Levi, Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year; Burks- First team; Higgins- Third Team

Levi got his due being named co-sixth man of the year for the Big 12 conference today.
He shares it with Quincy Acy, which really tells you how much Big 12 coaches respected Levi's shooting ability.

Alec Burks unanimous All-Conference First Team.

Cory Higgins named to the Third Team. This is Cory's third year being named to the third team. He definitely deserves better, but still great to see him honored. His contributions to this team on offense and defensive have been remarkable.

Self winning COY is lame. Of course I think Tad deserved it, but what about Mark Turgeon also? Aggies lost a lot from last year and managed to finish 3rd. Not a fan, but he did a great job this year.

how did tad not win?!?!?!?1

how did tad not win?!?!?!?1

Duh! This is the Big Texas conference. The now spurned Big Texas conference. They gave Burks credit because they couldn't ignore him. Higgins is graduating as is Levi. Hard to keep up your claims about being the greatest when your COY is in part of spurning you for another conference.

in all fairness, self did win a damn tough conference after losing aldrich, collins and henry. kansas is always loaded but most thought they were pretty overrated coming into the year.

So in many ways I understand why Tad did not win. While we are happy with what he has done so far and some of his recruiting, he inherited Burks and Higgins.

We also had embarrassing losses this year, which should not have happened.

Overall, I would sum it up as, he didn't do a 180 degree turn with this program. He moved it closer to where it needs to be.

After saying all this I also agree that there is no reason for the Big Tex conference care about the people who are leaving. The key now is to win the PAC-12 conference as newcomers.

Yeah but he always has the top talent to work with, Tad Boyle has brought CU from a non-NIT team to a NCAA tournament bubble team in a year, but what else would you expect from the Texas 12.

tad should have won

From a .500 team to a bubble team?!?! Holy shi*t, now way, OMG, Tad for president, Tad is our savior. Last year we only won 6 big 12 games, but this year thanks to Tad we won...wait for it......8!!!!! Nevermind that he only recruted one key player on the team, nevermind the fact that this team is more experienced then last years, all the credit must go to Tad. For all you Boyle haters what other coach could have taken a team with crappy players like Burks and Higgins and Knutson and Relphorde and it turned it into a bubble team? Its a joke that Self is the coach of the year. His team isint even ranked #1, they are #2. Tad cleary should have won. All hail Tad the man who has brought us from the depths of a .500 season all the way to the bubble, the man with the wisdom to start Burks and Higgins eveynight (honestly who else would think of that), the man who has led us on the trecherous journey from 6 conf wins to 8, the man who has lifted us with his pinky alone from the pits of hell to the highest peaks of heaven! To the bubble!!! All hail!

JB only had one win against a top 25 opponent compared to three this year, including a win over CSU, a sweep of KSU, coming back from 22 down to win, and a 10 point win over NU. It's not hard to coach when you have the best players availiable. Tad had 4 players to work with where KU has a bench that would be starting at CU probably.

You should also use a sarcasm font.

Wouldn't it have been easier to just say " I don't agree"

Read the rest of my post, douche. You know, the part where I presented the case that Turgeon deserved it. What's exciting about Self taking a team picked 2nd and finishing first?

KU was preseason #7 in the country. Color me unimpressed.

Exactly. Self replaces as few McDonalds burger-flipper..// uh, all-americans with a few more McAA's, ends the season about where everybody expected, and wins COY?

I think Turgeon did a better job, overall, with what he had. And frankly, so did Boyle. But that doesn't buy you votes in the bigtex conference.

Weren't they expected to be #2 in the conference? I can't think of a team (beside Nebraska) who had as high of a jump as CU did from predicted finish to final ranking. Texas A&M had a damn good jump too, especially getting into that #3 spot, which is tough.

Here is a copy of the poll:

1. Kansas State (10) 119
2. Kansas (2) 109
3. Texas 99
4. Baylor 96
5. Missouri 82
6. Texas A&M 69
7. Texas Tech 52
8. Oklahoma State 51
9. Colorado 46
10. Nebraska 31
11. Oklahoma 27
12. Iowa State 11

Agree with Tante. atm and the Buffs both took the biggest leaps from the preseason prognostication.

Anyone have a recap of the voting, i.e., who was listed as 2, 3, 4, 5 after Self?

One other thot -- I think Martin did good job, too. They were on the canvas with the ref at a count of 9. Early losses, suspensions, players leaving, etc. He did well to get them back in it late (gawd I hate to say that).

don't suppose it matters to us anymore, but fire Pat Knight for crying out loud. picked 7th and still underwhelm. nice.

he is still coaching the tourney.

Still gonna be interesting. Dad, the hof'er at the media table while son, the recently fired coach roams the bench. Gotta be a little uncomfortable for one or both. Ya know the play-by-play guy has to mention the coaching situation at some point.

Is it really fair to punish self for being a good recruiter? Part of beng a good coach is putting together a good team. Self did just that and all the power too him for it. This is not the award for the coach who did the most with the least, or the comeback coach of the year award, or the award for the coach whos team had the most suprising season, its the coach of the year award. Yes some of those things I just mentioned can lead to a coach winning the award, but the circumstances usually have to be fairly extraordianry like a coach battling cancer and leading his team a great season or a team with absolutley no talent that finnishes very high in the standings. Most of the time the award, rightfully so, goes to the coach with the best team. Self put together the best team in the Big 12 and they ended up winning the conf. End of story. No other coach did anything impressive enough tobeat him out for the award. This notion that any coach whos team is ranked highly before the season should be excluded from the award because their team was supposed to be good is ridiculous.

Who is punishing him? He didn't have any major injuries. The team picked to finish ahead of KU underperformed. They had a really nice regular season. But it was also a season that saw KU's nation-long home win streak end and its dominance at rival KSU's gym end. I'm fine with a coach of an elite team getting rewarded with a COTY when his guys achieve their potential. I'm just not sure that KU has. Turgeon, Boyle and Sadler are the ones whose teams over-achieved this season in the Big 12. I would have voted for Turgeon since he also had an impressive OOC performance while Sadler's guys played no one and Boyle's team took a while to gel with the new systems and overcoming the late injury to Shane Harris-Tunks.

And honestly, how much recruiting do you have to do at Kansas? I would think it would be the same principle as Miami in the 80's, NU in the 90's, and USC in the early 2000's.

I also think Self leaves a little to be desired in terms of developing his talent, which is really what he's supposed to be doing. He's a good recruiter, and a good coach, but idk how much better he really makes his players over their stays at Kansas.
