Aric Goodman

Reporter: "What makes you stick with Goodman at kicker?"

Talkins: "He made three in a row."

Oh my god this is pure comedy

:lol::lol::lol:

Not slamming the kid: Goodman is doing exactly what any coach should expect of him. Any coach can look at his past percentages and know when he's about due for another miss. He has a certain range he can make, and a certain percentage of accuracy that has not wavered (except for occasional lows) for six years.

From all reports, he works hard and wants to make his kicks. It's simply that the coaches (that is Hawkins and Riddle) keep thinking there is a magic button that will make him more accurate than his history would predict. Or they think that a good practice equals a great game, and that has never proven true.

If CU wants to win, we need to do it without depending on special teams. I'm sure Aric feels terrible this morning, but I honestly don't know that there is anything he can do to change his stripes or spots: he is who we thought he was.

These coaches are now coaching on Superstition. Oh well, its coming to an end. No one wants to play for them anymore.

I put some spacers in for you. As I said, he is who we thought he was. It's just not logical to expect a specialist to get immensely better one day, unless he has been showing a steady improvement over his career. Goodman has probably reached his potential.

A couple of things.

1. He isn't missing them on purpose. From all reports he works hard in practice, he does everything he can to be prepared, and he takes the misses as badly as anyone on the team, maybe he takes the misses to hard and lets them effect his future kicks but he certainly isn't trying to miss and doesn't like losing anymore than the next guy because of them.

2. Looking at the kicks he has made over his career and missed over his career tells you that Hawkins is the one making the bad decisions that put Aric in peoples crosshairs for negative attention. His percentage is certainly below standard for a BCS conference kicker but he is actually pretty good from inside of 40 yards. Looking at this what does Hawkins do? He either sends Goodman out for 45+yard FG attempts that history says he isn't going to hit, or passes up shorter FG attempts that history says he will hit in favor of going on fourth down (and often failing) instead of giving Aric the kind of kicks that will get him into a rythum and build his confidence or he makes play calls on third down that invariably turn a FG attempt of less than 40 into a FG attempt of more than 40. All told he is the perfect example of how not to handle a kicker.

Would Aric be a better kicker under a different coach? I don't know. Would he be a much more successful kicker under a different coach? I don't see how he wouldn't be, but of
course that could be said for a lot of our players right now.

Is he the worst kicker in long time or am I forgetting someone?

I forget the guys name but a little while back the worst kicker in a long time was a freshman at Oregon. He missed three consecutive chipshots to cost his team games, the fans were convinced his scholly should be pulled. His coaches got their and his act together, he became an AA and he is kicking in the pros last I heard.

Not saying that Goodman has this kind of potential but if the kid has the leg and cares and still isn't doing the job then you have to look at the coaches for at least some of the blame.

I remember him. The coaches put him in during his Freshman year and he missed some kicks. Big time game winning kicks. I believe he was a top recruit coming out of HS and he got better every year. He kicked for Oregon state.

EDIT: I was wrong. he was a walk on kicker.

If I remember correctly, Patrick Brougham was particularly terrible. I think I remember saying something like: "If I ever see that guy, I'm gonna fight him." I was younger and dumber then, so I don't think I would still fight him.

Aldrich. He had a pretty decent career, aside from that kick.

Yeah, Brougham was pretty bad...

Who was the kid who missed the game winner against the nubs?

Oh gawd! Jeremy Aldrich....He missed it with one second left in reg, with a 32 yarder and then made one in OT...except NU scored a TD in OT. :wow::wow::wow::wow::wow: still how many years later!

It sucks that this is the only reason I remember him for. He did have a decent career.

I do remember a kid named Leslie. Jason Leslie? I think he' was Voskeritians(sp?) backup. What a tool that kid was.

So seriously. Does Aric get another kick?

If he looks good in practice and (as Dan explains it) "sometimes you go by feel."

As opposed to statistics and past experience.

Absolutely we will see #13 again.

Hawkins may set up another failure kick or audition for Kirkwood or Castor first -- a long FG under extraordinary conditions to justify the decision, or a pretend competition watched by a few key donors, but "Goody" will kick again.

He'll probably even make a couple this year, but ... you know the rest of the story.

I'm convinced that when Dan Hawkins looks at Goodman, he remembers only the OT gamewinning kick against West Virginia. He has a rush of positive vibes and says to himself "today's the day Goodman is going to kick well for us. We'll prove everyone was wrong."

maybe one of you guys should walk on......

Ouch.

Maybe Hawkins or Riddle should consider letting one of the other five kickers on the roster have a chance to fail just as badly.
We know what he has to lose, does he know there is a possibility at least one of them can kick?

I have tried to be as even-handed as I can about Aric. My main point should be this: he's about a 50% kicker, once in a while he gets to 65%. We cannot expect after years of kicking for him to be better than he is. He works hard, he wants to do well, but those are his averages. CU cannot depend on better than that to win games, nor can we expect a different outcome without changing personnel.

I was in the student section for that game-- it looked good, and even the NU fan that livved nearby borrowed the recording of the game, and when he gave it back he said 'I think NU got away with one there. That kick looked good to me.'
