Recruiting Texas

With our new emphasis on recruiting Texas and our move to the Pac 12, I hope that we start regularly scheduling non-conference games in Texas. Houston, Rice, SMU, TCU, UT, aTm, Baylor, Tech, North Texas, UTEP, etc. It will help with exposure and kids can back home. A big plus for recruiting.

I'd expect us to do that. We also have a lot of boosters & alums in Texas. We need to throw them a bone.

I don't really care for Texas but I would be open to seeing us open up some home and home's with OU and Okie Lite. KSU and KU for that matter as well.

As a Buff refugee living in Texas, I'd like to pitch in my two cents:

Please wait until October before scheduling any away games south of the Red River. September is still hot, with highs in 90's not uncommon. If you are going to schedule a game in September, make it a home game in Folsom. The ability to enjoy a football game in Texas increases dramatically during the second half of the season.

Be smart about which teams are chosen based on geography and cupcake snack value.

High Value Recruiting Meccas + Super sweet cupcake flavor:
Rice Owls
North Texas Mean Green
SMU Mustangs
Texas State Bobkats

Great Metro Area recruiting - Not an automatic win
TCU Horned Frogs
Houston Cougars
Texas Longhorns

Potentially tough games in big stadiums that are in the boonies and therefore have less recruiting value.
Texas A&M
Texas Tech
Baylor

Cupcakes in the boonies (not as much recruiting upside)
Sam Houston State (far, far from Houston)
Stephen F Austin (nowhere near Austin)
Texas Southern
Prairie View A&M
UTEP
If CU schedules in Texas, focus on the first group. No reason CU should come home with a loss. If Embree gets the Buffs playing in the top 20, then schedule the Longhorns. Otherwise, no. It doesn't help recruiting to watch the Buffs get pounded in a stadium full of 105k burnt orange Longhorn fans.

Then there are lots of bowl games in Texas that would throw the Texas alumni a bone. It would be at the expense of the Colorado based fan, though. The Alamo and Cotton Bowls are premium. The others, not so much: Sun, Houston, Texas, Armed Forces, ect aren't going to be bringing Texas based Buff fans out in force.

In closing, it's too bad Texas is such a fertile recruiting ground for D1 talent. If not for that, it's just a hot, inhospital place that many Buffs fans would just as gladly ignore. As for the Texas based CU alumni, well, Texas is a big state. It's as easy to fly to Denver as it is to travel between San Antonio, DFW and Houston.

not sure this grouping is that cohesive. right now today, TCU and (soon, again probably) UT will be clearly better than Houston. and "not an automatic win" is pretty optimistic for those two. I'd play Rice and UH and get into Houston. don't see any need to play ATM or Tech. UT, we'll see.

Not on Skid's list, home-home with SMU in Dallas might be a better "win-win" as far as winning OOC and having a Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex presence than TCU. we'll see where the Frogs are at after Dalton and in the Big East.

we did recruit Texas best when we and the bigtime state schools were in a different conference....so, some kids might like to come West again.

Agree that we should schedule some Texas schools for OOC games to help bolster recruiting. The smartest schools to schedule right now would be Rice, SMU and Houston as these are all potential W's and set us up for more exposure in the Dallas/Houston metroplex areas. I would save UT/ATM games for a few years when we are good. No sense in scheduling them right away and risk getting blown out and hurting our chances at top talent.

I would also recommend scheduling San Diego State and Fresno State and San Jose State as well to maximize exposure to California.

How classic would it be if Texas St. hires Hawkins, and then we put them on the schedule to get Austin/San Antonio exposure?

Both Texas State and North Texas are on I-35 and pretty darn close to some good large metro area recruiting grounds. These two programs should definitely be considered in the same light as SMU, Rice and Cougar High.

North Texas is darn close to Flower Mound, Colleyville, Southlake, Allan, and the northern DFW 'burbs. With Riddle coaching at North Texas, what could possibly go wrong?

Texas State is the best school to access San Antonio shy of going to the Alamo Bowl. If Hawkins were to land in San Marcos, that would create a real incentive for CU's Texas alums to rally around.

EDIT: The inaugural football season for the University of Texas San Antonio is 2011. Let's get those Roadrunners on the OOC schedule.

UNT, Texas State and UTSA are less of a threat to our fragile program than June Jones's Ponies and the Youhoo (U Hou) under Sumlin. These are the yummy Texas cupcakes we want.

Has anyone heard anything about McGee? Has he been on the road?

A&M recruits Houston and SE Texas heavily. Would be a good focus. UTEP is a lost cause as El Paso is a huge outlier. Economically, it is more tied to New Mexico, and it's even in the Mountain Time Zone for christsake. Getting exposure in the early years of UTSA's WAC run (Larry Coker) may be a smart play too.

He's making a visit to Mullen to speak with Willingham and then Kanavis and Cabral are going to do an in-home together with the Willinghams. Kanavis will be able to speak to why he left the Houston area and chose CU over TAMU (plus he coaches our OLBs).
