TCU to Big East?

Brought to you by the people who designed the NFC "East", please welcome the state of Texas to the Big East....

I have to think that TCU stays in the MWC and helps them gain automatic qualification. The Big East is grasping at straws trying to maintain their AQ.

Will Texas promise them $20 million as well?

Actually the Big East makes no sense for them but with conferences grasping at straws for AQ status, conference championship games, and their piece of the money pie not much would truly surprise me now.

Makes about as much sense as being in the Mtn. West....

State of Texas considers themselves west, some of their other schools are in the WAC. The MWC is a pretty decent fit for TCU in a number of other ways such as academically, fan support, etc. The Big East is more associated with New England, Atlantic Seaboard, etc. Not a fit at all for TCU. That said if the money is right, who knows what they would do. I think that the conference shake-ups have just started. The Big Texas is completely unstable and will crumble as soon as either Texas or OU bails out. The Big East and the ACC are both going to have to make some moves to remain considered major conferences. Once things start happening the divide between the haves and the have nots is only going to get bigger, schools are going to be willing to do just about anything to be included in the haves.

TCU is a unique player in this situation because they are a good team on the field and are in a football crazy state. At the same time they are not really a major player for fan interest in their own state much less nationally. They could end up as the best quality team left out if they don't manage it right when everything comes down.

It’s almost a foregone conclusion that the Big Ten and Pac 10 are not done expanding, which puts the Western Athletic Conference and the Mountain West in a precipitous position.

TCU-to-the-Big-East has some advantages for the league and the school, but the comment about Big Ten and Pac-10 further expansion being a "foregone conclusion" is certainly over the top.

The article fails to mention how Big East expansion is possible with 16 non-football members. Is TCU being considered as a "football only"?

I could see the 8 football schools separating from the others, then inviting East Carolina, Central Florida, Memphis, and TCU to have a 12-team league with a bigger "southern" presence and footprint that covers Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina. With Memphis hoops and TCU football they would gain some top-ranked programs. With ECU and UCF you would add some schools with large fanbases and competitive athletic departments.

A TCU fan on KillerFrogs.com stated that the average mileage would increase from 1,158 miles in the MWC to 1,287 miles in the BE.

With that said, most of that board don't put much stock in the rumor and no "insiders" have stated that there is teeth to it.

If the Frogs did leave, the MWC would hang their hat on Boise, Fresno, and Air Force. That is essentially the WAC all over again. In that scenario, AFA would certainly look at going Indy. With BYU, ND, Army, and Navy available for scheduling it could work to their advantage. Maybe AFA, Army, and Navy could combine together to get a TV package.

If AFA goes indy, I hope Mike Bohn gets on the phone with the AFA AD about a CU-AFA series...it's long overdue.

Even if UT and OU bolt for greener pastures, TCU should try to nestle into the remainders such as TTech, Ok State, Kansas, etc. That group still has the makings of a respectable conference, even without the big dogs.

If I were TCU I would go to the Big East right now. You get the AQ and much more TV exposure. As long as they negotiate a reasonable exit fee from the conference (in case something better comes along) I would do it.

The Mountain West looks like a fragile conference with virtually no one having allegiance (and few teams of note). Teams will leave the Mountain West in a heartbeat for an AQ conference or better TV deal. Neither of those may be hard to find in the near future (especially the TV part given the Mountain West TV deal is about the worst one out there).

I agree with CUFan above. I think, up until this spring/summer, the MWC was on a nice road of making AQ status. But once Utah left and the chaos ensued, I think the rest of the nation realized fast that the conference could end up being pretty undesirable. Now you don't have either Utah school and Boise will be seen as jumping from one weak conference to one that is a negligible improvement. If TCU goes, Boise is really going to hate life because they would have literally nowhere to go but hope for a Big 12-2 invite.
