Brooks: CU Takes 'Aggressive' Aim At NIT (Just In Case)

Athletic Director Mike Bohn said Thursday that "significant and aggressive bids" have been made for both the NIT and WNIT tournaments, whose early rounds are played at campus sites. Bohn said the school is "reaching out to both."

However unlikely after Wednesday night's disappointing loss at Iowa State, Plan A remains the NCAA Tournament for the Colorado men's basketball team. But if the Buffs must go to Plan B for postseason play, athletic department officials already have begun lobbying for inclusion in the NIT, as well as the WNIT for the surprising CU women's team.

This makes sense.

I wonder how this all impacts the AD finances. Our settlement with the Big 12 was a set reduction in CU's payment, so does that mean that if we increase our share over what was expected through postseason hoops that we'll end up making more?

Or is it a matter of we get a fixed amount so the NIT and WNIT would be better financially since we'd get extra home games?

Just curious if anyone knew. No big deal.

All I know is NIT home games are GREAT with tickets inexpensive and GA everywhere. That's how it was for NIT games at UVA at least. Sat closest I've ever been (front row) in a sellout crowd for a 115-113 3OT UVA/Georgetown game. NIT can be excellent when they get the regional matchups going. I promise you CSU, UNC (if they lose in conference tournament) and other regional teams will lay in our path. These great crowds we've been getting in basketball are a great boost for the AD - and if attendance held up in pretty remarkable fashion under Hawkins, then Embree will most certainly get it going. The future is bright! OU women played in front of a sellout crowd (12k) against Baylor (whiteout game) last week - be nice if we could ever approach that support someday

who did they surprise?

it's only lately we've grown accustomed to sucking like this in basketball. honestly, i think Jeff Bzdelik made CU basketball a pariah. we were NEVER as bad as Jeff's teams....never in the 25 years i've been going to the "Keg". i think it's wrong when opinion leaders on this site act like we were "rescued" from being bottom feeders by the great Jeff Bzdelik. we used to be pretty good. we never, never finished as the worst team in the conference. see how Wake is doing? they were a tournament team a year ago? they won 8 games so far in a crap ACC?

Ceal's accomplishments are worth a mention.

I don't know what to think of Bzdelik, to be honest. His first and second years at CU were brutal, but in fairness the cupboard was nearly bare (with a big exception) when he arrived coming off that miserable 7-20 (3-13) campaign in Patton's final year. I hate the finesse aspect of his philosophy, but his style undoubtedly provided teams with less talent to put themselves in position to win. Even in the early days of Bzdelik, CU was losing games at KU by 5 and beat Baylor in the B12T. His style certainly puts a ceiling on how far you can go, even with talent. As for WF, it's crazy how bad they are. Gaudio had WF on a slow decline, but they made the second round. CU had played well early and lost close ones to Gonzaga, etc in Maui, but it then turned into another very disappointing season that only improved when CU was able to win a few at the end and nearly sneak into in the NIT, finishing 15-16 (6-10). For a school with the basketball tradition of WF to hire a coach that went 15-16, regardless of connections, is dumbfounding. This was expected to be a major rebuilding year for WF, but for the Deacs to finish 1-15 is not tolerable in W-S. You have to wonder if there was a disconnect with the players never buying into Bz's system. WF fans were very skeptical of the hire from the start. He'll be out of there next year unless the Deacs can get back in range of .500 in the ACC and postseason play. Serves him right for leaving such a favorable situation with tons of patience and support at CU.

CU women definitely have their tradition. You could claim it's somewhat "surprising" that they beat a top 15 OU squad and then went and won back to back games on the road in Columbia and Lincoln to become eligible. Very impressive after getting rid of their version of Hawkins. As for the men - they've had their moments, but there have unfortunately been too many other years with the Buffs fading into oblivion during the heat of conference play. We've got to improve on this two NCAA appearances since 1969 thing. Incredible how much the support has picked up starting last year and especially this year. We're blessed with having a perfect size arena - 11k +, but yet intimate and gets loud as hell when the Buffs are beating Texas or whooping the Corn to boost their NCAA hopes!!

Well, the women's team WAS picked to finish last in the pre-seasons coaches poll. So the end of the season surge is "surprising" in that respect, with them finishing either 8 or 9 in conference.

As for attendance, when the women were at their best in the national picture, in the mid 90's, their season averages were above 5000 and included a couple of sold-out crowds.

If we could get WBB and Volleyball there while continuing to grow MBB attendance & season tix (while adding donor seating), we might be able to turn a profit out of our court sports. And if the CU AD is able to do that, watch out. It changes the entire financial structure.

WBB is the big issue from what I have seen from the numbers on our court teams if we could just cut the losses back there it would help immensely.

I figured. But I was just looking at NCAA Volleyball attendance this morning. CSU, for example, averaged 2,180 per home match (13th nationally). A number of the programs that drew well are in our geographic area or our new conference. If we could match #10 Wichita State's 2,501 per home match we'd really improve our numbers there.

Also, it looks like if we could get our WBB attendance back around 5k per game then we'd be in the top 20 in the nation. That would be huge.

The other thing is that these things tend to take on a momentum of their own. Higher attendance attracts more media attention, which feeds more attendance. It also attracts better recruits, which leads to more wins, more televised games, and more overall media attention.
