Colorado High Schools, which are good sources of talent? Which are overrated?

Over the past few years we have paid a lot of attention to the question of Mullen players. Some of them have turned out to be good D1 quality players, others have turned out to be bust. We have also dealt with the idea that Mullen players are inclined against going to CU and prefer to go out of state.

Now we are starting to see a lot of the same stuff with the Valor Christian players. I fully expect Valor to recruit itself into contention for the top level of Colorado HS football. At the same time I am also getting the impression that I would rather CU focus it efforts on players from other schools. The Valor players are hard to evaluate because of the talent around them and the hype they seem to be getting. I look at Kozan as a good player but not worth the drama and potentially overrated. We all got excited about Berglund then fortunately he decommited and went to Kansas where he has been a drama case.

On the other hand there have been some schools where we have consistently gotten talent that has come through for us. Columbine kids seem to be very levelheaded and turn out to be players at the next level. Ponderosa kids seem to not play games in the recruiting cycle and turn out well.

Question. Which Colorado high schools are the most reliable sources for us to recruit from and which should we be carefull of.

A good new source of talent has been Chaparral down in Parker for o-line. Jack Harris, Brenden Austin, and now Shane Callahan have all come out of Chaparral since Voght was hired in 2006.

I don't think that it's fair to label a prospect based on what high school he went to as far as being careful of him.

But most of the in-state talent we're going to find is going to be from the metro (Adams, Arapahoe, Denver, Douglas and Jefferson Counties) and from the successful 4A and 5A programs in those counties.

I think it would be better to not focus on schools, but on leagues. The Centennial League has turned out literally hundreds of quality D-1 football players over the years. Until recently, the Centennial League included Boulder, Fairview, Creek, Mullen, Smoky Hill and Overland. The league has had schools come and go over the years - Boulder and Fairview are both gone now - but it seems that it's always the premier league in CHSAA. Jeffco is also very solid, with Arvada, A-West, Columbine, Chatfield & Pomona.

Not trying or interested in labeling a kid base on his HS. There have been some schools where we have gotten some kids who have been great and had other kids from the same school who have messed us around or been very disapointing.

I am not suggesting that we ever rule a kid out because of his school or take a marginal kid just because of the school he comes from. At the same time I have noticed that kids from some schools tend to have very good work ethics and/or tend to be very fundamentally sound while others tend to look great in HS in part because of surrounding talent or being more physically advanced and tend to top out early and not develop as well. I have my opinions of which schools fall into these catagories but am curious about what others think.

in the 80's longmont was a place to look. i just cant remember like i could.... but... i wanna say the rafferty (sp?) kid and the coyle kid were from longmont. then there is beikert and clint moore. also, i think there may be one or two others. perhaps i am confusing some people.

LHS used to be a football factory. it is no longer. since Paul Shoemaker in the fall of '91.... im not sure of any good prospects to come out of LHS. if memory serves... had PS committed to CU, they would have passed on koy detmer. PS went with BYU early and CU got Koy. PS did his mormon mission and played a game or two for byu but never did much on the field. PS is still a friend of mine to this day and is still stupid fit and active.

since Gordon Cramer quit as the LHS head football coach, things have changed greatly. they would put a kid or two into CU once every few years. or at least, it seemed when i was growing up.

still would have kicked the **** out of any denver school when i was there though. that is all that matters. i would have laughed my ass off from the bench!!! :smile2:

Considering the above objective statements, especially how sack brought up the traditional centennial league powers, I think the woolfork led overland trailblazers are going to be a program to start focusing on again for recruiters.

The overated ones are

Cherry Creek

Who was the last player from mullen to make an impact for any school?. i believe the only 1 lately would be Bo Scaife, so why does everyone think we should do whatever it takes to get kids from mullen.

Nolan Brewster.

I think that Pine Creek High School is underrated, and doesnt get much love in state. They have gone undefeated in the regular season for the past 3 years. Have made it to state quarterfinals and semifinals recently, they just dont have the talent currently to compete with the big denver schools. Would not be surprised to see them become a powerhouse in the near future.

I think evaluating by league is a better option, too. In the time of open enrollment, a good coach can change things quickly. While Douglas Cty is still competitive, as pointed out above, Chapparel is pumping out a lot of good players.

It'll be interesting to see the effects of Valor Christian on the rest of the Highlands Ranch schools. In the same vein, I don't think the Denver Prep league had a bcs signee this year outside of Bishop from East. In the past decade it seemed, TJ then South, then Montbello and maybe East most recently horded any of the remaining prospects. Currently, it seems the vast majority of the good Denver prospects are at Mullen.

I'll echo what one of the posters above said about Woolfork at Overland. It'll be interesting to see if he can build that program.

Most of their individual players go Division II though

I only think because they dont get many BCS looks. Im sure that would change if they could start making it to the state finals each year but still, going undefeated, there has to be some good talent there.
