Off-topic, but interesting: End of the MWC at hand?

Sounds like TCU feels no need to stay in the MWC without the Utah schools. Can't say I blame them; the Frogs have been screwed by conference shifts several times in the past 20 years and are likely sick of conferences they in getting weaker/destroyed (SWC, WAC, CUSA) through no fault of their own.

I think TCU to the Big East makes a ton of sense. That conference is already blessed with great media markets and adding DFW/Texas to the list would be huge. Throw in SMU (big money there has decided they want to be proud of athletics again), Memphis and either ECU/Central Florida and you have a solid 12-team league and keep the BCS spot safe.

I think this means the end of the MWC, however. Them and the WAC will end up taking the best parts of each to get to 12 and one of those leagues dies.

Geographically, the Big East makes no sense whatsoever. However, the jump in revenues that would come from a step up to a BCS conference makes a ton of sense for TCU. Truthfully, TCU should be in the Mack 10, but apparently, the Mack 10 doesn't want to get back up to 12 teams. If the Mack 10 added TCU and BYU or Memphis, it *could* remain a respectable conference. I don't think the wonks in Austin are terribly interested in keeping it a respectable conference, though.

UT does not want the competition from TCU. They also don't want to give TCU even more advantage in the recruiting department. Furthermore, they are tired of the welfare checks they write to TT, BU and ATM.

The Texas schools are all in agreement that they don't want the state split with another Texas school.

This seems out-of-place on the surface, but DFW airport would have easy flights into any Big East destination, so the travel costs wouldn't be that bad. Plus, they only deal with a one-zone time jump, unlike the two they sometimes face in the MWC. Probably the best move for them.

Seems comical that Baylor made it into the Big XII over TCU, or even Houston and SMU. Baylor is on par with Rice.

When you take into consideration the distances from the current Big East schools to Tampa, the addition of TCU isn't all that unrealistic.

This will make the Big East easier to break up once the ACC expands to 16 teams, too.

Four Superconferences. Learn it. Live it. Love it.

There will likely be enough scraps to get a 5th AQ conference after the dust settles. Geographically speaking, that conference may be ugly.

Nope. 4 superconferences of 16 teams each. Makes for a perfect "tournament". The writing is on the wall. 64 schools, no NCAA. Football playoffs. Every time a conference expands, we get just a little closer to this reality. Once the Pac 12 and Big 10(12) digest their new additions, they'll go looking again. Some schools in BCS conferences will be left out (ISU, KSU for example) some schools currently in non BCS schools will get in (TCU, Boise, UNM, UNLV). Some schools who think they're too good for a conference will either play ball or be left out in the cold (ND, UT, BYU).

UT will bolt after they are finished sucking the marrow out of the big 12 carcass

I still think when it is all said and done UT ends up in the SEC. The only conference with an attitude and egos about football big enough to handle them, they will fit right in. OU goes with them along with OSU and T. Boone's money and aTm and their financial support.

I think it could go a couple different directions. I think OU, OSU, and A&M will eventually end up in the SEC. It's a good fit for each of those institutions. UT is a different animal. UT has such an enormous sense of self worth that I think they might actually think they're better off going independent. Plus, the SEC might decide it can get enough of the Texas/Oklahoma TV market by adding the other three, and will look at adding somebody like Va Tech, Clemson, Miami or FSU to balance out the conference.

Baylor is over-represented in the Texas state legislature....and, when the XII was formed, Texas Guv Ann Richards, BU Alum, was pretty influential. Rice is a much better school than BU. SMU was the no-brainer choice for the XII since they were superior to BU in both rev sports but had that death penalty thing. I had a golf scholly offer to SMU and Baylor and didn't really like either school too much (and didn't really want to play golf to make the education). went to Vandy on an academic half scholarship....and they let me try and walk on to the golf team. point being: SMU and BU are obscenely overpriced schools that only Texas people think are hot. BU likes to think that it's the Big XII version of Vandy or N'Western or Stanford.....but it ain't.

And: BU being overrepped in Texas politics (or Texas politics having to play up to the Southern Baptist thing) is what made BU's crybaby and slander tactics for the Pac so serious. But, it worked out so good for us....wow.
