Cal Pre-Game Options

Thanks for posting that. The advice is great.

I'm still not sure what we (me + 26 others) will be doing. We probably would have gone to the alumni party, but since it's sold out I guess we'll get more bang for our $30.

Closest bars to the stadium are Henry's and Kip's. Both are on Durant. Kip's is more of a college bar (with a downstairs Chinese/pizza restaurant) while Henry's is a little bit of an older crowd. Kip's usually has the morning games on with a decent atmosphere. Also highly recommend eating on Durant pre-game. House of Curries (Indian), Top Dog (self explanatory, Berkeley institution), Gypsys (Italian), Steve's Korean BBQ, and D.R's (Middle Eastern) are all excellent and cheap. If the Hill had anything like that I probably never would have left Boulder.

It used to. You can thank the university hill association for the death of the hill. **** those guys.

Does Steve's Korean BBQ get their dog from Top Dog?

As a public service, I called the Cal ticket office to see if they offer single game parking passes. They don't. The tailgating options are basically non-existant.

Save a slice of Kung-pow pepperoni for me!

We're driving in from Napa. Any suggestions for where to park? We should arrive early (by 9 or so) if that makes life easier....

I'd just park at a BART station and take BART into Berkeley. Berkeley is a mess for driving on gamedays. Richmond is probably your best spot but it is a bit on the seedy side.

Since the stadium is right on campus, there isn't much parking. Plenty of people tailgate but it's either a little ways away, or it's at the bars people have mentioned (unless you're a big donor -- they you tailgate in the lots right next to the stadium). Plus the new training facility and stadium are under construction currently (next year we play our home games in AT&T Park in SF) which cuts down the parking even more.

Henry's is often a good option -- just down the hill from the stadium, and they open up the whole back parking lot and add a bunch of other bars, etc out back. Bear's Lair on Sproul Plaza (on Bancroft is also really fun).

On another note, obviously I'm a Cal fan -- excited to be playing you guys and to have you in the Pac-12 soon. Lots of friends who are alums of CU.

Let me know if I can be of any help for those of you coming out.

Wow, Cal fans are showing lots of class already. But nobody has classier fans than corn. Just ask corn fans. They'll tell you all about it.

Unless you're familiar with Berkeley driving in and parking near the stadium is a pain. Memorial is sandwiched between campus to the west, steep hills without access to the east, residential neighborhoods full of winding narrow roads to the north and a maze of one way / barricaded (to force traffic back on the main arteries) streets to the south. Coming in from Napa you could get off 80/580 and park at any of the stations north of campus and BART to the Downtown Berkeley. North Berkeley or either of the El Cerrito stations would work well. From there it's a $1 shuttle ride directly to the stadium or a 15-20 minute walk up through campus or past all the bars and restaurants on the southside. If you have to drive you can park in a private garage downtown (by the BART station) or pay ~$30-50 and park at a frat or house really close to the stadium. But then getting out after the game will suck. Arriving at 9am you could find legal street parking a bit further away but it helps to know the area.

Pre Party

Pre Party on BART baby.

Rolling 4 joints and brown bagging some Beam and ready to enjoy outside of the 24th and Mission BART station.

Umm.. If you're serious about that sort of thing, can I recommend El Rio near 24th or Zeitgeist near 16th? Just wait to put on your Buffs gear until you're in the snake hole...

SF Buff... Have you been to the kilowatt on an NFL sunday? It's my favorite place to watch nfl games in the city. You get lots of people into the games, but it's in the mission so you don't get the douche bag jersey crowd. Plus free hot dogs and cheap beers. It's close to noe valley and certainly better than anything you'd find out that way.

Another thing, have you been to skip's on cortland?

Definitely been to El Rio and Zeitgeist. I think at least one of those two spots are posibilities for post game action on Saturday depending on the weather. I prefer El Rio though. I just can't get past everybody being a complete asshole at Zeitgeist.

I've been to Kilowatt but never for NFL games, I'll check that out for sure.

One of the major problems in SF is trying to avoid the d bag crowd which is why I try to stay away from Union Street as much as possible. I'm pretty pissed that norcalbuffs decided to move back to the Brick Yard which is corporate as hell. I just can't get over the fact that I really miss the old Bayside so much compared to the new digs.

The only bar I've been to on Cortland is a lesbian bar with a great outdoor area, but I'll check out Skip's. Cortland is one of the most underrated spots in San Francisco for sure.

Yeah. I'm a bit bummed about the buffs bar always being in the Marina as well, but once the games get going there are enough buff fans there that I forget where I am. I guess it gives me a reason to get to that part of town at least.

Skip's is a great bar up on the top of the hill that has pretty good music (blues) after about 10pm on weekends. It's mostly filled with african americans, but I've only been harassed once for being white in there. I sometimes include it in my Friday plans if I'm going to the Speakeasy Brewery for their open house thingie as the 24 goes right up cortland and then takes me to my place near divis.

As for folks being assholes at zeitgiest, I always hear about that but have never experienced it. Perhaps I'm just not as receptive to it.

Diners Drive-Ins and Dives had LA gormet food trucks running around called 'Don-Chow's' and they do a fusion of Chinese and Mexican. Tamales with kung pow chicken inside, Chinese BBQ pork taces--- they looked great. Can't wait to try one when I go to a CU-UCLA game.

That sounds awesome.

My dream is to open a restaurant named McWops. It would be an Irish pub with Italian food. The best of both worlds!

Are you coming to the game this weekend? We have kung fu tacos in san francisco.

Also we have Indian burritos:

Boots on the ground report.

I'm scouting Jupiter. It's conveniently located at the Downtown Berkeley BART. This looks like it would be a great place to start gameday, if they were to decide to open at 9am. But the mgr told me they open at 11AM, which is as short sighted as it is stupid. Exit Bart. Cross Street. Grab a home crafted hefeweisen ($4.50) before hiking across the campus to the stadium. It's 25 min walk to the stadium.

I'll scout some more tomorrow and report on some more places.

Edit: Jupiter doesn't open until 11AM. ):

Sorry!

Reporting from Raleighs (on Telegraph).
Raleighs is a better sports bar than Jupiters. Lots of TV's to catch other games. Lots of beers on tap ($4.50 ea) More beers than Jupiters. Kinda cramped.

(The patio at Jupiters had more space better talent waiting tables.)

It's looking like a beer crawl on the way to the stadium is in order.

Must check out Bear's Lair b/4 night is over.

Bear's Lair. Closed!
It's on campus and in the same building as their student center.
Thumbs down.

Good morning from the summit of Tightwad Hill. The sky is blue over the bay. Football is in the air. I just did a walkthrough from the Downtown Berkeley Bart up to the football stadium. If you are arriving by Bart, please pay attention:

The walk from Bart to the stadium enterence is 25 minutes. It's all uphill through campus. The redwood canopy is unlike anything seen in B12 territory. If you have a gimpy knee or are staggering drunk, the walk will take longer.

My recommendation is to exit at the Downtown Berkeley well before 11:30 and head up to Telegraph. Warning - bad advice on Jupiter's. They don't open until 11AM! An hour before the game, you must head out or risk being late to your seats.

The stadium is primarily accessible from the south, so there is bound to be a huge bottleneck at the gates.

Go to Raleighs. Plan on heading to the stadium around 11:30-11:45, or risk being late.

The parking just isn't conducive to tail gating.

Note on the Bear's Lair: It's got a nice sized patio and will be grilling before the game. However, I suspect the capacity of that place is around 1,000 and beer lines could get long.

The stadium has a no bottles & cans policy, so finish up before going in.

And...it appears porta-johns will be serving as the main restroom facilities. There is a huge line of these on the east side of the stadium. Ladies might want to consider bringing some toilettes and hand sanitizer. You'll be glad you did.

Cheers and CU tomorrow!

Edit: Mgmt at Jupiter's said they don't open until 11AM. Not long enough for a good tailgate.

Call me crazy, but a Korean place run by a "Steve" doesn't inspire that much confidence in me.

If the Hill had anything like that I probably never would have left Boulder.

Beautiful day in San Francisco. The sun is already out and should be out all day long.

Hopefully will see tons of Buff fans in the city.

Beach Chalet at 1:30pm.

GO BUFFS!

Beautiful day indeed. I saw a few folks walking down Market on my way into work today. I didn't yell "Go Buffs" at them from the bus window though. :)

Flew into Sac on Weds night. Driving into Berkeley as soon as UPS delivers the throwback jersey I ordered. Can't wait. Go Buffs!
