Has Hawkins screwed Peterson out of a BCS job, too?

What AD is going to take a chance on a former Boise coach at this point? Both Koetter and Hawkins have proven to be catastrophic, program killing morons.

Nah. Someone will take the dive.

Who?

Think about it. Peterson isn't going to leave Boise for some middle of the road job at a place like Mississippi State or Indiana. He'll only want to go to an upper echelon school. The problem is that upper echelon schools have too much to lose with a bad hire, and they can all see what has happened with previous Boise coaches.

I think he's screwed. At least at the college level. Or if he's content to stay at Boise for the rest of his career.

nah. Gonzaga basketball, Boise St. football analogy

Koetter/Hawkins=Dan Monson (helped build a mid-major power.....took the big job and flopped at Minnesota, after which Tubby Smith started winning immediately...btw). Koetter, out at ASU. Hawk, stinks at CU.
Peterson=Mark Few

not sure Peterson will leave a la Few....but any number of AD's would write him a big big check to do so. among the many suitors Few has turned away, his alma mater UO and Phil Knights checkbook (and a new gym in Eugene).

You forgot about Houston Nutt, sacky. Something about Boise isn't translating to the big leagues. I think it's a very isolated place that wholeheartedly supports the team (students, fans, community, university, alumni). And they have been playing in a conference that has been the equivalent of a 4A program mixed in with 3A and 2A programs. It is exactly like how certain quarterbacks that light it up in college aren't capable of making it in the NFL and we call them "system QBs"... the Boise State head coaches are "system HCs". Petersen could be the exception and someone will definitely try throwing a lot of money at him. But I doubt it works out.

Edit: Was typing while Mick posted. The Gonzaga analogy is spot on.

I'm not so sure. I think the pool of potential schools that would consider Peterson just got a lot shallower. No doubt he'll be considered for a lot of jobs, but there's always going to be this creeping doubt in the back of every AD's mind. "Is this guy another Dan Hawkins?". A lot of people here want to fire Mike Bohn for hiring Dan Hawkins. What will happen to the guy who hires the "next" Dan Hawkins.

Food for thought. I know I'd be reluctant if I was at Texas A&M, or Auburn, or ASU, or Washington, etc.

It's pretty obvious that Petersen was the brains behind BSU while Hawk was there - I think he will certainly be given the chance at a BCS school, but whether or not he chooses to take it is another story entirely - to me he seems like the type that could voluntarily stay at Boise State for a long time...

This. My daughter is an athletic trainer at Boise and works with the football team quite a bit. She says he loves Boise and doesn't want to go anywhere-no matter who comes calling. They love the lifestyle there and like the schools their kids go to.

No disrespect, but what is he supposed to say? I'm sure he's going to look into anything that comes his way. He's in a good situation.

when CU hired Hawk, he was one of the hottest coaching prospects around, but yet, Boise boards were sort of happy that he was leaving. Yeah, a lot of people thought he was a traitor and felt betrayed, but I recall more than a few threads that were glad Peterson was taking over. They got tired of how Hawk couldn't win the big games, and how he always gave buddhist like excuses.

I think the year Peterson took over, Boise showed they were better coached - see OU Fiesta Bowl. Peterson has done wonders with the team, when the team was already on a high when he took it over. I think Peterson will take an upper-echelon job eventually, because Boise will not be able to put out the money that other schools can. He is a great coach - we got the wrong Boise St coaches (Hawk, Riddle, Collins, Bandison...).

You cited three examples in Monson, Koetter & Hawkins. I think those guys just represent the failures. For every failure, there is a success. Bill Self (Tulsa), Thad Matta (Butler & Xavier), Bruce Weber (SIU). Chip Kelly (New Hampshire), Brian Kelly (Central Michigan), Jim Tressel (Youngstown State).

It is just ironic that two of these guys came from Boise State. But there might be something to the "system HC" idea. Not many coaches emerged from the U of Houston's fun-and-gun system with Ware & Klingler, or all of Marshall's success back in the '90s.

i wasn't trying to be comprehensive or make an inclusive "anti-" argument about mid-major coaches. Obviously, there are many examples of guys who succeed...just noting similarities between BSU and Zaga as mid-major "darlings" of their respective sports. Of the coaches you list, with the exception of Xavier and Tulsa possibly....none of those schools/teams have achieved anywhere near the top level success in the way Boise and Gonzaga have. Or, even have access to it. Boise and Gonzaga have been pioneers in moving mid majors to the fore. So, i stick with my comparison in that regard.

SIU, C. Michigan, etc. were outright stepping stone schools for those coaches and remain at that mid-major, second tier conference level.....not Elite 8 teams or BCS Bowl winners. SIU is still SIU. CMU is still CMU.

I also think there is something different, unique in the way that Boise/Gonzaga are western programs vs. the longstanding and subordinate relationship that MAC type conference schools have with the Big Ten and have, for a long time, been feeders into the top tier Big Ten....but, it's too early to try and flesh it out. For instance, you have a lot of precedent for things like a move from SIU to Illinois, or Youngstown State to tOSU. Both Bo Schembechler and Woody Hayes coached at Miami (OH)...for instance, to list the "uber-examples". there's no precedent like that with Boise or Gonzaga. Tulsa was good with Nolan Richardson in the early 80's. the move to Arkansas was natural....200 miles away.

Jim Donnan turned the Marshall job into a gig at UGA, if i recall. wiki says JD was 40-19 at UGA (4-0 bowl record) before getting canned against the wishes of AD Vince Dooley. looking further, Donnan won 11 games or more at Marshall 5 of 6 years, 64-21 overall. 104-40-1 overall, with a D-AA National Championship and was the OC for OU's 85 MNC team. amazing that Donnan had to go to the TV set while our guy with nearly the inverted winning % as JD....is asking for an extension.

I worry more about what Dan Hawkins has done to Cody Hawkins's future coaching career.
