My interpretation of Hawks buyout.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the way I interpret what I've seen on his contract, he's entitled to the full amount of his salary though the term of his contract. There isn't some magic figure that gets taken off at the end of every season or calendar year. Every time he gets a paycheck, his buyout decreases.

Is this not correct? Because if it is, there really is no buyout. If we fire his worthless slack-ass right this very minute, he'd get paid the exact same amount as if we kept him on through the full term of his contract. Additionally, if we replace him with an interim (Cabral, Kiesau), we're in the same spot, at least through the course of the remainder of the season.

I'm really not seeing a downside to firing him about 10 seconds after the game clock in Norman hits zeros.

sackman,

That's how I interpret it. That we pay the same whether Dan is involved or he is not involved. That makes it a sunk cost and the decision can be made solely on the basis of whether we are better off with him or without him. Finances are a wash and therefore irrelevant.

I keep thinking back to Patton and the BBall team. Patton knew he was gone, yet Bohn let him stick around for the rest of the season. Patton sat on the end of the bench and did nothing for the last month of the season.

There is no reason to keep Hawkins. Everyone except Dan knows that he is gone. Just get it over with.

Plus we are getting out of the Big 12 saving 3 million dollars more than we thought. Why exactly are we keeping Douche Bag McGhee?

Good thing we gave him an NBA contract after a losing season with a recruiting class where all the prized recruits left.

It really is crazy that we are pulling a Patton again. Hopefully the damage is less this time.

The most important thing is that they spend this time searching for the next great CU coach!

If they fire Hawkins right now, I'd assume they would appoint someone on the staff to finish the season, correct? If they did that, would that person just maintain his current salary or would they have to pay him a "head coach" salary?

Can he be demoted to a position such as the Dal Ward janitor. Still pay him his regular salary. Give him all the sh&t jobs, then he will quit, wanting to get back into coaching. Results are we don't have to pay him for the remainder of his salary.

His contract states that he is the head coach of the football team.

I bet it also states that his duties are whatever Bohn says they are. That could be an interesting twist. Let him call himself the Head Football Coach, but his duties would involve emptying the trash cans and washing jock straps.

I know it's not even within the realm of possibility, but a guy can dream, can't he?

does it describe which team? there are about 30 intramural teams that play in the fall.

Hmmmm. I don't know for sure. I'm also not sure if it specifies which campus he's supposed to be working at. So he could go to coach the CU-Denver squad. That would be a good fit.

Ewww. Bad idea. Those jock straps would end up in everybody's lunchpails. gross.

we pay hawk around 1.1-1.2 million a season, the buyout sounds like it is closer to 850-900K based on the numbers the media likes to toss around.

Main difference being that a LOT more people care about the football program. I personally think that it is downright stupid to keep him around any longer because people are going to become more emotional about the situation and dumb things might happen/be said that could be avoided. Just look at right after texas tech, people's emotions were razor sharp and there was a lot of tension. This needs to end after getting run over by the Sooner schooner.

Maybe they don't want to have to pay 2 head coaches to lose all of the games the rest of this year.

So don't. Promote Kiesau or Cabral to interim HC and be done with it. They'd have to pay one of those guys a little more, just to be dealing with all of the crap that has surrounded the team lately, but at least they could officially begin the process of hiring the next guy. I'm convinced that they already know who they want to hire, but they have to be clandestine about it now. Fire Hawk now and the veil of secrecy can come off.

The only thing is -- each year the athletic department budget has $x. That $x budget includes the head coach's salary, it probably DOES NOT include the BUYOUT money.

i.e. the fiscal year 2009-2010 Budget called for $1.5mil for Dan Hawkins salary. It did not include an ADDITIONAL $3mil for the Dan Hawkins buyout.

Based on the contract, prior to negotiations, the buyout for Hawk will be ~$2.4m when fired after the Nebraska game.

While we want to see Dan tarred and feathered, the danger is that you act like children to every coach watching CU. If CU acts like bush league in how they treat Dan on the way out, it might hurt CU in attracting some of the top talent that will be available after the season. I still think letting him go is a good idea, but do it right, like Minny did. No games and demotions to dumping trash cans. That would bite CU on the ass for a long time to come as far as attracting top notch coaches.

Woelk/ringo stated 1.8 post Nebraska game, do you have different (more correct) info?

Only have the contract to base my numbers off of. ;)

It sounds like Woelk and Ringo are basing their numbers off the fact that there are two years remaining. The last two years of his contract are ~$1.8m. The contract is prorated monthly though and runs from July to June, so after November, depending on the timing of the firing, Hawk will be due ~$1.8m plus ~6/12 of this years salary.

TECHNICALLY Woelk and Ringo are right, assuming this year is a sunk cost anyway, and it sounds better from the AD's perspective to gloss over the remainder of this year and just report the last two years of his contract as being bought out, but the ACTUAL cost of firing him after nebraska will be ~$2.4m

It's just creative accounting by the AD to make things sound more palatable.
