Recruit Trip - looking for suggestions of where to stay and eat!

We're coming out for a quick trip to check out the university. Any recommendations on where to stay that is not too expensive and a good place to eat that will feed a big guy? Locals always know the best places to go!

We really need to put together a "Visitors Guide" on AllBuffs. :smile2:

If you're trying not to spend a fortune on the hotel, that pretty much rules out downtown near Pearl Street. You probably want to stay in Boulder so I'll focus there, but there are a bunch of options one town over in Louisville.

In Boulder, a lot of people choose the Millenium Harvest House. It's probably the easiest walk to Folsom Field / Dal Ward Offices and the rest of campus. A lot of people like the Best Western Golden Buff Lodge. One of the best breakfast places in Boulder (The Buff) is on the property and it's walking distance from a lot of restaurants and shopping. Campus is walkable from there, but it's uphill and could be a bitch if you're not used to the altitude and it hits you hard for whatever reason. Should be fine, though.

I'm sure others will chime in, but those are good options to start with. Also, CU-Boulder has a section on the university web site for planning your visit: http://www.colorado.edu/visit/planning/index.html

Please let us know if you have any specific questions. Best places for different types of food, tourist things that could be fun, spots to get a decent haircut, whatever. Hope you have a great visit. Weather's supposed to be pretty typical this week (mid to high 80s). One thing to keep in mind is that with how sunny it is here, it often feels a bit warmer than the temp.

The Quality Inn-Boulder Creek is a nice, small hotel that offers free breakfast in the AM (eggs, bacon, waffles-not just a muffin and a tiny cup of juice!) and is easy walking distance to Dal Ward (www.qualityinnboulder.com). Reasonably priced, a few out-of-town players stayed there for Spring Game and liked it a lot. Golden Buff and the Outlook Hotel are both priced well, too. Nothing fancy, but nice and clean and good locations. Harvest House would be pricier but the closest hotel to Dal Ward (right across the street if you go out the back door). Harvest House is my favorite game day hotel!

Tons of great places to eat on Pearl Street Mall, pretty much anything along the mall will be good food and good atmosphere/people watching which is one of the best things about Boulder! Pasta Jay's on the west end of the mall is always a CU favorite, nice patio and good food. Old Chicago is always a good standby, typical pizza and burgers, but great location. The Rio Grande is good Mexican food, one block off Pearl Street. We were up in Boulder on Friday and the old Tom's Tavern (10th and Pearl) has been re-opened as Salt Bistro. Their patio was hoppin' for lunch-maybe a little fancy-schmancy for teenage boys, but I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Tom's Tavern burgers and they still have those on the Salt menu!

Are you coming for any of the camps, or just a general CU student visit? If you're coming for Camp, say hi! We'll be there on both Friday and Saturday. My son is Clay Norgard, he'll be with the LB's. Regardless of the reason, enjoy your visit to Boulder--it's gorgeous this time of year!

Just a quick hint for your visit. The sun is very strong here and because of the breezes off the mountains it feels cooler than it really is often. Coming in from a lower altitude and an area with more humidity many people dehydrate easily and get headaches or otherwise feel bad. They blame it on the altitude but it is often due to lack of moisture in your body. Carry a water bottle and drink from it even if you don't feel thirsty. You will notice that a lot of people around town are doing the same.

Also be sure to wear a hat (preferably one that has more than a visor in front) and use sunscreen.

Hope you have a great visit and decide that this is a place you want to come back to often for another 4-5 years.

Really depends on whether you are standing in the sun or shade and how strong the breeze is.

In winter there are times that it's 35 degrees outside and by about 11am I don't need a coat, just a sweater or sweatshirt. Yesterday, the gauge on my car said 67 degrees when we were heading to breakfast early morning and my wife pulled her lightweight, cotton cardigan off and made me turn the AC on. I don't think it ever hit 80 for the day, but we were all wearing shorts and t-shirts.

I do agree that it's easy to get caught with a sunburn on a day you wouldn't expect it because it feels cooler than sunburn weather when there's a strong breeze coming off the mountains.

A CU logo on that will help prevent sunburns! If you need to feed a big kid, take him to Pasta Jays.

We're coming in late Thursday and will visiting the campus all day Friday. My son won't be attending the camp, he's a lineman and the CU Lineman camp was today and we were already commited to the camp at the University of Washington otherwise we would have taken our visit this weekend. Sounds like Pasta Jay's is the place to go, others made that recommendation as well, so it sounds like a winner! Next trip we'll make it to Tom's Tavern, sounds great! We always try to find the local "Pubs" on these trips as we fiqure at some point we'll be repeat customers once a commitment is made. Nothing like a good pub burger!

Thank you for the information and we'll seek Clay out while we're there Friday. We have a couple other players traveling with us that will be attending the camp so I'll ask Coach Marshall to introduce us all!

Pasta Jay's it is! I just checked out the menu and it's perfect. Feeding a 6'7, 320 lineman take s a few carbs and lots of protein! Thanks for the great suggestion! (We'll need to pick up the CU hat while we're there!)

Enjoy man. Its worth showing up a little early and walking around Pearl as well. That place is fun to walk around.

Just a heads up. Tom's Tavern unfortunately closed a couple years ago when Tom passed away. The replacement is very good however, called Salt - although it is more of a high-end joint.

Ah, thank you for the clarification - I misread the response although it's very clear! Salt Bistro, I'll put that in my notes for future reference but will hit up Pasta Jay's on Friday.

Also, if you make it down to the west end of pearl street, a great pub is the West End Tavern. Really good pub food and maybe the best rooftop deck in Boulder with views of the front range mountains as well as downtown. I think it was featured on that Man vs Food show.

West End is a favorite from back in the day, but it was my understanding that new developments now block the front range views, no?

Jays has fed many a 6'7 320 lineman. Mmmmmm...Jays chicken pargm, stuffed shells, pesto pizza

The rooftop at West End is definitely not what it once was, not only can you not really see much of the mountains, I can look at you from my office window. Creepy. Surprisingly, the Lazy Dog probably has the best views for a rooftop, though the Rio's roof is pretty nice if you don't mind eating slop.

Shouldn't you be working on the UHC?

DoWork, how was the trip?

while the establishment SUCKS, the absinthe house has the best rooftop deck. $1 session lagers and smoking permitted? i'm in heaven.

Wyo, I judge all other pargm by Jay's. how do you think I got to 320 there? I fell of the tangerine truck in 1988 weighing in at a trim 270.

We leave this Thursday and will be on campus all day Friday, the 17th. We fly out the next day to LA to visit UCLA for a Saturday visit so I'll let you know on Sunday! I know the air will be cleaner in Boulder than LA, that's a fact!

You are gonna enjoy that drive into boulder. At the top of the last hill before you get into town, you can pull off the road and take a picture. I suggest you do that. It makes for a great shot. Then, when you are driving up to UCLA, take that picture out and compare the two. :smile2:

One of the best views in all of the US. Still gives me goosebumps when I drive over that hill.

Should be great weather this weekend and enjoy the trip! Boulder is a fantastic town!

It may be one of the best views of a city, but I love the view on 70 when you pop up over the hill before Evergreen (or maybe it is after) and the bridge frames the mountains---is a very cool picture.

I know, I fell off the "buckin' horse" at 260# and left at 305! I haven't been back to Boulder since and now I'm back to 250! Would love to live in Boulder again though.
