Rivals: Interview With Linda Lappe

The new facility is going to mean so much for that program as well as volleyball. Having the coaching offices, training facilities, nice locker rooms and extra court takes it to a new level. Recruits want to be a part of that. And the players/coaches also react to that stuff by feeling a higher level of responsibility to go with the larger commitment. The bar has been raised.

Lappe made some good coaching hires this offseason and brought in a very good recruiting class. There's a lot of momentum building. We have a real opportunity to become Stanford's biggest challenger within the conference.

Nik,

What are realistic expectations for this upcoming season? We lose some good players, but can we make another NIT appearance?

Someone like BeBe would have a better handle on this than I would.

I think we'll be a stronger defensive team. We had runs at the end of the year when we were just swarming teams and they couldn't handle it. I worry about our offense, though. What we really need is for Wilson to become more comfortable at the point so that Chucky is freed up to be a go-to scorer from the wing. We also need our front court to step up a bit. Hargis was a nice surprise last year who had some nice performances at the center position and was a presence in the middle for us at times. That helped. But we're really young this year with only 1 senior (Seabrook). At least 1 of the incoming freshman needs to step up and be a player.

I think it's a NIT team due to the defense. If we can find consistent scoring, it could be a bit better than that.

Well, now that I've seen the non-conf part of the schedule, I think the women should have a pretty good shot at making the WNIT again. That schedule is obviously geared to a young team that needs to learn to play together and to gain confidence together, especially on the road. They ended last season having a few good road wins but that was after a long dry spell. It was those road wins to end the conference games that gave them the record they needed to get into the WNIT and then they had the great road win in the WNIT in Laramie in front of a packed house of vocal cowgirl fans (and a small group of us vocal Buffs fans ).This schedule gives them the chance to get a few road wins and build the confidence that they can do it again.

This team lost a lot from last season. Spears obviously was the heart of the offense. You could count on her for points when you needed them and you could see that Chucky felt more comfortable passing to Spears than to any of the other players. I'm thinking that we will need at least 2 players to step up on offense...probably one of the returnees (no real idea who) and then points coming from one or more of the freshmen.... Roberson and Kresl being the most likely in my mind. I'd love to see more of Chucky at the 2 also, as Nik says. I'm also hoping that we see continued development in Hargis at the post. She was night and day different by the end of last season from the start of the season and another jump for this season would really help. That way, Reese, the big from Oregon, can develop gradually into whats needed in the college game.

I also think we lose a lot on defense. The quiet player that was always tasked with defending the other teams best guard was Blythe. And she usually delivered with a good performance. With her gone, someone else will have to step up here too. And I have no idea who that might be....maybe one of the Wilson twins, since they showed a bit on defense last season, particularly B Will.

I think they will be decent and have the chance to be pretty good, but a lot will depend on off-season development in the returning players and some contributions from the freshmen. The team certainly seemed to have bought into what Coach Lappe and her assistants were selling by the end of last season. And the freshmen are this staff's recruits, as clearly stated by Arielle Roberson when she committed ... "Because of the big improvement of the team since Coach Lappe and her staff have been there I believe in their system," Roberson said.

Is the WNIT an achievable goal .... I believe the answer is yes. Reaching the NCAA ..... well, we will have to wait and see. Clearly that would be a stretch for this young team. Also they will likely not get a big push from league strength, considering that the PAC only sent 3 teams out of 10 to the dance last season, unless everybody has gotten better.
