2001 vs. 2010 similarities

Just to start off to be clear, I am not implying that CU is gonna do what they did in 2001, just that the setup is kindof the same. I still expect us to get throttled by Mizzou!

2001 we were coming off a 3 win season
2010 we are coming off a 3 win season

2001 we had a decent start with an embarrasing loss.
2010 we have a decent start with an embarrasing loss.

2001 We went on the road to play a ranked conference opponent (KSU) that had recently had our number. We went in and won in Manhattan and thats when people started to take notice of that team.

2010 We are going on the road to play a ranked conference opponent that has had our number recently (Mizzou). If we win, CU will start to turn some heads again.

Again, not expecting us to beat Mizzou, just thought of this today. Kinda interesting.

The 2001 embarrassing loss turned out to be not so embarrassing. Plus we should have won that game at the end. We didn't get blown out.

I meant it was embarrasing that we lost at home to a WAC team. Yes I know we didn't get blown out, but it was at home and at the time embarrasing. Hell we don't know what Cal will do the rest of the way. We did get blown out that year by Texas however.

Fair enough. It did look like an ugly loss at the time.

I'll start to believe in this team if they win this weekend. I don't think that's going to happen, though.

Oh one more similarity, rushing game. It will be interesting to see if we continue to pound it in conference play.

Here's the thing, even if they do win this weekend, there's always going to be that little voice that is going to say "They're going to rip your heart out, don't get too excited". If they manage to pull off the upset this week, then get beat by Baylor, they're in no better shape than they are right now. Worse, actually. We've fallen so far that literally every week is a "show me" week. Beat UGA? Fine, go win one on the road. Beat Mizzou? Fine, show me you can sustain success over an extended period of time.

If we won 9 or so games this year and DII was retained, then the "show me" will fall into next year too.

Thats fair, and my thoughts as well. I was not implying anything.

with all due respect, i don't find the comparison so compelling. Fresno had an NFL QB and won on the last play of the game. Cal could have beaten us by 80.

08's first 4, a little out of sequence: beat CSU. struggle a bit to find ourselves against EWU at home (EWU: UH). beat a pretty good team in a flukey, get lucky way at night in Boulder (WVU: UGA). Lose by a bunch to a decent team on the road (FSU: Cal).

next two weeks lose by 2 scores to both UT and @KU, i believe. we'll see this year....but i expect to be 3-2 when we host BU.

Fresno State was awesome that year. They had David Carr as the QB and had the we will play anyone anywhere anytime mentality.

They went and beat Oregon State, and Wisconsin right after the squeaked by us. The funny thing is Hawk beat them later that season.

I know, but at the time it was embarrasing.

Another one, both coaches wanted to be run out of town by fans

Well, I don't think that's true.

But if it is, it would go a long way to explaining the field goal attempt, the 2-point conversion and the decision to keep running the ball at the end of the Georgia game.

in 2001 we never needed to be stupidly lucky to beat a 1 win team...

How were we stupidly lucky? Beatty made a great hit and the team rose to occasion. The buffs played a solid game against a very talented team. I bet you were one of the ones who thought a 1 win team was gonna mudhole us by 40.

I'm stoked that the team rose to the challenge, and Beatty made a great play--but you can't really count on stripping the ball to win games. It doesn't always work out like that.

Sure it does. It's part of the game. You force turnovers. You always try to strip the ball and they did that.

Really? How many fumbles did we force that game in how many drives? Is it really something you want to count on, or would you rather just give UGA a long field to work with?

I acknowledge that Beatty made a great play. He made that happen. I'm just suggesting it's not something that happens every drive, or something that you want to count on, if you can help it. But yes, it's great progress for this team, that they found a way to win.

Your last part. They found a way to win! No you can't count on a turnover every drive, but you can count on a team finding a way to win. The 1990 buffs really sucked because they trailed going into the 4th in about 80% of their games, yet they rose to the occasion and found ways to win.

Sorry I'm just getting really tired of people not giving the Georgia game credit. It was a nice win and I think all the people that are saying it's lucky or Georgia is only a 1 win team, were the ones who thought Georgia was gonna stomp the living **** out of us. They can't eat their crow, they have to continue to find ways to bash the buffs in a nice win.

With this logic, we lucked out in 1990 against Washington because we had to rely on getting a turnover in the end zone against a future NFL QB

We did get lucky against Washington. We did get lucky against Stanford and we got lucky against Mizzou. And we got lucky last week against Georgia. We won, and that's all that matters, but we were fortunate.

Maybe parallels to the 1990 season vs. 2001 season happening here? Remember, not only was Fresneck a bad loss in 2001, but so was Illinois in 1990...just sayin'.

Hmmm. This reminds me of those threads we had last year comparing hawk to Mac

yeah, pretty much. ask any football fan if they would consider themselves lucky to win a game if their opponent was in range to make a game winning fieldgoal at the end and fumbled, the vast majority would say yes. your comparison to 2001 is stupid, we also never lost 52-7 and had our opponent say we were one of the worst team they ever played in 2001.

and no, i never thought georgia was going to stomp us. if you look back to my post 2 weeks before that post, i said we had a decent chance to win. georgia is a really bad team this year

You can make comparisons all day long and they don't really mean anything. They are different players, coaches and opponents.

Again, I am not comparing the teams, I'm comparing the situations, so why don't you shut the **** up saying its stupid, because it's just an observation and its true. It is the same situation. By the way, we did get blown out in a game in 2001. My god people overreact and misunderstand **** sometimes. I don't know how many times I said I am not comparing the teams or saying this team is gonna do what the 2001 team did.
