Early commitments

I was thinking about the lack of momentum recruiting had under Hawkins and, really, how good a job JE and the guys are doing this year. I was also thinking about how we have gotten just a little bit of momentum as guys have signed.

So, we all know Hawkins hardly got any early commits. How important do you think it will be for JE to maybe get a couple of big time commits early in the process next year? Face it, these guys talk to each other a lot. They recruit each other. I think that if Embree can get a couple of fairly highly rated guys to commit in the summer that next year's class could really blossom.

It is essential that the new staff garners some early momentum. With the numbers that CU will have available, we need double digit commitments by the start of the season. Hawkins' early recruiting strategy flat out sucked. I am expecting Embree to make a much different approach. It will likely mean more of our commits taking visits to other schools, but it is a risk that you have to take in today's recruiting landscape.

Hawks lack of early commits and his "take some time and see, right fit" approach were also undone by losing.

if we're 5-3 when recruits start taking visits, i think you'll see more on-site verbals than if CU has lost 2-4 conference games in a row (again) and blow a lead at Folsom after losing to a Tech or Baylor.

:yeahthat: It will be especially important, I think, to get a QB commit early (paging Mr Miles, Mr Cyler Miles) next class, as most of the really good ones get grabbed up quickly.

The debate about early commits vs. later commits will probably never be answered completely. That said there are some negatives about early commits and some bigger positives.

When you take early commits you take the risk that the guy is going to fail to develop as a HS senior and then you get the bad vibes of either pulling the kids schollie or taking a guy who you really don't want. You also might chase away or lose out on a kid who would actually be better who doesn't want to deal with the guy you already have at his position.

On the other side the right early commits can give you good momentum and make other kids want to join in. Add to that the kids you have committed working on their friends to join them. Kids want to play for a winner, if other good kids are coming they are more willing to look at giving you a chance.

I am actually pleasantly surprised with the quality of class that Embree and staff have been able to put together this late in the cycle. Another real positive is that not only are they getting looks (and some commits) from some areas and programs that have traditionally been significant providers of talent.

I'm surprised as well. They've been actively recruiting for maybe 3 weeks, considering quiet and dead periods. Early on, we dropped to 3 commitments, and just a few weeks later, we sit at 15.

I like the hustle.

I'd love to have Cyler Miles commit as early as possible for the next class. Thurston and Callahan wouldn't hurt either.
