Buffs' Burks still weighing options

oh man. torture.
"The reasons I would come back is I like playing college basketball, I like being at Colorado, you only get this chance to be in college once," Burks said. "I'd like to experience it to the fullest and play another year with Shannon and Dre. They're my two dudes, I hang around them all the time, and those are the reasons why I'd come bac

glad he is thinking like this.

I almost wish he would make his decision and let us fans move on. Keeping track of what he is thinking/doing for the next month is going to be frustrating.

I for one prefer that to the nothing that occurs after the spring game :huh:

I want him to make a good choice. Yes it would be incredible if he came back one more year, but if he is a top 10 pick he absolutely needs to go to the NBA. I don't really see a lot of shooting guards that are going to surpass him although someone like Jeremy Lamb has potential. I would just hate to see him go from a top 10 pick to a late 1st because he stays and extra year. I don't know how good the 2012 draft class is, but this is like a perfect storm for Alec.

but if he is a top 10 pick he absolutely needs to go to the NBA.

Why does he need to go if he's a top 10 pick? This is not like the NFL where top 10 pick gets money that will set him up for life. Assuming Burks goes in the 8-12 range he would get 3 years guaranteed at "only" about $2 million per year, and he may not even go that early and if there is a lockout he wouldnt get paid anyways. The money is not going to be any better in next years draft but by coming back and developing his game he will be better prepared once he reaches the NBA which would increace the likelihood that he would turn into a good NBA player and get a large payday down the road. He should be making the decision based on whether or not he wants to go and how prepared he thinks he is, not based on where a mock draft says he is going.

JRK - looks like he can expect 4.5-6.0 million guaranteed, or stay and risk getting none at all? it is a no brainer.

the number one reason is that he is walking away from a pretty decent contract as a top 10 pick. Lets say he is number 8, he would make $2.2 million his 1st year and then 2.36 in his 2nd year and 2.53 in his 3rd. Granted these numbers are for the current CBA so they are about as accurate as Kyle Orton in an all out blitz, but it give you some idea of what he is walking away from. This is guaranteed money versus the risk of injury and his stock dropping significantly or maybe next years class is amazing and he gets pushed down. Based on the current CBA here is WHAT he is guaranteed to make:

7.103 = 8th pick
4.8 = 15th pick
3.77 = 20th pick

now that is a pretty hefty drop. Now not saying he is going to go #8 or even #10 this year, but we do know that is his stock drops so does his paycheck. Right now he is unanimously the #1 SG prospect in the draft, which we can't be certain is true for next year.

The 2nd reason is we need to get more Buffs in the NBA. I'm pretty sure that we only have 1 active buff in the NBA. These kids need to know that going to Colorado they will:

1 - be visible to NBA scouts (new PAC:12 tv contract)
2 - can use their CU experience as a stepping stones to the pros (hey didn't Alec Burks go from an lightly recruited player to a top 10 draft pick a few years ago after two years in Colorado)

The worst possible thing is if he gets hurt and his career is over without a shot in the NBA, now I know that if he is like me, then he is gone, but maybe he is more like you and will stay.

How would he risk getting nothing at all? Is the NBA going to suddenly dissapear after this year?

1. Injury
2. Subpar year
3. Deeper draft class next year.

Maybe not nothing at all but he could definitely hurt his draft stock by coming back

Denver Post has a new article up. Two quotes from Burks that dont make much sense:

1. Potential lockout has no bearing on his decision. Does he realize that a lockout means that he wont play and he wont get paid?

2. If he declares he will hire an agent. Why not test the waters and see if you want to stay in the draft or not?

Are you trying to say that Burks would be more usefull to CU by bringing the program publicity then he would be by actually playing for us?

no saying him coming back and getting injured and not playing in the NBA would hurt CU.

You might offer him your services as a consultant.

I dont know that Burks is ever goign to have a chance to go much higher than #8 in almost all circumstances he's going to lose money especially as some other highly rated players are staying in school. Look at Roby he came back instead of capitalizing on a second round grade.

Ya, obviously. He could also improve it though.

How can you improve being the #1 SG in the country?

Jake Locker says hi. Matt Leinart says hi. Luck should be the #1 QB next year, but he could also get beat up this year without his OL. No where to go but down or at #1.

People say staying would help, but it hurt Roby. The NBA game is so different from the college game that he'd be better off playing full-time 40hrs/week (or more if he really desire it or less if he doesn't) than having to stay here, go to class and do homework while playing when he gets the chance. People that love the NBA know that rookies tend to bottom out towards the end of the season due to the extreme length of the season when compared to college. No amount of staying in college will get you prepared for 80+ games.

College definitely is more fun and I like college BB better than the NBA, but saying no to the draft and hoping that you improve your stock is stupid except for the 2nd-late round picks out there. Burks likes contact and he could easily go down this upcoming year. Not worth it. He gone and I wish him well. Give back to the Buffs by playing in the offseason here or giving cash or participating in fundraisers, or all 3.

I'm not gonna question/speculate on it as I'll support his decision 100% either way, and could certainly be persuaded to both sides of the argument

Certainly many pro's & con's to both decisions

WTF kind of response is that?

Basically that $6 million dollars vs. 1 more year of college playing basketball and being the stud in the most beautiful place in the world is a Wash in my mind....just glad i'm not in his shoes and don't have to make the decision (well...I'd gladly like to be in his shoes, just not having to make the decision :smile2:)

I think you and most everyone else on this board would be swimming in his shoes...

If he's a lottery pick, he really needs to take that opportunity.

Outside the lottery, my advice to a sophomore would be to play another year, try to improve your draft stock, and get closer to a degree with that 3rd year so that it's easier to go back later when the pro career is over. You don't want to be in your mid 20s/late 20s/early 30s with no marketable skills hoping that the money you made and lived large on during your pro career will last you for the next 50 years. So it's important that if you're going to go to the NBA before earning a college degree that it's a big, guaranteed payday.

far to well reasoned and rational for this board.

If he comes back with hopes of improving his draft stock, then his jumper and defense need noticeable improvement. Scoring wise he'd probably need to approach Jimmer type numbers.

he'd also be playing on a team minus Cory Higgins and Levi Knudson.....and be the "man", double teamed on the perimeter with a lot of physical hand checks from a lot of nobodies, makes sense to go now.

pimp the buffs at the next level AB.
