It seems like the 'powers that be' are starting a push to make us all buy 3D TVs and glasses and watch sports (and movies and, eventually, everything) in 3D.

I disliked it for several reasons, at the movies and the 1 TV demo I saw.

I'm hoping others tell them they don't like it either

Any thoughts on this?

I know that sports leagues are concerned about HD big screens and 3D. They are afraid it will hurt attendance. I've heard that a lot of people experience problems after watching too much 3D. Like virtigo or something. Has anyone else heard that?
 
there were some 3D glasses in the latest issue of maxim. i put them on and went into the bathroom. my wife was standing there combing her hair. she looked at me funny and said, "what are you doing?" "I thought you were in the shower.", i said. they didnt work.
 
I'm not a fan AT ALL. Didn't we already try this 3-D movie craze in the 80s? Didn't everyone hate it then?

Look, I'm all for progress in technology, but I think they know they jumped the shark with HD. WHAT MORE CAN BE DONE at this point? In my mind, the next step is another shot at 3D (current) or the Princess Leia/R2D2 hologram deal. But you know what? Neither of those two options appeal to me.

HD is great. It's amazing how clear and sharp everything is. And I think TV producers didn't realize just how good it was going to be; they've basically ended their own vocations because every "new" thing post-HD is just fluff. I guess what I'm saying is, there was a massive improvement from SD to HD. We'll likely never see that jump in improvement again. I think TV producers are now realizing this, hence the push for 3D -- hence, to keep sales going as one day the HD will saturate the market and people will stick with their TVs for awhile.

But back to 3D. The good news is the public is already rejecting it at the movies. I've read stories in Hollywood about how studios are already winding down 3D movie production because they're not happy with the sales. They've realized people don't want to spend extra for a gimmick and that people like regular big screens just fine, thank you. I think that mood is trickling to TVs. People don't see the reason for 3D because HD improved the experience so much most people see no point in taking another leap up.

I think we've seen this with the DVD/Blu-Ray transition. I think, eventually, Blu-Ray will be more of a standard, but people still really like basic DVDs. I know I do. And I think the transition there will really be from DVDs to hard drives. Even though I like having movies in my hand, the next wave is it all being on your XBOX or something.

Anyway, I don't plan on buying a 3DTV anytime soon, and I suspect many others won't, either. Wearing those glasses at home to watch TV would suck.
 
I tried looking at a 3-D TV at Best Buy and I was not sold at all...this is something that has FAIL written all over it.

I think you confused them with X-Ray glasses.

yeah but maybe the lobbyist will pressure the FCC to end HDTV broadcast and only broadcast in 3D, forcing us to get the new tv.
 
3D television will fail -

1) many people have the tv on while they are doing something else (cleaning, cooking)
People don't cook or clean in 3D.

2) 3D tv won't work when you have a Superbowl party or friends over for the 'big game'
 
I tried them at Best Buy too. It's a neat effect but the fluidity of the image during fast motion action (like watching the volleyball demo they had) is still clunky. Plus, my brain felt like it had to work overtime to resolve some to the spacial apperception. Overall it seemed like a fun effect to enjoy for a short period of time but I was certain I would have a 3D hangover if I did it for a long period of time and the visual experience was nowhere near as good as real life.

A friend has a 3D tv. I think she has watch part of a movie in 3D once, when it was brand new, but I have not heard mention of it since then. Also, watching regular movies on it is really weird. Makes everything look like a pron from 1977.
 
RealD in Boulder is a major force in this new technology and their Demo in their offices there kicks butt! Very impressive. I'm not sure what is out in stores to demo right now, but RealD is what is used in a lot of the movies and their goggles I tried at their labs in Boulder were outrageous. These are expensive and require a battery, unlike the passive filter glasses you get at the movies...
 
I think the big drawback to 3D for home is going to be the glasses. I don't mind putting on the glasses to watch the 3D Imax, but don't want to worry about keeping track of glasses at home to watch TV.
 
No way I am going to buy it. I finally completed the upgrade of my old TVs to HD flatscreens. I'm not spending $1,000 plus per TV and discarding them after a few years.

Plus 3D at the movies is more annoying than anything. If I find out the movie I want to see is only playing in 3D I walk away. It gives me a headache.

Hwever, the biggest thing is the glasses. I am not walking around the house with glasses on all the time. Rarely do I just sit there and watch an entire show without moving around, heading the kitchen, etc.

Yeah, its bad enough that I can't find the damned remote!
 
I used to have a Virtual Boy and then after I finished playing it, everything looked blurry...another reason why I don't think 3D will take off.
