Recruiting momentum is non-existent right now. This was never going to be a stellar class, considering all the factors surrounding the program, but we are going to have issues if Embree and crew cannot land some difference makers that sign on the dotted line in February. We also need to start building some momentum for the 2012 class.

I know he took over a really bad situation, but Embree needs to work some magic over the next six weeks or so. This program needs more than the usual recruiting bump that all new coaches tend to enjoy.

Some randome thoughts:

It appears that this staff is hampered more than most "new staffs" in that they were generally NOT out recruiting and researching for the last year, but out of football or in the NFL.
A lot has changed since EB and JE were working the High School circuit, including these kids were in middle school.

The Brock Berglund change of heart remains odd and more than a little bothersome to me. I don't for a minute buy that Brock went to KU because he wanted to be in a spread offense. Spread Offense is a career killer for a QB with NFL aspirations. I think it is related to Kiesau leaving and I have concern that Kiesau had something to say to the Valor Christian coach that changed everything for Brock. Hopefully it was something like "the Mullen kid will be at CU in 2012 and will be a four year starter"....

The good news is that this was slated to be a small class and I concur that it was never going to be a "great year". Next year, we will be able to offer 25 scholarships and probably a few more for early enrollies who would count against 2011 (JC guys and early HS grads who could enroll in Jan of 2012). I would expect a pretty nice haul next year.

The model I've observed is that (generally) the first class is a tough one.
The 2nd year is a lot better and can be very good. If the team performs poorly on the field in 2011, there is usually a "pass" given and the coaching staff can still sell recruits on the vision.
If 2011 shows promise on the field, that 2012 class could pop big time.

By year 3 (2013) the results on the field in year 2 have a lot to do with how recruiting goes. No more passes are given. Hawkins got the team to a bowl in year 2 so his 3rd class was his best on paper.

When teams lose momentum in the recruiting dept (due to poor play), I think the skill of Talent-Evaluation becomes more critical than Sales-Prowess. You no longer are going after kids who have 200 offers, but kids who may not have offers. Our last staff seemed good at this (at least). Winning trumps Sales Pitches every time.

JE/EB/Tui/Kennedy are known as great recruiters, but I'm not sure of their talent evaluation skills (could be good, just don't really know). I hope we don't find out. That means we need to win some games and hopefully we can see how these coaches recruit against the big boys in years 2, 3 and beyond.

Dude, use firefox. It automatically puts a red underline under anything that is spelled incorrectly.

Dahhhhh - I get one obvious mis-spell and one "not a real word". And I do use Firefox, but prefer to turn the spell check off as it flags every slang word. I spell pretty good without it, thank you very much. So, my sincerest apologies for adding an E at the end of random, and capitalizing some words I wanted to stand out....

Are you not getting enough sleep or what? Seriously dude, I know it's a bit slow on here but you are now the spelling police?

Why dont we wait till after the dead period is over before declaring momentum is nonexistant.

BB wasn't saying it couldn't be salvaged, he is calling it like it is. Losing Brock and Willingham are big blows to perception, if not future talent base.

Yes - I hope things pick up here over the next few weeks. Gonna be a nail-biter.

Time will tell with this year's recruiting.

I do not know what the delay has been with the staff. We finally got the Bobby Kennedy word - not sure why it took so long to get him in the fold. Eric Bieniemy is still playing the NFL game, I'm not sure he's even allowed to do any recruiting yet (has he taken "the test"?). We still don't know who the QB coach is going to be. Or who the S&C coach will be. We still don't know if Hagan is going to be on the staff, or not (recruiting coordinator).

It would have been really great to have all these coaches on board as soon as the coaching announcement was made but it never seems to quite work out that way. I tend to agree that the momentum that was created by the coaching change is all but dead now - that's partly due to the dead period, I'm sure. Hopefully they will jump on things in earnest in a few days when the dead period ends.

As for Brock Berglund, I hate that situation. He seems like a very talented player and I am not sure why CU backed off him. There are lots of "rumors" of off-the-field problems, but nobody ever wants to say what they are. I hate that. Don't say there are "off the field" problems and then refuse to comment on what they are. The whole situation just looks bad and losing out to KANSAS of all places - that just sucks.

Embree will certainly get a free pass for a while. It will be interesting to see how long that lasts.

for me that is one 5 win season. after that, 7 per or forget about the nostalgia.

i stand by my stock hesitance about Mac throwback hires....from 2 months ago. it's all feel-good now and i want to believe....but i don't like the nostalgia feel=automatic winning around here.

doesn't add up to me. nothing is that easy.

I hope no one thought winning at CU would be easy. I do think that a "throwback" hire does have certain advantages that a complete outsider wouldn't.

I think CU will be very fortunate to win 5 games next season.

Jesus you guys are acting like Texas fans acting like it's the end of the world.

EB is cleared to recruit and I don't believe the NFL demands have been that cumbersome the last few weeks. I'd guess he's spent plenty of time on film and making phone calls (even during dead period, he can talk to coaches). He should be able to hit the road big time come Monday. He can make more in-person visits than Embree and I'd expect his ability to travel and meet kids will have an impact.

Will be REAL interested in how he recruits for RB. We don't really know how big of a need it is, but Hagan has a good idea and there's film on the 3 freshman who redshirted, since every practice is filmed.

Go ahead, play the fool and be like the hawk backers telling everyone to relax, everything is fine the last 3 years.
It's early, everyone knows that, but losing berglund and now willingham isn't a great start for a staff everyone keeps raving about as awesome recruiters.

January is a big month, be the great recruiters and salvage this class. CU needs to win games and show future recruits that a good thing is happening here in boulder.

What were you expecting this class? A bunch of blue chips? New staff that's had 3 weeks and is in the dead period. It was a lot class anyways. Quit getting your panties up in a bunch.

4 verbal commits on December 30th is a majorly ****ty place to be.

Worse, when Embree took over on December 6th, he walked into a situation where you could count the number of 4* prospects with legitimate interest in CU on one hand... and you wouldn't need to use all your fingers.

As I said in the beginning, pulling in a class ranking somewhere in the 30s would take 2-4 four star signees and then filling the rest of the class with three star guys who have other BCS options.

Also, we're only likely to sign about 14 guys on February 2nd. So we're looking to add 9 or so from where we are right now.

OT - Marc Mustoe (3*)
OT - Alex Lewis (3* grayshirt)
OC - Alex Kelley (3*)
LB - Brady Daigh (3*)
WR - Nelson Spruce (3*)

That's a solid start, especially when we're looking at senior losses from the 2010 squad and whether we are going to have a talent gain or talent drain:

QB - Cody Hawkins (Berglund loss was painful)
RB - Corey Nabors
WR - Scotty McKnight, Travon Patterson, Kendrick Celestine
TE - Ryan Wallace
OL - Nate Solder, Keenan Stevens
DE - Marquez Herrod
LB - B.J. Beatty, Michael Sipili
CB - Jalil Brown, Jimmy Smith
PK - Aric Goodman

I like where we are at on the OL. Important that we got a LB and a WR. But we need our QB and we need to load up on LBs, CBs and WRs. I'd also like to see a DT even though we're not replacing. With Cunningham, Goree and Obi, we have to replace 3 after next year and it would be good to get 1 a year early.

I do not understand why some took my post as being dramatic. The new coaching staff certainly walked into a very bad situation and being pushed right up the dead period did not help matters.

But that does not change the fact we are sitting at four verbals and only a handful of visits lined up for January thus far. We need a spark, hopefully the assistants coming on board will be the key. I think even the coaches themselves will tell you they need to find a few difference makers by February, small class or not.

Simple, if you're not praising every single move or non move you are being dramatic or negative. I know this is going to be a smaller class and it was going to be a situation where there wasn't going to be much time.

**** OFF, nobody's in panic mode. Maybe some fans thought they might see some better results by this time. Is it irrational? Maybe so. I'd like to think this great recruiting staff could hang onto some colorado kids.

I think things will be looking much better in a few weeks.

The simple fact is that the last 2 (maybe even 3) recruiting classes have been pretty bad. We cannot afford another bad class. In the Big 12, we generally could count on some wins mot years with KU, Iowa St., and KState, not so in the PAC 12.

I'm just saying that someone makes a thread like this all the time and it's the same answers.

I am puzzled by the lack of LBs lining up here.

Cabral's track-record speaks for itself in terms of talent-development and he's been recruiting throughout.

The fact is we are thin there, and he really hasn't pulled in any name guys in a long time. Dizon wasn't exactly sporting 4 stars. What's the deal there? Did he quit trying under Hawk? This is the one position where I can't make excuses. You'd think he'd have some guys interested in playing here.

Hasn't there been some attrition?

If I was Embree I would sign AT LEAST 20 players - maybe more. You know they won't all qualify / make it in to school.

I'm bummed about Berglund as well. But I don't think it was a change of heart on his part. I think JE will carry som ships over to next year, which is probably a good idea.

Can't really disagree more on this one. Our next class is already huge, we need to get some guys in here this year. Saving up scholarships is not a legitimate option at this point imo. I'm not advocating offering everyone that has ever touched a football a scholarship, but JE can't just wrap up this class and stockpile for next year.

Hey ****er, I'm the reason you're green.

I'm not sure if Cabral was their primary recruiter but Major, Katoa, Rippy, Nobriga, and Webb were all pretty good recruits. Nobody could recruit the last year and a half with dead coach walking.

Well, I'm sure his preference would be to fill this class. But if he can't get guys he thinks will help the team, he won't waste 'ships this year.
