BYU's problems echo CU's recent history.... Receiver talent

Here in Salt Lake this week and listened to some good college football talk on radio today.

One of their guests spoke about Utah State's buttkicking of BYU this past weekend and he had some interesting insight:

Basically blamed BYU's issues on their WR corp. Said that not one BYU receiver scares anyone so they man up, and jam the WR's at the LOS. Put 8 guys in the box, bring blitzes and stunts and BYU can do nothing on offense. They have QB talent, but still nothing.

Interestingly, he also mentioned the BYU defenders as "giving up" as the offensive unit is so hopeless, that when they get down early, they are done.

This sounds like the last few year at Colorado?

Patterson, Clemons, & Richardson have done a lot more imo than shown in the stat sheet. Defenses are playing honest again. Not to mention we got some guys throwing some blocks.

By the way, those who question why Cefalo is on the field need to watch several of the long plays vs. Georgia. Dude can block and he catches everything.

We finally have some playmakers at the WR spot and it is showing because we suddenly can run the ball.

It was nice to see the D actually have to think about keeping a safety in coverage, and watching TH break some long runs when Georgia did try to blitz.

Oddly enough I was at the game. BYU's problem goes well beyond a lack of playmaking receivers. The Cougs are seriously, flat-out slow. USU killed them, KILLED them, with the option. RBs, QB, WRs running pitch man... didn't matter. They beat BYUs lbs and dbs to the corner with punishing regularity.

Oh. And then there's the fact that Heaps, while a true freshman with a cannon arm, laser locks onto receivers like a peewee qb. As a sign in the USU section so politely put it: "BYU: You're just not very good."

This. The guy isn't necessarily a burner, but he's very physical. Love the attitude.

But this is only a problem because BYU is a passing, pro-style attack... like us. Many spread, read-option teams can get away with ****ty receivers as long as their RB and QB can run.

If you have no threats at WR, then your offense is slow. Amen.

they beat UW.

and then got ass-handed by some better than not sucking teams: AFA, Florida State, Nevada, and Utah State.

Utah State has a nice runpass QB......but those other teams are pretty good. almost ranked.

is there some weird loop where all these teams play each other with Oklahoma? really? isn't this the OOC for all of them?
