4 out of the 5 officials for our game vs. Missouri this week were part of the 5th down crew 20 years ago!!!:wow:

Chad and Jeff of "The Drive" argued it, but apparently it's true. Haven't had a chance to verify.

Guess they're taking the "20th Year Reunion" to a whole new level this week.
 
I would love to see some proof of this...if its true the Big 12 must have one crazy dude doing their referee assignments...

So sick of this 5th down ****. What about the Husker kicked ball in the endzone/touchdown? Wasn't that against Missouri too? ****.
 
Here's the list of the refs from the 1990 game according to the box score at CUBuffs.com and some updates on who I can track down...

Referee: J.C. Louderback (retired)
Umpire: Frank Gaines
Linesman: Ron Demaree
Line judge: Paul Brown
Back judge: Willie Weisbrook
Side judge: Scott Koch (officiates for the UFL)

It's been pretty well-reported in the news this week that Louderback retired after the 1990 season, but Im trying to check the rest vs. the games that have already been played this season and so far I havent come up with a match...

Well, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if this was BS...this comes from the same station that allows Chip Brown to have a talk show.
 
Well, so far I can't find anything. And it seems to me that if it were true, and seeing as the station these jerk-offs are on down here is an ESPN affiliate, and that ESPN hates Colorado, ESP{N would've been hyping this up all over the place during the game tonight.

Probably nothing to see here, although, thanks for the names. I'll keep an eye out for them during the game.
 
I think this is a bogus news item. The Big 8 (and I'm pretty sure the Big 12) has a ref retirement age:

That leaves only three of the crew who might still be officiating today.
 
While I think the story about the referees being the same is bogus, the end of that OTL article says that the same guy who ran the down marker (Rich Montgomery) is still on the chain crew for MU home games, with his two sons running the chains. So barring something weird happening, he will be there Saturday.

Yikes. :jawdrop: Although maybe he's always been a closet CU fan? He was in 1990, right?

I feel the need to back up the chain crew here. The chain crew works under the direction of the side judge and referee. Ultimately, everybody works for the white hat. Lauderbeck blew that call, nobody else. He told them what down it was, they merely flip the numbers.

Working the chains is a very, very inexact science, btw. One link here, one link there, set the sticks an inch or two in the wrong direction, and what should be a first down on a 4th and 2 ends up being a turnover.

Same with where they place the ball. My opinion of the spot rarely matches up with where the ball ends up.

It's only a few inches, or a foot, but on the third play, it ends up mattering a lot - one way or the other.
 
Maybe you can entice the refs at the flag football game to give your boys a 5th down in honor of the call tomorrow (even though they probably won't even need it). A few burritos might do the trick.

Back on topic. I'm going to hike up my big boy pants and just suck up this 5th down nonsense. First if all, it's not 5th down, it was two third downs, of which one was frittered away with a spiked ball to stop the clock. Next, most of the players on the field today weren't even born when that infamous abortion of an officiating mistake occurred. Lastly,we won't be playing Mizzou again for a very long time. And if we do, chances are that it will not be on the 25th or 50th anniversary of CU's mNC.

Complete agree. The crew member running the down marker is not allowed to change the marker without a signal from the referee. He is only allowed to ask for clarification. This definitely was a blown call by the officiating crew, not the chain crew.

What made the sequence so bizarre (among several other reasons) is that the "box man" (guy holding the down marker) didn't ask for clarification because he lost track of downs as well because he was distracted by a heart attack going on behind CU's bench during the timeout after 2nd down.
