Does the next coach need to go find a kicker in this class?

Need a punter more than anything....can live with a few missed field goals, but the 25 yard punts every single time are absolutely crippling
Gotta agree. Must find a punter. Losing the field position game sucks and really puts the O and D in a bad place.
Not sure about our crop of placekickers behind Goodman to know if we need improvement there or not.

I think it's a coaching issue. DiLallo got worse over the years under Riddle and even Crosby's percentage went in the crapper with Riddle coaching him.
Don't recruit a kicker or punter. Let the new ST guy do an eval in the spring. If the guys we have can't play, go find some guys over the summer.

I would be fine with letting the next ST do the evaluations in the spring. But I want some pressure put on these guys for a change, let Castor and Grossnickle know up front that the free passes for poor performance are over.
A lot of the best kickers in college football came to their schools as walk-ons. With the limited numbers of schollies we have available this year and the kickers already on the roster and on schollie I would not use one for a kicker unless we have a shot at someone who is really special like a Crosby.
At the same time a lot of kickers understand that they may have to earn their way on to schollie as a walk-on and are prepared to do so. It would not be a bad move by the new coaching staff to spread the word among the kicking community that the positions will be open for competition next year with a schollie available to be earned (kind of like they did with the kick snapper position this year.) Bring some guys in, make it a fair and open competition and if a walk-on earns it put him on schollie. If not and the current guys don't show they can do the job then look for legs in the next recruiting cycle.

Agreed. I believe the kickers on the roster have talent. They need to be coached. Most ST guys dont know that much about kicking or punting, they need a kicking/punting coach.

Talent is there... I would want to bring in another punter as competition...Coaching and TRAINING, off season regiment needs to be changed for them. All the kickers need to work their asses off while playing at CU. Every year getting noticeably better etc.. It is not happening at this moment. There are a couple of my guys getting looked at, one punter and one kicker. The punter is the best in the nation hands down. Punted 35 times this year for a 47 avg. On a small 3a school in MO. He went to a ARK kicking camp past summer, was told by the ST coach you are better than our starting kicker and punter.. The kicker is a juco redshirt. From CO. Great leg, accurate and works his butt off.
I would change a few things, I am trying to get the GA position or ST coach. So I bid yall farewell and hope I can get the chance to make a huge difference at CU for a long time. I have enjoyed posting on the site.

This is sure a painful subject.
I guess I would say: be careful what you wish for, guys.
Regardless of who is the punter, THIS is what we have long-snapping-wise. People wondered why Riddle high-fived the punter after this crazy punt. It was because it was amazing that he was able to get it off at all. (Yes, the longnsapper is a true freshman and should get better, but I don't see anyone holding his performance under the microscope.)
The ball came in low, skipped on the astroturf and landed in front of him. He must have had some baseball experience as a shortstop scooping up ground balls.
And Riddle comes out with this statement in the Post. (I'm not quoting, I'm linking.)
Basically saying he thinks Grossnickle will go down as "one of the best ever" punters CU has seen.

What makes this so difficult is that we don't know how much influence the coaching staff had on these guys' performance. We can speculate that Goodman was given more chances to kick than the other guys - the benefit of knowing the coaches and having experience. We know that Grossnickle wasn't recruited as a punter, but was switched that direction. And we don't have much time to predict who will get it together, before deciding whether to throw the baby out with the bath water and start fresh --- with another unproven freshman K/P at best.

I was incredibly impressed that Nickle picked that one up off the carpet without letting his knee touch the ground (and thus causing a safety).

Me, too. And it all took place in half a second.
I understand it's been a long and painful year for all of them. I don't want to throw the young snapper under the bus, but we did not make it easy on the punter.
Grossnickel has improved a lot since just the spring, so I think he will be ok. He's a pretty good athlete and just learning to punt.
I have way more concern for PK. My observations in the spring and early fall were that both Castor and Kirkwood did NOT get the ball up and essentially had average legs with low trajectories. Goodman's were noticeably higher. As much as I wanted one of them to beat out Goodman, I don't see the talent.

I would like to see what Grossnickel can do with a little bit of consistent protection in front of him. It seemed like until the last 3 games (hey what a coincidence, something must have happened) he was constantly kicking under pressure. It is hard for any punter to get a rhythm when he is constantly worried about getting the punt smacked back into his face.
Same happened with Goodman, last three games he had a lot less pressure and seemed to relax a lot more and just kick.
