Our PA announcer @ basketball games....

I know he's worked at CU a long time, but Ive never thought that his work gets the hoops crowd into the game...his voice is kind of monotone and dreary, even when we do something that should get the crowd going like a dunk or a 3 pointer (that ...1...2...3 thing is terrible with the flat voice!) - I feel like for basketball we need someone with a little more excitement and someone that the crowd can feed off of...am I the only one feeling this way??

You're not alone. His delivery is perfect for announcing the visiting team, but he doesn't bring it for the CU announcement or any of the stuff to rally the crowd. He tries, but it's just not in his bag of tricks.

isnt the PA alan cass?... yeah he is boring as **** when he was PA at the donks games

I disagree wholeheartedly. I cannot stand basketball announcers that do all that crap. Every NBA team has an announcer like that because the games are so boring and they need to get the crowd into it. I hate it when I am watching a boring ass NBA game on TV and I hear the courtside announcer having an orgasm because somebody hit a three to cut the lead to 20.

Having a huge homer announcer is akin to putting "Louder" on the scoreboard. It just looks desperate.

If you get crowds into the arena, the volume will take care of itself.

Fair points - I'm not a huge fan of the over-the-top NBA announcers either but I would like it if we had someone who can at least do some voice inflections (something in between what we have now and the OTT NBA guys)- I have been to a lot of sports venues and heard a lot of different PA announcers and I have never heard a more monotone PA guy than what we have..

When I've been watching on TV this year, the crowd does not seem to be terribly loud, even when the joint is sold out...

I see what you are saying, but I don't think the announcer does much to make the crowd louder.

Okie State and Kansas games were both tremendously loud this year. The Foam Dome is a pretty loud building if you fill it up.

This is a very minor thing but it has always pissed me off. At the basketball and football games when they do the cheer where c-o-l-o-r-a-d-o is spelled out the PA announcer goes on the mic in the middle of it says "now its time to sing the fight song". Somehow everyone manages to sing the fight song multiple times during the game without this idiot reminding us to do it. The band playing the fight song is usually a pretty good indication that the fight song is going on. Please tell me someone else gets as mad as I do everytime this happens.

It's probably getting to be about time for him to retire. He's got to be around 70.

Sorry, but I'll take Alan Cass over the young guy (probably) who does the Nuggets games, and feels compelled to add four or five syllables to everybody's name. Alan Cass does a really good job without being overbearing. He's a pretty cool example of getting the CU faculty involved and invested in athletics. Cass happens to be a professor at the school of music. It's a pretty sad sign for society in general that people want somebody who's one of the few basketball PA guys who isn't all about drawing attention to himself gone...

There are plenty of PA announcers who dont suck, but also dont draw attention to themselves. There is a middle ground. The best is Alan Roach who does the Broncos and Avs games and also the last couple of Super Bowls. His voice is truly a gift from God. At the very least we need him to do our football games. I dont want anyone to lose their job, but frankly Alan Cass just isint any good.

This. I used to not be a fan of Cass, but after dealing with the jackass the Nugs have had for the last 3 or 4 years, I'll take understated and classy any day over loud and douchebag.

The Roach is about the only example of "middle ground" these days, and he's a little pricey.

Alan Cass is awesome, a member of a dying breed, and I guarantee the next guy will be unbearable.

i'm right there with ya, makes us look smalltime.

Just what I was gonna say. I miss Alan Roach on the Broncos 850 broadcasts, and him doing Rockies games. His voice was made for being a PA, and good for him that he is so good that he gets to do Super Bowls and other national events now.

Thanks for telling us we are now going to spell out Colorado & then sing the fight song - the cheerleaders' signs & the band playing music was confusing to me - now I know what I'm supposed to do. :bang:

My issue with the announcer is that he still is doing the same shtick that he was doing when there were only 2,000 of us at the games & his voice was the only noise in the gym. Now that we're actually getting some crowds up there, the instructions are totally annoying to me.

the 3, 2, 1 thing is dumb....i've seen it made fun of on other fan boards. but far worse in the 90's there was a "Domino's 3 point delivery" or something after 3's. that was really sucky.

i don't have the same objection to Cass as others....i can "mos def" live without some lame "youth" oriented announcer or a lot "booya" type stuff. not lame because he would be young, just lame because youth marketing type stuff that produce those "typologies" are lame.

and Mos Def is pretty cool.

It wasn't like today with the yelling and screaming, the disc jockey-type stuff. I think it annoys people, and it bothers me to some degree.

Man, I'm gonna miss that dude!

Sounds like the timing is perfect. I really appreciate his decades of service. I'm sure he'll love to be able to watch games with his wife and grandson in the coming years and get to have fun being a fan with his family. Pretty cool.

I have had the pleasure of working with Alan Cass in the past and have to say he will be missed greatly by all the staff at CU. The man can tell some great stories of his life and CU. He was the one that started the IN...COM...PLETE at Bronco games. Thanks for your many many years of dedication to the Buffs Alan

Even with him gone, we should use a voice recording of his for "here comes Ralphie." It is an iconic soundbite.

Mr Cass has been a great tribute to CU for so long. It pains me to think of CU basketball, especially, without his calm voice. If you really like that hyped-up NBA style of announcing, all power to you. I just can't stand it, and I feel Mr Cass does things the perfect way for a sport than can often slip into a frantic pace. A crowd should be able to understand its own place in things, and not require a cattle-prod to know when to cheer.

Mr Cass' understated and professional handling of announcing for CU has been a source of pride for me; that this university allowed our teams and events to stand on their own. He lead me out onto the court for years with his classic "Supa... Dupa... Tuba... Cheer," and his iconic voice echoing in Folsom always seemed to add a grandeur to even the most inconsequential of non-conference games.

I think many of the people who were complaining about him in this thread will realize that Cass, and his classy voice, are near irreplaceable. I'd like to add my voice of appreciation to him in respect of his many years of service to this university. I hope he, and his wife who sits in fort of me at basketball games, enjoys his increased free time and work on his research projects.

I rarely get to CU basketball games, but I've always appreciated Cass' demeanor. His voice was CU athletics. Hearing somebody else over the speakers at Folsom or the Foam Dome just won't seem right. I'll miss hearing Alan Cass. CU games, be it football or basketball, won't be the same without him.
