Reality Check

Let me start by saying Dan Hawkins should be fired.

But this team's problems don't start and stop with the head coach. We've got multiple problems. First, as Jimmy Johnson has said, it's not the Xs and Os but the Jimmys and the Joes. Our talent is average at best. We have below-average QB play, and in college football that will get you beat whenever you play good teams, and usually when you play average or bad teams on the road. Our offensive skill position players are below average, our offensive line is average, and our TEs are below average. Our defense is average, and our special teams atrocious.

Well, you may say, the talent isn't great because Dan Hawkins couldn't recruit/evaluate/develop talent. Definitely some truth there, but let's face is -- our facilities suck relative to the rest of the B12. Our support sucks relative to much of the B12. We as fans and alums have work to do --- and it starts by going to games, joining the Buff Club, and opening the checkbook.

I say all of this because it's really easy to pile on Dan Hawkins. I'll be honest -- even if Knute Rockne was our coach this year, I don't think we'd win 9 or 10 games.

In sum, Hawkins should be fired but it's a long road to go for the program. I don't think there's much hope for next year to be a great, great year (unless we do something that neutralizes talent disparities, ie play option/i-bone). Still, let's quit blaming Hawkins 100% for current problems and instead look in the mirror a little bit.

And who is responsible for the talent deficit? Blaming the fans and alumni is a whitewash. Hawkins cannot spot talent and he cannot recruit it and he cannot coach it. Name one player who has demonstrated significant improvement under this staff. Should our facilities be better perhaps, but Barnett recruited with those. While we may not be at Nebraska or Texas levels, I refuse to believe that it is facilities that make Missouri or Iowa State better than CU. Coaching matters and bad coaching leads to bad recruiting leads to losing leads to less money. Will firing Hawkins fix everything immediately, of course not. Will it make things better and convince people we care about winning YES.

I honestly think we have enough talent to be an above average team. We aren't flooded with talent or depth by any means, but we have a decent amount. Our problem is mostly coaching. Get some real coaches in here and we win 8 games for sure this year, with a chance to with 9 or 10.

I disagree with ya. I think we had as much talent on the field as Missouri did. The coaching staff just cannot prepare our guys for road games. Kiesau/Hawkins was so hell bent on establishing the run that they got way too one dimensional.

Are you that guy who called in to 850 last night saying you think we should get Jimmy Johnson as our next coach? Because both of you sound foolish.

Yeah, our facilities suck.

Even Slick who called us a "have-not" said it was easy to recruit to Boulder.

CU was not out-talented last night. CU had the best RB on the field, the best WR, best DE, best CB, and more. Mizzou's TE is better than anything we have (although DeVaughn is probably just as good, once we actually throw it to him).

We were outcoached and outexecuted in special teams, period. Offensively and defensively, between the 20s, that was an even game.

Total BS...

You guys are delusional if you think CU had the same talent as Mizzou. Not even worth getting into a debate over this.

You have all vastly over-estimated our talent level. We have below average skill position players, below average QB, average o-line. our defense is average at best. Special teams are atrocious.

And for the idiot that posted a picture of Folsom Field, Gary Barnett once told me players don't give a rats a** about their surroundings (mountains and whatnot). They care about facilities and making it to the League. That's it.

I guess this just proves it's a lot easier to blame someone else. Hawk deserves a lot of the blame -- yes, most of the blame -- but our support sucks and our facilities suck. Period.

Agree with you about facilities and guys wanting to play on Sundays, but if you think that last night was the result of anything but poor preparation, poor in-game adjustments by coaches, and poor special teams play, then you weren't paying attention. Speedy is better than any back that Mizzou has. Clemons was the best WR on the field. Gabbert's play was only marginally better than Hansen. Playcalling, adjustments, especially in redzone, and special teams gaffes - that is why we lost.

Yep, the first few possessions showed that. We are NOT that bad of a team, but poor coaching, poor special teams and a weak minded team = disaster on the road.

Most of the responses here are typical of the liberal, bullsh*t entitlement fanbase that pisses me off. Hell yes it's easier to blame Hawkins for 100% of our problems. But there are some other real problems that WE the fans need to work on addressing.

I'm on board - you are a moron.

You do realize that a majority of the posters on this board are anything but liberal right?. You are a ****ing morrrrrooon.

Not a liberal or a republican. Could we do better with donations, facilities etc...? Hell yes, our alums don't compare to other schools as far as staying connected to the program or giving money. Problem is, when you have an administration that has shown it does not care about winning, people tend to be turned off by that. Hawk has been a disaster from day one and YES, most of the failures and disgraceful performances can be layed on his head.

What a f*cking joke. You guys are way over-estimating CU's talent level. You prove what a clown you are by noting that Clemons is the best WR on the field. WTF. Clemons can't carry TJ Moe's jockstrap. Compare the stats. Gabbert is 3x the QB as Hanson, and their backup is better than Hanson. Mizzou's front 7 on defense is 10x better than CUs. Speedy Stewart is a below-average starting RB in the B12.

Guys, face it -- our talent level isn't very good.

you mean rather than provide explanations it's easier to universally blame a wide-ranging set of problems on a blanket scapegoat like "liberals"...is somehow a different logic?

Blame someone else for your problems. You are entitled to national champions without having to do anything as a fanbase. Go Buffs!

My explanation is we need to better support the team. show up to games. join the Buff club. open your checkbooks. and ask Bohn to fire Hawkins.

I agree with you that Hawk has been a disaster and needs to be replaced. My point with all of this is that the fanbase needs to step it up...hopefully with a new coach next year.
