Easy on the Tad Boyle love.

From people in this forum and members of the media, there is a lot of Tad Boyle love going around and
the general consensus seems to be that he was a great hire. Yes we are having our best season in some
time, but this is also the most talented team weve had in a while. If our coach was was Bzdelik or Steve Mcclain
or Mike Dunlap we would still be having a very good year, who knows maybe even better. Its also worth noting
that it was Bzdelik, and not Boyle who put together this team. Yes Boyle seems like a good guy, yes I like his
up-tempo system, but lets see where we are at in a year or two before declaring him our savior.

Yes but we would not have won on Saturday after being down 22 and we also swept KSjU and beat Mizzou at home. He's a great coach and his past at UNc proves that.

Nothing you just wrote works as an argument against what I wrote. I acknowledged that we are having a good season, but if Mcclain or Dunlap were our coach we would still be having a good year. Teams that have experience and two future NBA players tend to do pretty well. And again, it was Bzdelik, not Tad Boyle who built this team. Im not saying that he not a great coach, just that we dont know yet.

Yeah it's a pretty sick ability to have.

But no I'm basing it off of what I saw under JB and I think his team's would have quit after being 22 down and 15 down going into halftime.

Yes Bzdelik got this team together (for the most part) and yes he was vital to putting the club on the path that they're on now, but how can you argue with the results? I mean, outrebounding UT, Mizzou (earlier in the year), KSU, CSU, etc. as well as scoring 58 in the 2nd half against the #5 team in the nation while also shooting exceptionally average at the line.. Bzdelik might have put these individuals together, but TB has gotten these guys to finally play together, enjoy their time on the court, and believe that they can win anywhere and against anyone. That is as much a part of coaching as anything, and Boyle knows how to spark a fire under the players when it needs to be done.

I agree with tg - JB's team wouldn't have come back from 22 down (in part because of the boring/slow offensive style), but also, from watching them play, they "hoped they would win, but they didn't believe it" - J. Embree..

Can't wait till we have ALL of Tad's players here in Boulder and see what the product is on the court, as well as when Ben Mills finally breaks 250lbs..

It's really unfair to completely discount Tad Boyle as if any coach could have achieved the same with this team. How about the incredible strides that Levi and Austin have made from last year to this year? No coaching involved? What about landing Andre Roberson? Any other coach would have landed someone at least as good? How about overcoming the loss of Shane for the season? Guys like McClain and Bzdelik who oversaw the Buffs getting regularly outrebounded by 10 or 15 a night would have turned that around even without Shane and beat teams like Texas and Kansas State on the glass this year?

I'm all for waiting until we have a body of work that is at least 3 years deep before feeling comfortable that we know what we have in Boyle, but giving him zero credit for this season is very unfair.

CU basketball is a whole different animal than it was under previous coaches. There's simply no denying that. The big difference is Tad Boyle. Bohn made the right hire. No questions asked.

I haven't given Boyle a pass yet, but generally Basketball head coaches impacts are a lot more immediate than in football. They still have a crucial stretch run remaining.

I do give the prior coaches credit for bringing in Burks, Higgins and the rest of the experienced guys on the team. The same coaches that left us with a roster that included Harris-Trunks, DuFault, and virtually nobody else of note with anything that resembles D-1 interior size. Roberson is doing a great job for a freshman but if this team had any legit upperclass depth inside his playing time would be much less. Mills had to burn his redshirt for the same reason.

What I do see is a team that is focused on winning, believes in themselves and each other, and believes in their coach. A Buzz team would not have come back from 22 down and based on their history would have given up the season by now. Pattons teams would be bickering and have been blown out of the gym with 3-4 league wins at this point.

The answer will be in the future and one season is not enough to tell but looking at how this team works along with guys like Roberson and Mills it is hard not to like what we see. Knowing that Tad can develop and motivate players along with the fact that he has already signed three of the top 12 players in California for next year and is in on a number of other quality recruits for the future leads me to believe that better times are in the future.

With the seniors leaving and a good possibility of losing Burks for next year as well could we have a bit of a drop off next season? Certainly possible but the long term future of the program looks better than it has in years and that falls squarely on Boyle.

Sure, the jury will be out on Boyle for a couple of years. We need to see him recruit and get his guys in place. But based on what most of us have seen, he appears to have everything it takes. For instance, despite having one of the smallest teams in the conference, we out rebounded the best rebounding team in the conference. That takes me back to the beginning of practice when he said his team would concentrate on blocking out and rebounding. Also, he's the first coach I can remember at CU who truly emphasizes running at altitude. Bzdelic ran a half court offense, not taking advantage of CU's home court. Finally, remember when Alec was contemplating leaving? What did Boyle do? He got on the first plane he could and went directly to Alec's home and sold himself to Alec's parents. Now, McClain wouldn't have had to because he was Burks' choice. I'm not sure what Bzdelic would have done in a similar circumstance. All I know is Bzdelic got out of town as soon as he could. What I do know is what Tad Boyle has done and I like what I see so far.

it's his first season.

For as great as Saturday's win was, let's not forget the losses at San Fran, OU, Baylor, etc.

I am sure there will be plenty of people upset if the Buffs drop Wednesday night's game at ISU.

JB's teams were more about taking time off the clock and it would have been difficult to catch up if they were behind by over 10 points. With Boyle, anything is possible. JB's princeton offense doesn't really take advantage of the altitude like Boyle's offense and being a good team on the road starts with being a very good team at home. The football team under Hawkins wasn't that good of a home team and it showed on the road while Boyle's team has won a few road games this season which is a sign of progress and a good sign because the Pac-12 road games won't be easy as well.

The idea that either McClain or Bzdelik would certainly have us in the same position as where we currently sit is highly questionable.

it's my opinion that this team with Boyle is by far a better rebounding team. part of it is "system" (where guys are on the floor) but i give Boyle credit. we're undersized, but we are in good position a lot of the time and in the bigger wins....we get our hands on the loose ball. Roberson is a big lift here, too, obviously. also play much better interior D. my beat my head against the wall frustration with some of the Bz games over his career were the Buffs would make a comeback in games but lacked the ability to guard the lane, get a defensive RB, or not foul to keep opposing posts off the glass. time and time again one of those 3 scenarios would play out on a big position late in games. get killed by 2nd chance points or giving up a new shot clock or being in the double-bonus the last 7 minutes of a game. you can't get THAT many stops when the other team is killing you inside.

i do think guys like Knutson and Dufault have developed nice on-ball skills that Bz did emphasize. Levi's turnaround and dribble-stop midrange J were certainly money against UT. one shot he makes, fading away, high off the glass was a thing of beauty. at the end of the Tech game, we force their guard (singletary or roberson) to a complete stop outside the 3 point arc, with time expiring....they basically have no time to reset the O since he's got no momentum to the hoop. that's moving your feet, and great help D. might have won us that game and preserved our chance to dance.

One thing about the UT game that bummed me out was us letting them make it close in the last minute and a half. We have kind of lacked that ability to put teams away at the end. Most notably, the aTm game. I still get depressed thinking about that one.

Agree to some extent but the refs did the horns some favors. That foul on Levi in 3 pt land was a horrible call. He should never have been called for that one. They do not get that call and we win by more than 5.

A lot of that is also our horrible FT shooting. We were 58% from the line I think. And most of our FT were from Higgins/Burks/Knutson, we should have been in the 80%+ range. Yes that is a very crazy number, but that is what they average from the line. We shoot anywhere near average that game and UT would have lost by 10+

Great point. Burks was like 12 of 20 from the stripe. He hit some huge FTs late in the game but had a very rough day from the line (not to take away from his big day which was huge).

so your predictions are correct and everybody else is wrong?

**** off

Oh sorry, I didint realize that you were a psychic.

Considering the talent on this team, stating that we would be having a good year even if Boyle wasint our coach is a very educated guess and a likely scenario. Again teams that have experience and two guys who will be in the NBA next year tend to do pretty well. Stating that we absolutley would not have beaten UT if Boyle was not our coach, as many of you have, is a totally baseless assumption and has no logic behind it.

I guess it depends on what your definition of a "good year" really is. You seem to want to give Boyle little credit for the strides this team has made and some posters actually posted some compelling arguments, especially about rebounding. You seem to think anyone having the opinion that Boyle has gotten more out of this team than McClain or Bzdelik would have is stupid or something, but it is really not that far-fetched.
