5th down, new today

I realize there is a "5th down" thread just below, but I thought this deserved a new thread.
Ariel Solomon in today's BDC says that Jay Lewenberg (sp) knew the correct down and said so on the sidelines - the coaches telling him to keep quiet. Maybe this is old news, but I hadn't heard it before. The coaches had to know whatdown it was, but I thought the official line was, 'we were all confused'

Everybody knew what the down was except for the referees. I was watching at home and when they spiked the ball on 4th down I said "What the hell are they doing, spiking the ball on 4th down?!?" Then they lined up for another play and I was like: "well, okey dokey then".

Can we please end these 5th down threads? Enough is enough, time to move on....

I remember Mizzery coming to Folsom the next year. The tigger fans were dressed as ref's with 5th down markers. That was the only time I am certain Mac ran it up. 55-7, IIRC, with a reserve WR (Robbie James) scoring on a reverse late in the game. Those were the days. We actually beat Mizzery instead of getting the red *** from them like we do now...

until somebody gets a 6th down, this will continue to be talked about, but yeah this is stupid. We wouldn't have spiked the ball on 4th down.

For me, the 5th down is much ado about nothing. We spiked the ball to stop the clock on what was really 4th down because the down marker said it was 3rd down. We wouldn't have done that if we knew that it was 4th down. We scored on the next play from scrimmage.

Funny thing is Mizzou and others blame CU for this. The refs are who bear the blame, Colorado had zero control over what down it was. I always find it funny when fans blame the other team when they are the beneficiary of crappy officiating. Blame the refs morons, the opposing team has absolutely nothing to do with it.

One step further on CUBuff98's pic:

I never blamed the other team when Clete Blakeman messed up.:smile2:
The Big 12 actually let him officiate in at least one game his former team played in.
And some say he was promoted to the NFL.
I think the NCAA actually moved him out ASAP and the NFL brought him in because they were feeling benevolent for some reason.

That's a great point. I don't resent Iowa State for Clete Blakeman's unusual decision to wind the clock.
