From Rivals:

What are you most concerned about?

"The unknown; you just don't know. There are certain things you go into a certain game and you are always afraid of the unknown. You are always trying to figure out all the little details you need to get ready for the first game and hopefully you go into it and there are no surprises. But the fear of the unknown right now is big for us."

:wtf:

I'm afraid of the rumor that he wasn't running the defense last season post Toledo. That's what I'm going into the first game afraid of.

There was also this gem:

Were there some players that surprised you, in a good way, during camp?

"No. I think everybody progressed pretty much how we thought they would."

Damn. This guy has everything figured out.

That was the quote that especially annoyed me. Mostly because Adam tossed him a softball to give him an opportunity to praise some of the guys who really made big strides this fall... and RC didn't even take a swing.

For the record, I am not a fan of Collins. I believe his defenses were mediocre at Boise State and the biggest reason for them taking the next step as a program was the departure of Collins. I have seen some good efforts at CU, but I've also seen some inexplicable performances. Last season, I believe that 0-2 start can be 90% hung on Collins. He had a bunch of new starters and his plan resulted in over-complicating things against 2 lesser opponents. He should have been simplifying and letting our talent win the day. Proving my point, we ran a much less complex scheme against Texas than we did against CSU and we pretty much shut the Longhorns down.

I loudly called for Collins to be fired after those first 2 weeks. I believed then and I believe now that we would have been a better team last season and would be a better team this season if Greg Brown was our Defensive Coordinator. I wanted Collins gone and I wanted that change made more than I wanted Hawkins gone. And to give you an idea of how I felt about the job Hawkins was doing, in the heat of the moment I posted several time that we could get rid of Hawkins and put a cup of warm piss on his desk instead... and it would be an upgrade.

All that said, Hawkins was retained and Collins was retained. I'm a Buff fan and so these coaches have my support this season until they prove once again that they don't deserve it. I'm hoping every day with everything I've got that I was wrong about both of them. But I've got more confidence in Hawkins than Collins.

i sure would like to see our coaches just bang out some conventional coach speak instead of perambulating around their little theories: keep your powder dry.

"what do you fear?": CSU is the in-state rivalry game, they are a team that is gonna play with a lot of heart.....and if we don't match or exceed their intensity, they'll take it to us like they did last year on our home field. it's my job as a coach to get my guys there.

end of question.

Careful now. Some around here will accuse you of telling them how to think and questioning their fanhood.

Me too. I'm sitting there thinking, really Ron? There is not at least one guy you can pinpoint out of the entire defensive side that has surprised you? Hawkins annoys me most of the time, but at least he will throw some names out every now and then.

I mostly agree on Collins. The slow starts last season were a really poor reflection on him IMO. Far too many teams caught us off guard and we looked lost for quarters at a time. The CSU, Toledo, and Mizzou games stand out in particular.

Wow, I dont know what else to say? Besides the football guru, who is Ron Collins, who has surprised you guys? I havent seen any practices so I only have articles to go by but Ive been pretty excited to hear about Terrel Smith, Ahles, shewent2jared aka icecreamman lol, etc.

Great question.

Justin Torres has surprised me. I thought he'd be moved to linebacker and he ends up above the other freshman RBs on the depth chart. He'll play a lot this year.

Paul Richardson has surprised me. I was impressed with him as a prospect, but I didn't expect him to be a co-starter after only being here a few weeks.

Terrel Smith has surprised me. No way did I think an undersized, unheralded prospect would blow up like this. It's Jordan Dizon part deux so far.

Chidera Uzo-Diribe has surprised me. I was hoping the lightbulb would go on and that he might get in the rotation next year. It's looking like he'll be a pass rushing specialist as a true freshman.

Jered Bell has surprised me. I had him pegged as a guy with good measurable who was a bit of a project. It's going to be hard to redshirt him.

Dang it. I was hoping for a fresh start in 2011, going into a new conference with a fresh set of new coaches (Cabral should always be kept) to begin a new set of record books in the 12-PAC. Now, we may be stuck in the old lame duck conference with the same old lame duck coaches. SSDD.

My bad for not mentioning the offense guys too. El Toro is a pleasant surprise so far as well as the other guys you mentioned. I hope these guys can play right away and give themselves and everybody a good season.

These boise boys make me puke. The complete cluelessness from these guys is mind boggling.
