CU's recruiting effort to date is one of the worst in the country per Bleachers R

If LOI day were next week I would be worried. February is a long way away.

He also missed Dillon being a 4* not a 3*.

Things are far from great right now for the Buffs but I look back to the kids that this staff turned in the last two weeks before LOI day last year and it takes the edge off.

Of course on the other hand if it wasn't this, Walk would just find something else to complain about.

The day I listen to Bleacher Report for analysis.... They just compile random ass top ten lists. Sometimes they are fun, but nothing should be taken from them.

I don't think he's complaining, I think he's glad.

Does anyone think we are doing good at recruiting this year? I am very disappointed.

Usually they are at least funny, but this is a set of disjointed comments/pics and the dumbest thing I've read on that site. Do they do their own ratings? Cuz Dillon is a 4 star guy... Do they consider themselves journalists? Like, do they get paid for that ****? I mean, the grammar is so bad...

The complaints about recruiting "this year" are such a joke.....Apparently people very easily put the HaLk years behind them (and I don't blame them)....but truth be told, recruits can't put the recent history lessons behind them and yet we're still battling and have landed more kids at this point than the previous regime ever did.

The problem is that everyone just had these outlandish expectations that EB/Embree were going to come in and start signing the same caliber talent as was rumored about 10 years ago...and we were gonna be in the mix for every 5* recruit because they are "proven" recruiting machines. Trouble is....you have to have a respectable program to recruit to in order to get to that point, and guess what folks, outside of how Beautiful Boulder is, not much more to sell in the Pac 12 which also has beautiful desitnations now with equal to greater caliber educations and football programs that haven't sucked for 6 years straight. For everything that's great about the Pac move, we've all been blinded to the fact that we're coming in as the very bottom of that totem pole, and until we show some success on the field those perceptions will not change.

So major kudos for what this staff has been able to accomplish thus far as it's a pretty steep hill they're having to climb.

The only thing Bleacher Report is good for is pictures of WAGs in lingerie & bikinis.

Most people complaining about early recruiting on this site have realistic expectations. I have seen no one say Embree and his staff need to be fired, but rather they need to better. Why would anyone disagree with that?

And again, why is the Hawkins era the one and only standard for early recruiting? The new staff damn well has to be better than Hawkins in that arena because it is nearly impossible to be worse.

I think it's fair to be disappointed esp. when the CO guys go elsewhere, but I think to have a class developing in the same way that Oregon's or Stanford's are requires the same expectation of success by the recruit, i.e., we need to show it on the field. We're not there yet, and we don't get the same exemption that USC and Notre Dame get.

I disagree and think we are doing about the level we should expect. Good recruiters, but we are selling air at this point in time. Colorado hasn't been relevant in 10 years and has been embarrassed regularly on National TV in many of those years. The staff includes a first time Head Coach with no coordinator experience and a first time OC with no previous coordinator experience. Until these guys show a turnaround on the field, they are selling air.

Throw in that some of the early commits are likely to get upgraded as we go thru the process (I'm basing that on our staff being in early on lots of guys who have blown up given a little more exposure and I expect more of that). In fact, I'm more worried about keeping some of these guys.

The real disappointment for me is the lack of in-state kids picking CU. I blame that on the last 10 years of crappy football, the sex scandal, and our local media partly. But mostly I blame that on the complete lack of ties that our population has to this state. Most of these kids have not one single tie to CU and in most cases grew up rooting for other schools their parents went to, or the states they came from (Michigan for example). Kozan, Connors, Callahan, the TE going to Oregon.... none of these kids have a link to CU. When my own kids have graduated, all of their classmates were totally focused on getting out of Colorado. It's the hip thing to do in Colorado culture. Funny thing is that most of them didn't last a year out of state, but I regress.

If we had hired a big name such as Nick Saban, we'd lock these kids up. But asking an unproven no-name staff to lock up these kids without a track record given the above is unrealistic in almost every case. But there's some time between now and LOI day.

i bet if Dillon signed with FSU or Ohio State (had offers, and sounded like Miami and Oregon offers were in the works) he'd still be 4*. additionally, early commits often get the short stick star treatment.

It is the middle of summer, we just finished some of the worst years in CU football history and we have 4 verbals and people are upset with the recruiting effort?

Last year the season was over before we had 4 verbals. The fact that we have high level talent even considering CU is about all we could hope for.

Would it be great for every 4* and 5* to have CU in the lead, sure. I would love to lock up the top instate talent, and guess what, there is still a chance to make that happen by getting players in for visits during the season.

The reality is today's 17 year old has not seen CU do anything since they were 11.

I think we are already way ahead of what my expectations were.

It's 5 verbals (Crowder, Dillon, Henington, Norgard, Thomas) along with adding 2 guys this summer for the 2011 class (Cotner, Goodson) and 2 senior transfers to compete this year (Brundage, Gray).

We need to be at about 10 verbals before the season starts, but I can't say that we haven't seen a lot of work done through June. We need to get moving on the 2012 class, though, and start getting some more guys on board.

way more verbals this early than I remember, which is hurting. But it's not over yet by any means. The earlier the verbals the more flimsy they are often times. Does Callahan stay committed if Auburn finishes last in their conference and the NCAA probe becomes more public? You get the idea.

Secondly, USC continues to string guys along, which has a trickle down effect. IMO, even the 10 that Buffnik proposes is way high. We need to be talking to a lot of guys. I think we will have a great class but it will be a late class. Dec, Jan and Feb. BTW, I think it's still a very good class even if we don't win a lot of games and a great class if we go bowling. Class will be better than all but 1 in the last 8 years.

CU is in a position where guys have to have their options narrowed by USC, UW, Oregon, A&M, etc filling up their positions. This is happening rapidly but will continue well into the season.

Uh sex scandal.............can I get the details on that? LMBO! But seriously I agree with some of the comments on this thread, it takes time. Honestly with a semi new staff and moving to a new conference where west coast kids have their dream schools picked out at birth, the kids you are going to get now are ones that see the big picture. Kind of a TCU, cinderella scenario. Being a sleeper school that quietly pulls in quality kids isn't a bad thing. And will make the victory just that much sweeter when it happens. From talking to teammates and kids at camps they run alot on name recognition right now and not as much on research as they should. Being in Texas, kids here mostly put credit in Texas and CA schools. They don't really research many East Coast schools just assuming that the level of competition isn't as strong.

So true..........so true. To add to the point, CU is also in a position to catch the sleepers or underrated. One of the funny things about A&M is that they are so hard pressed to keep up with Texas that their class is almost full and leaves NO room for late bloomers in this upcoming season. Mark my words, its gonna come back to bite them.

Hey! The voice of reason has no place in this thread!

Another part of this is that at this point a lot of kids are falling in love with an image, what they have seen on Sportscenter or in other media. As time goes by and a lot of these kids actually take a closer look at what each school offers many will change their ideas.

A lot of schools that have been very high profile in recent years thus grabbing kids attention have some serious drawbacks if you look closer. In many cases top position coaches have moved on, in others head coaches are likely to leave for the NFL or for other college jobs. What a kid sees right now may and probably will be very different in 3 years.

Another factor is going to be the kids who are already on the roster and those who are committed. Kids have to look at what their prospects are for seeing the field in the near future. If the school they are considering has two highly rated prospects at his same position in the previous years class and another highly rated kid committed this year, the kid has to ask how much of a priority is his development going to be. How much personal attention is the staff going to give him, are they going to try to find him field time to develop him.

As kids look more closely at CU they are going to see a lot of opportunity with a highly qualified coaching staff with experience at the highest levels and a staff that is coming in with a clean slate. They don't have prior commitments to a bunch of kids, everyone is going to get a fair shot at seeing the field.

To some kids this stuff doesn't matter. They have dreamed all their life of wearing a certain uniform or telling people that they are signing with a top 10 team. Others are going to look at the entire package, what is the best situation for them both on the field and in their lives academically, socially, etc..

The lucky kids have a parent, a coach, or someone else they can trust who has their best interest at heart to help guide them through this process. Some kids start the critical evaluation process early and have time to make a decision based on what is really important. Others start later and can change their mind in the process. Every year we see kids decommit as they get closer to LOI day and go another direction.

A lot of kids end up signing with a school and then later realizing that in retrospect they would have made a different choice. Some stick with the school, other transfer or more sadly just don't finish, dropping out. Of course a lot make less that their best decision but still make a good experience out of it. If a kid is willing to work hard and have a good attitude he can make the best out of a variety of decisions and have a great experience but it still wouldn't be as good as it could be.

Nice post MtnBuff. I agree with what you said. As far as kids leaving school because of not getting playing time I really think CU has to look to get some of those players to transfer here like they did with Toney Clemons. There is usually a hand full of guys who are moving around every year and I think that would really help boost the program if we were able to take some 2nd chances on kids and turn them around.

I don't mind that...to a point. We don't want to become too reliant on 2 year players or JUCO players. Once you start it is hard to get a consistent team fielded.

I think a bigger issue is to talk to these kids in the weeks leading up to LOI day. Tell them to look at the roster the school already has and the commit list.

The school may have promised the kid the moon, remind them that they made those same promises to every other kid at the position. Simple question do you want to be a scout squad player for the next 3-4 years before you even get a shot or do you want to come in, redshirt, then have a chance to break the two-deep and maybe be a multi-year starter for a team on the rise. Oh and by the way, the head coach at the school you are looking at has been there 5 years which is longer than he has ever held a job in his life, what are the odds he or his staff will even be there by the time you are a jr.

I don't think JUCOs will ever be a reasonable option for CU because of the problems in getting them in to school. We may pick up a select one or two a year but admissions is to much headache for the benefit gained.

I just got a truck load of these.

The recruits should be pouring in now.
