Recruiting quarterbacks

I'm curious as to the methodology behind quarterback recruiting. CU currently has 4-5 guys that we're seriously going after. If CU gets a verbal from one of these guys, do we pull the offers from the others? Do we keep the offers, but discontinue active recruiting? Do we continue to recruit the others, with the idea that a backup is always needed?

QB is a unique position on the football field. He touches the ball on every play, and is usually in for 100% of the offensive plays. The backup rarely sees the field unless there's an injury or a blowout. It's not like running back or WR, where you can be one of three recruits in a class and still have a reasonable expectation for playing time. If you're one of two QB's in a class, chances are you will be fighting it out with that other guy for playing time. The loser may never play a down of football for the rest of his life.

I'm guessing the highly recruited QB's typically commit pretty early in the process. Like by the end of June. Is that accurate? Is there reason to be concerned about a recruit changing his mind and leaving you holding the bag if you've stopped recruiting other quarterbacks?

Btw, there's a top QB from Memphis we've jumped in on. Update & profile in a bit.

To start with we absolutely need at least one quality QB this cycle. Ideally you have a QB in every class so as a guy graduates the Jr. and the Soph. step up to battle for the position. No matter how good a job you do with recruiting you are going to get some guys who never quite develop to the point you want so you end up with some multi-year starters.

Problem for this team is that due to prior issues at the position the roster is off-track. You have a Sr. in Hansen who looks ready to do the job. You have a Jr. in Burnette but he looks like he will not contend and be an emergency guy. You then skip Soph. and go to Hirschmann as a RS Fr. who looks to be talented but doesn't have the history to say he is the answer and a true freshman in Dorman who has the pedigree but wasn't highly thought of enough to be a target of a lot of other programs.

Bottom line, normally you shoot for one high quality guy. If something happens you fill in later with a JC but count on other guys in the progression to cover. For this squad I think that even if you get one top quality guy if you have a shot at a second you take him. QB is to important to have a hole in the roster at the position.

It's true that if you sign two top guys one is likely to never become the guy but quality guys are willing to compete and believe that the other guy is the one who will end up sitting. You also might end up with a position change like the WR we are getting from Georgia who went to Georgia as a fairly highly rated QB. A lot of times the HS QB is the best athlete on his team so he can adjust to another position.

QBs tend to commit early and it usually causes a chain reaction after the first blue chip (like Pike today) makes his decision. Teams generally stop recruiting at the position after they get a commit unless they are planning on taking a JUCO as well. There are exceptions where guys switch late, but most of the time the teams can see it coming. If we get a blue chip QB to commit, I really doubt we will have to worry about him decommitting. The depth chart is very favorable for any top flight QB prospect.

I just did an update on the seven (eight?) quarterbacks CU has offers on ... http://www.cuatthegame.com/2011/recruiting-prospects-2012/

It seems like the Buffs are offering some high level prospects (finally!), but that it would be tough to say that CU is the leader on any of them.

If CU receives a commitment from any one of their known current offers, I would bet that they would continue to recruit the others, in case there is a change of heart in early February ...

Seems like we'll be waiting for awhile on Houston and Miles. Morin doesn't seem to like us very much  Are a lot of P12 schools waiting on that new Jake Locker? Lundquist? Maybe once he commits, same with Kiel, things will start to happen with the 2nd tier guys.

We recruit all of them. And just because you read it from a recruiting site, that doesn't mean that all the QB we are recruiting have solid offers. If we get two guys to commit, we will most likely take the guy that is rated higher by the coaching staff. And if end up losing the player before signing day, there is nothing we can do about that, that is it the gamble of recruiting.

quarterbacks take the hike from the center and then either hand the ball off, pass the ball or run with the ball.

What happens is, the center has the ball first and the quarterback will say hike. That's when the center puts the ball into the hands of the quarterback. So what I do is I start tackling the quarterback, unless he gives the ball to someone else in which case I try to tackle that person.
