years between Hansen and Hirschman instead of 3. And it would bunch Hirschman, Berglund and Sherry together a lot more if Hirschman redshirts. That would make it hard to recruit a QB in the 2012 class unless he was a JUCO who thought he could come in and beat out 3 underclassmen.

I don't think I have a problem with the coaches going either direction, but I'm leaning toward wanting Hirschman to enter the spring with some game snaps and game prep under his belt. It's just such a huge risk to have our only backups being 2 true freshmen and a RS-Freshman who ran the only ran the opponents offenses on scout team the previous fall. I'm voting to play him.

Play him as much as possible in blowouts either way. I've said it before and say it again, Cody is not the answer. Worst case scenario is Hansen doesn't get it done (and I think he will) then get Hirschman the experience with an eye out down the road. If TH falters we're not going to a bowl anyway so play the freshman. What has anyone seen of Cody in the last two years that makes you think he'll get it done? Not bashing him at all. Just my vision of reality. We need our backup next year to have some playing time.

I voted for R/S. If Tyler were a senior this year, then yeah, get Hirsch some PT. But with Tyler back for his senior season next year, I think it is wise to R/S him unless a dire emergency arises and they REALLY need him to play.

Our qb situation is like "Preparation H". There to provide some relief but won't solve the problem.

Hansen to start. He is an upgrade physically over Cody. Much like a Camry is an upgrade over a Corolla. You won't find either at the track or mistake either for a Porsche.

Hawkins is the coaches son (wouldn't be here otherwise). Will be in the games to help pad his stats as passing TD leader.

Hirschman, why come here if your really good. He is average size and makes Cody look athletic, quick and speedy (do you suppose that's why he's here).

A new coach next year will be bringing in his own style guys next year and Hansen may survive as starter as a result. Hirschman will probably not.

Hirschman has been money in everything I have seen him in. Where are you getting all these negatives about Hirschman? The kid choose to go to CU because it is his dream school.
