Burks/Higgins - why is Burks considered so much better?

I have to be honest, when I watch them play, the two both seem to be pretty good. One wears #11, the other #10. I sometimes have a difficult time telling them apart. Why is Burks considered so much better than Higgins?

And yes, this means I have been watching basketball - a little. Probably not enough, though, eh?

the difference in athletic ability. Burks is far more athletic, is taller, longer, maybe quicker, etc. He is also not nearly as polished as higgins. Higgins is a complete player, but lacks the athletic ability. NBA teams are drafting on burks's potential to polish his game to match his tools.

Burks has much better body control after contact, has the ability to create his own shot and is much better at finishing around the basket. You are getting confused with who is a better college basketball player versus who can be a better pro, remember the NBA is all about isolation and top 10 dunks and not about basketball.

By far the 1 aspect of his game that makes him the potential lottery pick that he is....His body control in the air driving to the hoop literally brings flashes of Jordan to my mind at times

Taller, quicker first step, bigger hands, longer arms, better ups, and the ability to twist his body while seeming to hang in the air.

Basically, it's upside and the ability to do the spectacular.

Cory's a great college player and may find a home in the NBA, but he will never be a star. Alec has the potential to be a Scottie Pippen type player.

Higgins has the better 15+ ft jumpshot... why Burks needs to stay, to work on it...

I disagree, his shot is very flat, so in the NBA he is more likely to get blocked and he has less room for error with the low trajectory.

Accuracy statistics at this level disagree. Higgins has developed the pull up jumper to a science.

too bad he can't play in college forever.

agreed. but sacky is asking why burks is so much better, cause he has only seen them play in college, and higgins, due to his more polished game, looks better at many things than burks does. Maybe his "flat" shot (not sure I agree with you all that much on this) would make a difference at another level, but when they play together, they don't look that far apart as far as contributions go.

Higgins will earn a living playing basketball.

If he gets into the right situation he could be a contributing bench player for a number of years in the NBA. If not he gets to be an upper level player overseas. He has enough of a range of skills that he will get a chance in the league, I would guess that his dad knows enough people to insure that he gets a pretty long look someplace. If it doesn't work out will be in demand in Europe.

we already answered it, it is his athletic ability and Burks ability to play in the stupid isolation NBA offenses. Higgins is a nice player and may make a NBA roster if he can change his game, but Burks can make NBA coaches drool when they swing the ball around the perimeter to him and he drives past the defender, draws a foul, contorts and then drops it in for two. The NBA isn't about pull up jumpers or making the "smart" play, it is about athletic ability.

And that, in a nutshell, is why I much prefer the college game to the NBA game. In fact, I can't remember the last time I watched more than a couple minutes of an NBA game.

watch the Nuggets, they play like a college team with NBA talent.

This game is a good example of the difference. Against a good, long defense, Higgins has had to settle for awkward jump shots and floaters. Burks has been able to blow by Alabama's guards - even when getting shadowed/doubled by another defender - and get to the rim for some nice finishes. Higgins is good but Burks is pro material.
