CU Buff finish golfers last in 13-team field

i winced. ouch. last place by 20.

"The Buffs placed 13th at Pelican Hill Golf Club with a three-round team total of 1,138 -- 20 strokes behind 12th-place Texas-Arlington despite improving five strokes from the second to third round."

Better yet, drop golf altogether.

I hope this isn't a scholarship sport at CU.

CU just acquired a golf course, so i'd say golf is here for a while as a scholly sport. CU has been respectable in men's golf....not great, but they've certainly outperformed the football team or men's hoops over the last 5 years by comparison. i'm pretty sure they made the NCAA tournament at least once and been to regionals. now, buying the golf course which is halfway to DIA from Boulder was strange move to me since it's pretty inaccessible to the campus community. previously, CU was the only school in the Big XII that didn't have their own golf course....and offer student discounts and such. but, since it's not really close to Boulder...and i haven't seen much "outreach" about it on campus i don't suspect it gets much student play.....makes the decision to buy an already failing course a bit odd. but, spending 700,000$ on a new logo is odd to me, too.

It better be a scholarship sport. Why would you want to drop sports, we need to be expanding our athletic dept not cutting. Especially in sports where players can go on to be high profile professionals (unlike track etc... where you only hear about them every 4 years)

also, we are one sport away from having less than the NCAA minimum for D-1 status, IIRC. and men's golf is probably max 10 schollies very few of which are full rides.

CU does have some well-known golf alums: Hale Irwin, Steve Jones, Dale Douglass all have won majors. more recently, a guy from Denver whose name escapes me who has won some lesser PGA events.

last recruiting class was apparently really good (according the website) which is to be expected with the new course.

edit: Jonathon Kaye is player i couldn't remember, according to wiki he's won twice on Tour and finished in the top 20 world rankings.

For reals?!!?!? Other than Hale Irwin have you ever heard of ANY CU golfer on the professional circuit?

It wasn't just a logo, didn't you get the memo? It was a brand, an image, a new revolutionary way of looking at the world and being seen by the world, which is sure to propel CU into the academic/athletic/social startosphere...slanted letters can do that.

The team used to come practice sometimes out at the golf course I worked at just north of Boulder while I was at CU, Lake Valley Golf Club. The team has been in kind of a rebuilding stage after Coach Simspon died a few years ago.

The guy who was the assistant pro there is now the head of golf at the new Colorado National (which I think used to be a Troon golf course). I believe our team now has a real practice facility there instead of just bumming range balls and tee times from surrounding courses like us that would let them on (head pro at Lake Valley is a CU alum and ex-CU and NFL football player).

They need to convince that guy who owns the fancy golf course in SW Denver (the Fex Ex guy?) to let them practice / play at his golf course.

you are right. i confess. i understated the profound impact of the new consolidation of the CU "brand" for my own snarky, self-serving purpose. i should mention that the new "brand" made it's debut on the CU website just yesterday. so, i figure most AB'ers got official communications from their bosses (those that still have bosses)....that a significant raise is on the way due to corrected misconceptions about CU's ""brand" that were cleared up once and for all in the last 24 hours.

yeah, the situation they used to have was like CU playing their basketball games at the Denver Colosseum or Boulder High....talk about "facilities" and football and how CU lags.....in golf, they were off the map. riding horses in the Indy 500. nice move for them....but, as i say, i wish it was closer to campus and more accessible to students.

i used to play Lake Valley some in the 90's. far preferable than Flatrions (which has maybe two real golf shots on the whole course).

Sanctuary is the Remax guy. there's also a newer Golf Club of Colorado that's supposed to be awesome in Parker.

you are in OK, the OU and OSU teams have played at Oak Tree in Edmond when they want to since i was in high school. Oak Tree has hosted the PGA, US Amateur and one of the Senior majors here in the last 4-5 years. that's a real golf course, i promise you.
