Get the Samoan, Hawaiian and Polynesian population back up

Anyone noticed how the Samoan, Hawaiian and Polynesian has gradually decreased in recent recruiting classes? I think we only got one kid (Kaiwi Crabb) in last years class. Liloa Nobriga was the only one the year before, Lynn Katoa and Max Tuioti Mariner in 08 and 4 players in 07. What up with that? A lot of CUs best players are from the islands. Need to get those numbers back up. Hopefully Tui is as good as the say for recruiting among the Samoan, Hawaiian and Polynesian nation.

I think the strategy is pretty clear. Recruit Colorado, Texas and California first, then pull some kids out of HI, AZ, NV second, then sprinkle in kids from the rest of the country.

I agree. Generally bring a toughness while also being very popular in the locker room.

We have had a lot of success in the past with kids of island decent out of California. I would hope that we can get back to that as well as getting back in on some of the top kids out of Hawaii. Cabral has a solid record of recruiting and supporting these kids, if Tui can help as well we will be in good shape.

These kids tend to be contributors, doing what is needed to help the team win. We need to get a bunch of that attitude back.

I'll have to agree to disagree with you there

you stick with what has worked in the past up until now. Islanders have been instrumental to CUs success. But these days you gota get who you can, but its always a big bonus to sign a good number of kids from the states you have always hit hard in the past to keep the pipelines active.

so what your saying is we need to work Texas Colorado and California... and sprinkle in a bunch of other states like Hawaii and New jersey?

Polynesians are great. Tough guys and they have great names. We should be recruiting them. However, in a good year we might sign 3-4 kids from the Islands...maybe. Many of the best Polynesian recruits come out of SoCal anyway. California is where we will make or break our recruiting each year.

What you're advocating is really a non-strategy. The scatter plot approach to recruiting does not work. Focusing on primary states (CO, CA, TX), then moving to secondary states (AZ, NV, HI), and then other states is the best approach.

we've been hit or miss on these guys in the last 5-10 years or so. but, you see a lot of the islanders in the NFL....i don't know if it's a ratio or % that's comparable to places like Mississippi and Louisiana that have the highest per capita NFL'ers but seems like a good %.

you also need continuity in places where talent is consistent and the HS programs can practice year round--whether it weather related or that's just what they do (football a year round sport like in Texas). Hawk liked to talk about how coaches "down there, really like what we're doing"....but I'm gonna call some BS on that. Where were the results. you need win over HS coaches, build a reputation a team that is physical, plays fast or whatever....an identity that kids can gravitate to and recognize when they watch you WIN games on TV (Toledo reference, here). look at the QB position at Tech or Missouri even, two former "have nots" who have really been QB centered and successful the last few years.

Agreed. The primary and secondary states strategy is huge because with those particular recruits, in a few years the ones we missed out on will be the ones our conference opponents are using to beat us. Tui knows AZ well, and I hope he can establish good connections with high schools in greater Salt Lake, Los Angeles and Dallas (Euless). We win with strength and intensity up front and I look forward to what the coaches can do with recruiting in this area of need.

I imagine you're thinking that SLC has some decent Polynesian players, so Tui should be making connections. I for one though would rather have him focus on SoCal (where lots of Polynesians are) and AZ. SLC simply does not have a lot of great players year in and out, so I wouldn't focus on that area too much.

Teaser alert.

I'm going to have some info to post in the morning. Fans of this thread will be happy.
